Surah As Saaffat (Those who set the ranks)

37.101

surah 37 - verse 101

Arberry Then We gave him the good tidings of a prudent boy;
Maududi (In response to this prayer) We gave him the good news of a prudent boy;
Pickthall So We gave him tidings of a gentle son.
Sahih So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.
Yusuf Ali So We gave him the good news of a boy ready to suffer and forbear.

37.102

surah 37 - verse 102

Arberry and when he had reached the age of running with him, he said, 'My son, I see in a dream that I shall sacrifice thee; consider, what thinkest thou?' He said, 'My father, do as thou art bidden; thou shalt find me, God willing, one of the steadfast.'
Maududi and when he was old enough to go about and work with him, (one day) Abraham said to him: “My son, I see in my dream that I am slaughtering you. So consider (and tell me) what you think.” He said: “Do as you are bidden. You will find me, if Allah so wills, among the steadfast.”
Pickthall And when (his son) was old enough to walk with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice thee. So look, what thinkest thou? He said: O my father! Do that which thou art commanded. Allah willing, thou shalt find me of the steadfast.
Sahih And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast."
Yusuf Ali Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: "O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: Now see what is thy view!" (The son) said: "O my father! Do as thou art commanded: thou will find me, if Allah so wills one practising Patience and Constancy!"

37.103

surah 37 - verse 103

Arberry When they had surrendered, and he flung him upon his brow,
Maududi When both surrendered (to Allah's command) and Abraham flung the son down on his forehead,
Pickthall Then, when they had both surrendered (to Allah), and he had flung him down upon his face,
Sahih And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead,
Yusuf Ali So when they had both submitted their wills (to Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice),

37.104

Arberry We called unto him, 'Abraham,
Maududi We cried out: “O Abraham,
Pickthall We called unto him: O Abraham!
Sahih We called to him, "O Abraham,
Yusuf Ali We called out to him "O Abraham!

37.105

surah 37 - verse 105

Arberry thou hast confirmed the vision; even so We recompense the good-doers.
Maududi you have indeed fulfilled your dream. Thus do We reward the good-doers.”
Pickthall Thou hast already fulfilled the vision. Lo! thus do We reward the good.
Sahih You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
Yusuf Ali "Thou hast already fulfilled the vision!" - thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

37.106

surah 37 - verse 106

Arberry This is indeed the manifest trial.'
Maududi This was indeed a plain trial.
Pickthall Lo! that verily was a clear test.
Sahih Indeed, this was the clear trial.
Yusuf Ali For this was obviously a trial-

37.107

Arberry And We ransomed him with a mighty sacrifice,
Maududi And We ransomed him with a mighty sacrifice,
Pickthall Then We ransomed him with a tremendous victim.
Sahih And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,
Yusuf Ali And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice:

Arberry and left for him among the later folk
Maududi and We preserved for him a good name among posterity.
Pickthall And We left for him among the later folk (the salutation):
Sahih And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:
Yusuf Ali And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:

37.109

Arberry 'Peace be upon Abraham!'
Maududi Peace be upon Abraham.
Pickthall Peace be unto Abraham!
Sahih "Peace upon Abraham."
Yusuf Ali "Peace and salutation to Abraham!"

37.110

surah 37 - verse 110

Arberry Even so We recompense the good-doers;
Maududi Thus do We reward the good-doers.
Pickthall Thus do We reward the good.
Sahih Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
Yusuf Ali Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

37.111

Arberry he was among Our believing servants.
Maududi Surely he was one of Our believing servants.
Pickthall Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves.
Sahih Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.
Yusuf Ali For he was one of our believing Servants.

37.112

Arberry Then We gave him the good tidings of Isaac, a Prophet, one of the righteous.
Maududi And We gave him the good news of Isaac, a Prophet and among the righteous ones.
Pickthall And we gave him tidings of the birth of Isaac, a prophet of the righteous.
Sahih And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.
Yusuf Ali And We gave him the good news of Isaac - a prophet,- one of the Righteous.

37.113

surah 37 - verse 113

Arberry And We blessed him, and Isaac; and of their seed some are good-doers, and some manifest self-wrongers.
Maududi And We blessed him and Isaac. Among the offspring of the two some did good and some plainly wronged themselves.
Pickthall And We blessed him and Isaac. And of their seed are some who do good, and some who plainly wrong themselves.
Sahih And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself.
Yusuf Ali We blessed him and Isaac: but of their progeny are (some) that do right, and (some) that obviously do wrong, to their own souls.

37.114

surah 37 - verse 114

Arberry We also favoured Moses and Aaron,
Maududi Verily We bestowed Our favours on Moses and Aaron
Pickthall And We verily gave grace unto Moses and Aaron,
Sahih And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron.
Yusuf Ali Again (of old) We bestowed Our favour on Moses and Aaron,

37.115

surah 37 - verse 115

Arberry and We delivered them and their people from the great distress.
Maududi and We delivered both of them and their people from the great calamity.
Pickthall And saved them and their people from the great distress,
Sahih And We saved them and their people from the great affliction,
Yusuf Ali And We delivered them and their people from (their) Great Calamity;

37.116

surah 37 - verse 116

Arberry And We helped them, so that they were the victors;
Maududi We succoured them, and they gained the upper hand (against their enemies).
Pickthall And helped them so that they became the victors.
Sahih And We supported them so it was they who overcame.
Yusuf Ali And We helped them, so they overcame (their troubles);

37.117

surah 37 - verse 117

Arberry and We gave them the Manifesting Book,
Maududi We granted them a Clear Book,
Pickthall And We gave them the clear Scripture
Sahih And We gave them the explicit Scripture,
Yusuf Ali And We gave them the Book which helps to make things clear;

Arberry and guided them in the straight path,
Maududi and showed them the Straight Way,
Pickthall And showed them the right path.
Sahih And We guided them on the straight path.
Yusuf Ali And We guided them to the Straight Way.
