Surah As Saaffat (Those who set the ranks)

37.81

surah 37 - verse 81

Arberry he was among Our believing servants.
Maududi Surely he was one of Our truly believing servants.
Pickthall Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves.
Sahih Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.
Yusuf Ali For he was one of our believing Servants.

37.82

surah 37 - verse 82

Arberry Then afterwards We drowned the rest.
Maududi Thereafter We caused the others to be drowned.
Pickthall Then We did drown the others.
Sahih Then We drowned the disbelievers.
Yusuf Ali Then the rest we overwhelmed in the Flood.

37.83

surah 37 - verse 83

Arberry Of his party was also Abraham;
Maududi Abraham was on the self-same way (as Noah).
Pickthall And lo! of his persuasion verily was Abraham
Sahih And indeed, among his kind was Abraham,
Yusuf Ali Verily among those who followed his Way was Abraham.

37.84

surah 37 - verse 84

Arberry when he came unto his Lord with a pure heart,
Maududi When he came to his Lord with a pure heart,
Pickthall When he came unto his Lord with a whole heart;
Sahih When he came to his Lord with a sound heart
Yusuf Ali Behold! he approached his Lord with a sound heart.

37.85

surah 37 - verse 85

Arberry when he said to his father and his folk, 'What do you serve?
Maududi and said to his father and his people: “Whom do you worship?
Pickthall When he said unto his father and his folk: What is it that ye worship?
Sahih [And] when he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?
Yusuf Ali Behold! he said to his father and to his people, "What is that which ye worship?

37.86

Arberry Is it a calumny, gods apart from God, that you desire?
Maududi Is it false deities that you want to serve rather than Allah?
Pickthall Is it a falsehood - gods beside Allah - that ye desire?
Sahih Is it falsehood [as] gods other than Allah you desire?
Yusuf Ali "Is it a falsehood- gods other than Allah- that ye desire?

37.87

surah 37 - verse 87

Arberry What think you then of the Lord of all Being?'
Maududi What do you think of the Lord of the whole Universe?”
Pickthall What then is your opinion of the Lord of the Worlds?
Sahih Then what is your thought about the Lord of the worlds?"
Yusuf Ali "Then what is your idea about the Lord of the worlds?"

37.88

Arberry And he cast a glance at the stars,
Maududi Then he looked carefully at the stars
Pickthall And he glanced a glance at the stars
Sahih And he cast a look at the stars
Yusuf Ali Then did he cast a glance at the Stars.

37.89

surah 37 - verse 89

Arberry and he said, 'Surely I am sick.'
Maududi and said: “I am sick.”
Pickthall Then said: Lo! I feel sick!
Sahih And said, "Indeed, I am [about to be] ill."
Yusuf Ali And he said, "I am indeed sick (at heart)!"

37.90

surah 37 - verse 90

Arberry But they went away from him, turning their backs.
Maududi So turning their backs, they went away from him.
Pickthall And they turned their backs and went away from him.
Sahih So they turned away from him, departing.
Yusuf Ali So they turned away from him, and departed.

37.91

surah 37 - verse 91

Arberry Then he turned to their gods, and said, 'What do you eat?
Maududi Then he went quietly to the (temple of the deities) and said: “What is the matter with you, why do you not eat?
Pickthall Then turned he to their gods and said: Will ye not eat?
Sahih Then he turned to their gods and said, "Do you not eat?
Yusuf Ali Then did he turn to their gods and said, "will ye not eat (of the offerings before you)?...

37.92

surah 37 - verse 92

Arberry What ails you, that you speak not?'
Maududi What is the matter with you, why do you not speak?”
Pickthall What aileth you that ye speak not?
Sahih What is [wrong] with you that you do not speak?"
Yusuf Ali "What is the matter with you that ye speak not (intelligently)?"

37.93

surah 37 - verse 93

Arberry And he turned upon them smiting them with his right hand.
Maududi Then he turned upon them, striking them with his right hand,
Pickthall Then he attacked them, striking with his right hand.
Sahih And he turned upon them a blow with [his] right hand.
Yusuf Ali Then did he turn upon them, striking (them) with the right hand.

37.94

surah 37 - verse 94

Arberry Then came the others to him hastening.
Maududi whereupon people came to him running.
Pickthall And (his people) came toward him, hastening.
Sahih Then the people came toward him, hastening.
Yusuf Ali Then came (the worshippers) with hurried steps, and faced (him).

37.95

surah 37 - verse 95

Arberry He said, 'Do you serve what you hew,
Maududi Abraham said to them: “Do you worship what you yourselves have carved with your own hands
Pickthall He said: Worship ye that which ye yourselves do carve
Sahih He said, "Do you worship that which you [yourselves] carve,
Yusuf Ali He said: "Worship ye that which ye have (yourselves) carved?

37.96

surah 37 - verse 96

Arberry and God created you and what you make?'
Maududi while it is Allah Who has created you and all that you make?”
Pickthall When Allah hath created you and what ye make?
Sahih While Allah created you and that which you do?"
Yusuf Ali "But Allah has created you and your handwork!"

37.97

surah 37 - verse 97

Arberry They said, 'Build him a building, and cast him into the furnace!'
Maududi They spoke among themselves: “Build him a pyre and then throw him into the furnace.”
Pickthall They said: Build for him a building and fling him in the red-hotfire.
Sahih They said, "Construct for him a furnace and throw him into the burning fire."
Yusuf Ali They said, "Build him a furnace, and throw him into the blazing fire!"

37.98

surah 37 - verse 98

Arberry They desired to outwit him; so We made them the lower ones.
Maududi They had contrived an evil plan against him, but We abased them all.
Pickthall And they designed a snare for him, but We made them the undermost.
Sahih And they intended for him a plan, but We made them the most debased.
Yusuf Ali (This failing), they then sought a stratagem against him, but We made them the ones most humiliated!

37.99

surah 37 - verse 99

Arberry He said, 'I am going to my Lord; He will guide me.
Maududi Abraham said: “I am going to my Lord; He will guide me.
Pickthall And he said: Lo! I am going unto my Lord Who will guide me.
Sahih And [then] he said, "Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me.
Yusuf Ali He said: "I will go to my Lord! He will surely guide me!

37.100

surah 37 - verse 100

translator's name verse
Arberry My Lord, give me one of the righteous.'
Maududi Lord, grant me a righteous son.”
Pickthall My Lord! Vouchsafe me of the righteous.
Sahih My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous."
Yusuf Ali "O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!"
