Surah As Saaffat (Those who set the ranks)

37.1

surah 37 - verse 1

Arberry By the rangers ranging
Maududi By those who range themselves in rows;
Pickthall By those who set the ranks in battle order
Sahih By those [angels] lined up in rows
Yusuf Ali By those who range themselves in ranks,

37.2

surah 37 - verse 2

Arberry and the scarers scaring
Maududi by those who reprove severely,
Pickthall And those who drive away (the wicked) with reproof
Sahih And those who drive [the clouds]
Yusuf Ali And so are strong in repelling (evil),

37.3

surah 37 - verse 3

Arberry and the reciters of a Remembrance,
Maududi and those who recite the Exhortation;
Pickthall And those who read (the Word) for a reminder,
Sahih And those who recite the message,
Yusuf Ali And thus proclaim the Message (of Allah)!

37.4

surah 37 - verse 4

Arberry surely your God is One,
Maududi surely your God is One,
Pickthall Lo! thy Lord is surely One;
Sahih Indeed, your God is One,
Yusuf Ali Verily, verily, your Allah is one!-

37.5

surah 37 - verse 5

Arberry Lord of the heavens and the earth, and of what between them is Lord of the Easts.
Maududi the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of whatever lies between the two, the Lord of the Easts.
Pickthall Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all that is between them, and Lord of the sun's risings.
Sahih Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises.
Yusuf Ali Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all between them, and Lord of every point at the rising of the sun!

37.6

surah 37 - verse 6

Arberry We have adorned the lower heaven with the adornment of the stars
Maududi We have adorned the lower heaven with the adornment of the stars
Pickthall Lo! We have adorned the lowest heaven with an ornament, the planets;
Sahih Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars
Yusuf Ali We have indeed decked the lower heaven with beauty (in) the stars,-

37.7

surah 37 - verse 7

Arberry and to preserve against every rebel Satan;
Maududi and have protected it from every rebellious satan.
Pickthall With security from every froward devil.
Sahih And as protection against every rebellious devil
Yusuf Ali (For beauty) and for guard against all obstinate rebellious evil spirits,

37.8

surah 37 - verse 8

Arberry they listen not to the High Council, for they are pelted from every side,
Maududi These satans cannot listen to what transpires in the High Council for they are pelted away from every side
Pickthall They cannot listen to the Highest Chiefs for they are pelted from every side,
Sahih [So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side,
Yusuf Ali (So) they should not strain their ears in the direction of the Exalted Assembly but be cast away from every side,

37.9

surah 37 - verse 9

Arberry rejected, and theirs is an everlasting chastisement,
Maududi and are repelled. Theirs is an unceasing chastisement.
Pickthall Outcast, and theirs is a perpetual torment;
Sahih Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,
Yusuf Ali Repulsed, for they are under a perpetual penalty,

37.10

surah 37 - verse 10

Arberry except such as snatches a fragment, and he is pursued by a piercing flame.
Maududi And if any is able to snatch a fragment, he is pursued by a piercing flame.
Pickthall Save him who snatcheth a fragment, and there pursueth him a piercing flame.
Sahih Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness].
Yusuf Ali Except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming fire, of piercing brightness.

37.11

surah 37 - verse 11

Arberry So ask them for a pronouncement -- Are they stronger in constitution, or those We created? We created them of clinging clay.
Maududi So ask them (that is, human beings): “Were they harder to create than the objects We created?” We created them from sticky clay.
Pickthall Then ask them (O Muhammad): Are they stronger as a creation, or those (others) whom we have created? Lo! We created them of plastic clay.
Sahih Then inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created men from sticky clay.
Yusuf Ali Just ask their opinion: are they the more difficult to create, or the (other) beings We have created? Them have We created out of a sticky clay!

37.12

surah 37 - verse 12

Arberry Nay, thou marvellest; and they scoff
Maududi You marvel (at the wondrous creations of Allah) and they scoff at it,
Pickthall Nay, but thou dost marvel when they mock
Sahih But you wonder, while they mock,
Yusuf Ali Truly dost thou marvel, while they ridicule,

37.13

surah 37 - verse 13

Arberry and, when reminded, do not remember
Maududi and when they are admonished, they pay no heed;
Pickthall And heed not when they are reminded,
Sahih And when they are reminded, they remember not.
Yusuf Ali And, when they are admonished, pay no heed,-

37.14

surah 37 - verse 14

Arberry and, when they see a sign, would scoff;
Maududi and if they see any Sign, they laugh it away
Pickthall And seek to scoff when they behold a portent.
Sahih And when they see a sign, they ridicule
Yusuf Ali And, when they see a Sign, turn it to mockery,

37.15

surah 37 - verse 15

Arberry and they say, 'This is nothing but manifest sorcery.
Maududi and say: “This is nothing but plain sorcery.
Pickthall And they say: Lo! this is mere magic;
Sahih And say, "This is not but obvious magic.
Yusuf Ali And say, "This is nothing but evident sorcery!

37.16

surah 37 - verse 16

Arberry What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up?
Maududi Is it ever possible that after we die and are reduced to dust and (a skeleton of) bones, we will be raised to life?
Pickthall When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised (again)?
Sahih When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
Yusuf Ali "What! when we die, and become dust and bones, shall we (then) be raised up (again)

37.17

surah 37 - verse 17

Arberry What, and our fathers, the ancients?'
Maududi And so also shall our forefathers of yore be raised to life?”
Pickthall And our forefathers?
Sahih And our forefathers [as well]?"
Yusuf Ali "And also our fathers of old?"

37.18

surah 37 - verse 18

translator's name verse
Arberry Say: 'Yes, and in all lowliness.'
Maududi Tell them: “Yes; and you are utterly helpless (against Allah).”
Pickthall Say (O Muhammad): Ye, in truth; and ye will be brought low.
Sahih Say, "Yes, and you will be [rendered] contemptible."
Yusuf Ali Say thou: "Yea, and ye shall then be humiliated (on account of your evil)."

37.19

surah 37 - verse 19

Arberry For it is only a single scaring, then behold, they are watching
Maududi There will be a single stern rebuff and lo, they will be observing with their own eyes (all that they had been warned against).
Pickthall There is but one Shout, and lo! they behold,
Sahih It will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing.
Yusuf Ali Then it will be a single (compelling) cry; and behold, they will begin to see!

37.20

surah 37 - verse 20

Arberry and they say, 'Woe, alas for us! This is the Day of Doom.'
Maududi They will then say: “Woe for us. This is the Day of Judgement.”
Pickthall And say: Ah, woe for us! This is the Day of Judgment.
Sahih They will say, "O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense."
Yusuf Ali They will say, "Ah! Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment!"
