Surah As Saaffat (Those who set the ranks)

37.41

surah 37 - verse 41

Arberry for them awaits a known provision,
Maududi For them awaits a known provision,
Pickthall For them there is a known provision,
Sahih Those will have a provision determined -
Yusuf Ali For them is a Sustenance determined,

37.42

surah 37 - verse 42

Arberry fruits -- and they high-honoured
Maududi a variety of delicious fruits; and they shall be honoured
Pickthall Fruits. And they will be honoured
Sahih Fruits; and they will be honored
Yusuf Ali Fruits (Delights); and they (shall enjoy) honour and dignity,

Arberry upon couches, set face to face,
Maududi They will be seated upon couches set face to face;
Pickthall On couches facing one another;
Sahih On thrones facing one another.
Yusuf Ali Facing each other on Thrones (of Dignity):

37.45

surah 37 - verse 45

Arberry a cup from a spring being passed round to them,
Maududi a cup filled with wine from its springs, will be passed around to them;
Pickthall A cup from a gushing spring is brought round for them,
Sahih There will be circulated among them a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring,
Yusuf Ali Round will be passed to them a Cup from a clear-flowing fountain,

37.46

surah 37 - verse 46

Arberry white, a delight to the drinkers,
Maududi white, sparkling (wine), a delight to the drinkers.
Pickthall White, delicious to the drinkers,
Sahih White and delicious to the drinkers;
Yusuf Ali Crystal-white, of a taste delicious to those who drink (thereof),

37.47

surah 37 - verse 47

Arberry wherein no sickness is, neither intoxication;
Maududi There will neither be any harm in it for their body nor will it intoxicate their mind.
Pickthall Wherein there is no headache nor are they made mad thereby.
Sahih No bad effect is there in it, nor from it will they be intoxicated.
Yusuf Ali Free from headiness; nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.

37.48

surah 37 - verse 48

Arberry and with them wide-eyed maidens restraining their glances
Maududi Theirs shall be wide-eyed maidens with bashful, restrained glances,
Pickthall And with them are those of modest gaze, with lovely eyes,
Sahih And with them will be women limiting [their] glances, with large, [beautiful] eyes,
Yusuf Ali And besides them will be chaste women, restraining their glances, with big eyes (of wonder and beauty).

37.49

surah 37 - verse 49

Arberry as if they were hidden pearls.
Maududi so delicate as the hidden peel under an egg's shell.
Pickthall (Pure) as they were hidden eggs (of the ostrich).
Sahih As if they were [delicate] eggs, well-protected.
Yusuf Ali As if they were (delicate) eggs closely guarded.

37.50

surah 37 - verse 50

Arberry They advance one upon another, asking each other questions.
Maududi Then some of them will turn to others, and will ask each other.
Pickthall And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.
Sahih And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other.
Yusuf Ali Then they will turn to one another and question one another.

37.51

surah 37 - verse 51

Arberry One of them says, 'I had a comrade
Maududi One of them will say: “I had a companion in the world
Pickthall A speaker of them saith: Lo! I had a comrade
Sahih A speaker among them will say, "Indeed, I had a companion [on earth]
Yusuf Ali One of them will start the talk and say: "I had an intimate companion (on the earth),

37.52

surah 37 - verse 52

Arberry who would say, "Are you a confirmer?
Maududi who used to say: -- Are you also one of those who confirm the Truth (of life after death)?
Pickthall Who used to say: Art thou in truth of those who put faith (in his words)?
Sahih Who would say, 'Are you indeed of those who believe
Yusuf Ali "Who used to say, 'what! art thou amongst those who bear witness to the Truth (of the Message)?

37.53

surah 37 - verse 53

Arberry What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be requited?"
Maududi After we are dead and have become all dust and bones shall we still be requited?'
Pickthall Can we, when we are dead and have become mere dust and bones - can we (then) verily be brought to book?
Sahih That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?'"
Yusuf Ali "'When we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed receive rewards and punishments?'"

37.54

surah 37 - verse 54

Arberry He says, 'Are you looking down?'
Maududi He will say: -- Do you wish to know where he is now?'
Pickthall He saith: Will ye look?
Sahih He will say, "Would you [care to] look?"
Yusuf Ali (A voice) said: "Would ye like to look down?"

37.55

surah 37 - verse 55

Arberry Then he looks, and sees him in the midst of Hell.
Maududi Then he will look downwards, and will see him in the depths of Hell.
Pickthall Then looketh he and seeth him in the depth of hell.
Sahih And he will look and see him in the midst of the Hellfire.
Yusuf Ali He looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.

37.56

surah 37 - verse 56

Arberry He says, 'By God, wellnigh thou didst destroy me;
Maududi He will say to him: -- By Allah, you almost ruined me.
Pickthall He saith: By Allah, thou verily didst all but cause my ruin,
Sahih He will say, "By Allah, you almost ruined me.
Yusuf Ali He said: "By Allah! thou wast little short of bringing me to perdition!

37.57

surah 37 - verse 57

Arberry But for my Lord's blessing, I were one of the arraigned.
Maududi But for Allah's favour, I should be one of those who have been mustered here.
Pickthall And had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I too had been of those haled forth (to doom).
Sahih If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell].
Yusuf Ali "Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I should certainly have been among those brought (there)!

37.58

surah 37 - verse 58

Arberry What, do we then not die
Maududi So, are we not going to die,
Pickthall Are we then not to die
Sahih Then, are we not to die
Yusuf Ali "Is it (the case) that we shall not die,

37.59

surah 37 - verse 59

Arberry except for our first death, and are we not chastised?
Maududi except for our first death? And shall we suffer no chastisement?'”
Pickthall Saving our former death, and are we not to be punished?
Sahih Except for our first death, and we will not be punished?"
Yusuf Ali "Except our first death, and that we shall not be punished?"

37.60

surah 37 - verse 60

Arberry This is indeed the mighty triumph,
Maududi Surely this is the supreme triumph.
Pickthall Lo! this is the supreme triumph.
Sahih Indeed, this is the great attainment.
Yusuf Ali Verily this is the supreme achievement!
