Surah Az Zukhruf (The Ornaments of Gold)

43.41

surah 43 - verse 41

Arberry Whether We take thee away, We shall take vengeance upon them,
Maududi We shall inflict retribution on them, whether We take you away from the world (before We do that),
Pickthall And if We take thee away, We surely shall take vengeance on them,
Sahih And whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon them.
Yusuf Ali Even if We take thee away, We shall be sure to exact retribution from them,

43.42

surah 43 - verse 42

Arberry or We show thee a part of that We promised them, surely We have power over them.
Maududi or make you see the end that We had promised them, for We have full power over them.
Pickthall Or (if) We show thee that wherewith We threaten them; for lo! We have complete command of them.
Sahih Or whether [or not] We show you that which We have promised them, indeed, We are Perfect in Ability.
Yusuf Ali Or We shall show thee that (accomplished) which We have promised them: for verily We shall prevail over them.

43.43

surah 43 - verse 43

Arberry So hold thou fast unto that which has been revealed unto thee; surely thou art upon a straight path.
Maududi So hold fast to what has been revealed to you. Surely you are on the Straight Way.
Pickthall So hold thou fast to that which is inspired in thee. Lo! thou art on a right path.
Sahih So adhere to that which is revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path.
Yusuf Ali So hold thou fast to the Revelation sent down to thee; verily thou art on a Straight Way.

43.44

surah 43 - verse 44

Arberry Surely it is a Reminder to thee and to thy people; and assuredly you will be questioned.
Maududi Verily it is a great source of eminence for you and your people, and soon you will be called to account concerning that.
Pickthall And lo! it is in truth a Reminder for thee and for thy folk; and ye will be questioned.
Sahih And indeed, it is a remembrance for you and your people, and you [all] are going to be questioned.
Yusuf Ali The (Qur'an) is indeed the message, for thee and for thy people; and soon shall ye (all) be brought to account.

43.45

surah 43 - verse 45

Arberry Ask those of Our Messengers We sent before thee: Have We appointed, apart from the All-merciful, gods to be served?
Maududi Ask all Our Messengers whom We sent before you whether We had appointed any deities beside the Merciful One to be worshipped.
Pickthall And ask those of Our messengers whom We sent before thee: Did We ever appoint gods to be worshipped beside the Beneficent?
Sahih And ask those We sent before you of Our messengers; have We made besides the Most Merciful deities to be worshipped?
Yusuf Ali And question thou our messengers whom We sent before thee; did We appoint any deities other than (Allah) Most Gracious, to be worshipped?

43.46

surah 43 - verse 46

Arberry We also sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said, 'Surely, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being.'
Maududi Indeed We sent Moses with Our Signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He told them: “I am a Messenger of the Lord of the Universe.”
Pickthall And verily We sent Moses with Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds.
Sahih And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds."
Yusuf Ali We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds."

43.47

surah 43 - verse 47

Arberry But when he brought them Our signs, lo, they laughed at them.
Maududi Yet when he brought forth Clear Signs from Us, then lo, they burst into laughter.
Pickthall But when he brought them Our tokens, behold! they laughed at them.
Sahih But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them.
Yusuf Ali But when he came to them with Our Signs, behold they ridiculed them.

43.48

surah 43 - verse 48

Arberry And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return.
Maududi Every Sign that We showed them was greater than its predecessor; and then We seized them with Our chastisement so that they may return (to the Right Way).
Pickthall And every token that We showed them was greater than its sister (token), and We grasped them with the torment, that haply they might turn again.
Sahih And We showed them not a sign except that it was greater than its sister, and We seized them with affliction that perhaps they might return [to faith].
Yusuf Ali We showed them Sign after Sign, each greater than its fellow, and We seized them with Punishment, in order that they might turn (to Us).

43.49

surah 43 - verse 49

Arberry And they said, 'Sorcerer, pray to thy Lord for us by the covenant He has made with thee, and surely we shall be right-guided.'
Maududi (Whenever they faced an affliction) they would say: “O magician, pray for us to your Lord according to your station with Him. We shall certainly be guided to the Right Way.”
Pickthall And they said: O wizard! Entreat thy Lord for us by the pact that He hath made with thee. Lo! we verily will walk aright.
Sahih And they said [to Moses], "O magician, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. Indeed, we will be guided."
Yusuf Ali And they said, "O thou sorcerer! Invoke thy Lord for us according to His covenant with thee; for we shall truly accept guidance."

43.50

surah 43 - verse 50

Arberry But when We removed from them the chastisement, behold, they broke their troth.
Maududi But lo, each time We removed Our affliction from them, they would go back on their word.
Pickthall But when We eased them of the torment, behold! they broke their word.
Sahih But when We removed from them the affliction, at once they broke their word.
Yusuf Ali But when We removed the Penalty from them, behold, they broke their word.

43.51

surah 43 - verse 51

Arberry And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: 'O my people, do I not possess the kingdom of Egypt, and these rivers flowing beneath me? What, do you not see?
Maududi And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: “My people, do I not have dominion over Egypt, and are these streams not flowing beneath me? Can't you see?
Pickthall And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern?
Sahih And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see?
Yusuf Ali And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion of Egypt belong to me, (witness) these streams flowing underneath my (palace)? What! see ye not then?

43.52

surah 43 - verse 52

Arberry Or am I better than this man, who is contemptible and scarcely makes things clear?
Maududi Am I better or this contemptible man who is scarcely able to express himself?
Pickthall I am surely better than this fellow, who is despicable and can hardly make (his meaning) plain!
Sahih Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear?
Yusuf Ali "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly?

43.53

surah 43 - verse 53

Arberry Why then have bracelets of gold not been cast on him, or angels not come with him conjoined?'
Maududi Why were bracelets of gold not bestowed upon him? Why did a retinue of angels not accompany him as attendants?”
Pickthall Why, then, have armlets of gold not been set upon him, or angels sent along with him?
Sahih Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?"
Yusuf Ali "Then why are not gold bracelets bestowed on him, or (why) come (not) with him angels accompanying him in procession?"

43.54

surah 43 - verse 54

Arberry So he made his people unsteady, and they obeyed him; surely they were an ungodly people.
Maududi He incited his people to levity and they obeyed him. Surely they were an iniquitous people.
Pickthall Thus he persuaded his people to make light (of Moses), and they obeyed him. Lo! they were a wanton folk.
Sahih So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah].
Yusuf Ali Thus did he make fools of his people, and they obeyed him: truly were they a people rebellious (against Allah).

43.55

surah 43 - verse 55

Arberry So, when they had angered Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all together;
Maududi So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all,
Pickthall So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one.
Sahih And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all.
Yusuf Ali When at length they provoked Us, We exacted retribution from them, and We drowned them all.

43.56

surah 43 - verse 56

Arberry and We made them a thing past, and We appointed them for an example to later folk.
Maududi and made them a thing of the past and an example for those who would come after them.
Pickthall And We made them a thing past, and an example for those after (them).
Sahih And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples.
Yusuf Ali And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages.

43.57

surah 43 - verse 57

Arberry And when the son of Mary is cited as an example, behold, thy people turn away from it
Maududi No sooner the example of the son of Mary was mentioned than, lo and behold, your people raised a clamour
Pickthall And when the son of Mary is quoted as an example, behold! the folk laugh out,
Sahih And when the son of Mary was presented as an example, immediately your people laughed aloud.
Yusuf Ali When (Jesus) the son of Mary is held up as an example, behold, thy people raise a clamour thereat (in ridicule)!

43.58

surah 43 - verse 58

Arberry and say, 'What, are our gods better, or he?' They cite not him to thee, save to dispute;. nay, but they are a people contentious.
Maududi and said: “Who is better, our deities or he?” They said so only out of contentiousness. They are a disputatious people.
Pickthall And say: Are our gods better, or is he? They raise not the objection save for argument. Nay! but they are a contentious folk.
Sahih And they said, "Are your gods better, or is he?" They did not present the comparison except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.
Yusuf Ali And they say, "Are our gods best, or he?" This they set forth to thee, only by way of disputation: yea, they are a contentious people.

43.59

surah 43 - verse 59

Arberry He is only a servant We blessed, and We made him to be an example to the Children of Israel.
Maududi He was no more than a servant (of Ours), one upon whom We bestowed Our favours and whom We made an example (of Our infinite power) for the Children of Israel.
Pickthall He is nothing but a slave on whom We bestowed favour, and We made him a pattern for the Children of Israel.
Sahih Jesus was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.
Yusuf Ali He was no more than a servant: We granted Our favour to him, and We made him an example to the Children of Israel.

43.60

surah 43 - verse 60

Arberry Had We willed, We would have appointed angels among you to be successors in the earth.
Maududi If We had so willed We could have made some of you into angels to become your successors on earth.
Pickthall And had We willed We could have set among you angels to be viceroys in the earth.
Sahih And if We willed, We could have made [instead] of you angels succeeding [one another] on the earth.
Yusuf Ali And if it were Our Will, We could make angels from amongst you, succeeding each other on the earth.
