surah 2 - verse 2

Arberry	That is the Book, wherein is no doubt, a guidance to the godfearing
Maududi	This is the Book of Allah: there is no doubt about it. It is guidance to Godfearing people,
Pickthall	This is the Scripture whereof there is no doubt, a guidance unto those who ward off (evil).
Sahih	This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah -
Yusuf Ali	This is the Book; in it is guidance sure, without doubt, to those who fear Allah;

surah 2 - verse 3

surah 2 - verse 4

Arberry	who believe in what has been sent down to thee and what has been sent down before thee, and have faith in the Hereafter;
Maududi	who believe in the Book We have sent down to you (i.e. the Qur'an) and in the Books sent down before you, and firmly believe in the Hereafter.
Pickthall	And who believe in that which is revealed unto thee (Muhammad) and that which was revealed before thee, and are certain of the Hereafter.
Sahih	And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].
Yusuf Ali	And who believe in the Revelation sent to thee, and sent before thy time, and (in their hearts) have the assurance of the Hereafter.

2.5

surah 2 - verse 5

Arberry	those are upon guidance from their Lord, those are the ones who prosper.
Maududi	Such people are on the right way from their Lord and such are truly successful.
Pickthall	These depend on guidance from their Lord. These are the successful.
Sahih	Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.
Yusuf Ali	They are on (true) guidance, from their Lord, and it is these who will prosper.

2.6

surah 2 - verse 6

Arberry	As for the unbelievers, alike it is to them whether thou hast warned them or hast not warned them, they do not believe.
Maududi	As for those who have rejected (these things), it is all the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them: they are not going to believe.
Pickthall	As for the Disbelievers, Whether thou warn them or thou warn them not it is all one for them; they believe not.
Sahih	Indeed, those who disbelieve - it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe.
Yusuf Ali	As to those who reject Faith, it is the same to them whether thou warn them or do not warn them; they will not believe.

surah 2 - verse 7

Arberry	God has set a seal on their hearts and on their hearing, and on their eyes is a covering, and there awaits them a mighty chastisement.
Maududi	Allah has sealed up their hearts and ears and a covering has fallen over their eyes, and they have incurred the severest punishment.
Pickthall	Allah hath sealed their hearing and their hearts, and on their eyes there is a covering. Theirs will be an awful doom.
Sahih	Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment.
Yusuf Ali	Allah hath set a seal on their hearts and on their hearing, and on their eyes is a veil; great is the penalty they (incur).

2.8

surah 2 - verse 8

Arberry	And some men there are who say, 'We believe in God and the Last Day'; but they are not believers.
Maududi	Then there are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day", whereas they do not believe at all.
Pickthall	And of mankind are some who say: We believe in Allah and the Last Day, when they believe not.
Sahih	And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day," but they are not believers.
Yusuf Ali	Of the people there are some who say: "We believe in Allah and the Last Day;" but they do not (really) believe.

2.9

surah 2 - verse 9

Arberry	They would trick God and the believers, and only themselves they deceive, and they are not aware.
Maududi	They thus try to deceive Allah and the Believers, but they succeed in deceiving none except themselves and they realize it not.
Pickthall	They think to beguile Allah and those who believe, and they beguile none save themselves; but they perceive not.
Sahih	They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not.
Yusuf Ali	Fain would they deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves, and realise (it) not!

2.10

surah 2 - verse 10

Arberry	In their hearts is a sickness, and God has increased their sickness, and there awaits them a painful chastisement for that they have cried lies.
Maududi	In their hearts is a disease which Allah has increased all the more and a painful doom is in store for them for the lie they utter.
Pickthall	In their hearts is a disease, and Allah increaseth their disease. A painful doom is theirs because they lie.
Sahih	In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.
Yusuf Ali	In their hearts is a disease; and Allah has increased their disease: And grievous is the penalty they (incur), because they are false (to themselves).

2.11

surah 2 - verse 11

Arberry	When it is said to them, 'Do not corruption in the land', they say, 'We are only ones that put things right.'
Maududi	Whenever it is said to them, "Spread not disorder on the earth", their reply is, "We only seek to put things aright".
Pickthall	And when it is said unto them: Make not mischief in the earth, they say: We are peacemakers only.
Sahih	And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers."
Yusuf Ali	When it is said to them: "Make not mischief on the earth," they say: "Why, we only Want to make peace!"

2.12

surah 2 - verse 12

Arberry	Truly, they are the workers of corruption but they are not aware.
Maududi	Beware! they do spread disorder but they realize it not.
Pickthall	Are not they indeed the mischief-makers? But they perceive not.
Sahih	Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not.
Yusuf Ali	Of a surety, they are the ones who make mischief, but they realise (it) not.

2.13

surah 2 - verse 13

Arberry	When it is said to them, 'Believe as the people believe', they say, 'Shall we believe, as fools believe?' Truly, they are the foolish ones, but they do not know.
Maududi	And when it is said to them, "Believe sincerely as the other people have believed", they reply, "Should we believe as fools have believed?" Beware! they themselves are the fools, but they know it not.
Pickthall	And when it is said unto them: believe as the people believe, they say: shall we believe as the foolish believe? are not they indeed the foolish? But they know not.
Sahih	And when it is said to them, "Believe as the people have believed," they say, "Should we believe as the foolish have believed?" Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not.
Yusuf Ali	When it is said to them: "Believe as the others believe:" They say: "Shall we believe as the fools believe?" Nay, of a surety they are the fools, but they do not know.

2.14

surah 2 - verse 14

Arberry	When they meet those who believe, they say, 'We believe'; but when they go privily to their Satans, they say, 'We are with you; we were only mocking.'
Maududi	When they meet those who believe, they say, "We, too, are believers", but when they privily meet their evil geniuses, they say, "Indeed we are with you: we are only mocking at these people".
Pickthall	And when they fall in with those who believe, they say: We believe; but when they go apart to their devils they declare: Lo! we are with you; verily we did but mock.
Sahih	And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers."
Yusuf Ali	When they meet those who believe, they say: "We believe;" but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say: "We are really with you: We (were) only jesting."

2.15

surah 2 - verse 15

Arberry	God shall mock them, and shall lead them on blindly wandering in their insolence.
Maududi	(Little do they realize that) Allah is mocking at them. He gives them rope enough, and they wander on and on blindly in their mischief and rebellion.
Pickthall	Allah (Himself) doth mock them, leaving them to wander blindly on in their contumacy.
Sahih	[But] Allah mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression [while] they wander blindly.
Yusuf Ali	Allah will throw back their mockery on them, and give them rope in their trespasses; so they will wander like blind ones (To and fro).

2.16

surah 2 - verse 16

Arberry	Those are they that have bought error at the price of guidance, and their commerce has not profited them, and they are not right-guided.
Maududi	These are the people who have bartered away Guidance for error, but this is a profitless bargain that they have made, and they are not at all on the right way.
Pickthall	These are they who purchase error at the price of guidance, so their commerce doth not prosper, neither are they guided.
Sahih	Those are the ones who have purchased error [in exchange] for guidance, so their transaction has brought no profit, nor were they guided.
Yusuf Ali	These are they who have bartered Guidance for error: But their traffic is profitless, and they have lost true direction,

2.17

surah 2 - verse 17

Arberry	The likeness of them is as the likeness of a man who kindled a fire, and when it lit all about him God took away their light, and left them in darkness unseeing
Maududi	Their condition may be described in a parable: a man kindled a fire and when it illuminated all around him, Allah took away the light from their eyes and left them in utter darkness, where they could not see anything.
Pickthall	Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindleth fire, and when it sheddeth its light around him Allah taketh away their light and leaveth them in darkness, where they cannot see,
Sahih	Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not see.
Yusuf Ali	Their similitude is that of a man who kindled a fire; when it lighted all around him, Allah took away their light and left them in utter darkness. So they could not see.

2.18

surah 2 - verse 18

Arberry	deaf, dumb, blind -- so they shall not return;
Maududi	They are deaf; they are dumb; they are blind so they will not return (to the right way).
Pickthall	Deaf, dumb and blind; and they return not.
Sahih	Deaf, dumb and blind - so they will not return [to the right path].
Yusuf Ali	Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not return (to the path).

2.19

surah 2 - verse 19

Arberry	or as a cloudburst out of heaven in which is darkness, and thunder, and lightning -- they put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps, fearful of death; and God encompasses the unbelievers;
Maududi	Or (still another parable may be cited to depict their condition): heavy rain is falling from the sky, accompanied by pitch darkness, thunder and lightning. When they hear the thunderclap, they thrust their fingers into their ears for fear of death, but Allah is encircling the disbelievers on all sides.
Pickthall	Or like a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder and the flash of lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears by reason of the thunder-claps, for fear of death, Allah encompasseth the disbelievers (in His guidance, His omniscience and His omnipotence).
Sahih	Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allah is encompassing of the disbelievers.
Yusuf Ali	Or (another similitude) is that of a rain-laden cloud from the sky: In it are zones of darkness, and thunder and lightning: They press their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunder-clap, the while they are in terror of death. But Allah is ever round the rejecters of Faith!

2.20

surah 2 - verse 20

Arberry	the lightning wellnigh snatches away their sight; whensoever it gives them light, they walk in it, and when the darkness is over them, they halt; had God willed, He would have taken away their hearing and their sight. Truly, God is powerful over everything.
Maududi	The lightning terrifies them as if it were going to snatch away their eyesight from them. When they see light, they move on a little further and When it becomes dark for them, they stand still. Had Allah so willed, He could have deprived them totally of their hearing and their sight. Most surely Allah has power over everything.
Pickthall	The lightning almost snatcheth away their sight from them. As often as it flasheth forth for them they walk therein, and when it darkeneth against them they stand still. If Allah willed, He could destroy their hearing and their sight. Lo! Allah is able to do all things.
Sahih	The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
Yusuf Ali	The lightning all but snatches away their sight; every time the light (Helps) them, they walk therein, and when the darkness grows on them, they stand still. And if Allah willed, He could take away their faculty of hearing and seeing; for Allah hath power over all things.
