Surah Al Furqan (The Criterion)

25.41

surah 25 - verse 41

Arberry And when they see thee, they take thee in mockery only: 'What, is this he whom God sent forth as a Messenger?
Maududi When these people see you, they scoff at you, (saying), "Is this the man whom Allah has sent as His Messenger?
Pickthall And when they see thee (O Muhammad) they treat thee only as a jest (saying): Is this he whom Allah sendeth as a messenger?
Sahih And when they see you, [O Muhammad], they take you not except in ridicule, [saying], "Is this the one whom Allah has sent as a messenger?
Yusuf Ali When they see thee, they treat thee no otherwise than in mockery: "Is this the one whom Allah has sent as a messenger?"

25.42

surah 25 - verse 42

Arberry Wellnigh he had led us astray from our gods, but that we kept steadfast to them.' Assuredly they shall know, when they see the chastisement, who is further astray from the way.
Maududi He had almost led us astray from our gods, had we not remained firm in our faith with regard to them. " The time is not far when they will see the torment and realize who had strayed far from the truth.
Pickthall He would have led us far away from our gods if we had not been staunch to them. They will know, when they behold the doom, who is more astray as to the road.
Sahih He almost would have misled us from our gods had we not been steadfast in [worship of] them." But they are going to know, when they see the punishment, who is farthest astray in [his] way.
Yusuf Ali "He indeed would well-nigh have misled us from our gods, had it not been that we were constant to them!" - Soon will they know, when they see the Penalty, who it is that is most misled in Path!

25.43

surah 25 - verse 43

Arberry Hast thou seen him who has taken his caprice to be his god? Wilt thou be a guardian over them?
Maududi Have you ever considered the case of the person who has made his lust his god? Can you take the responsibility of guiding such a one aright?
Pickthall Hast thou seen him who chooseth for his god his own lust? Wouldst thou then be guardian over him?
Sahih Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? Then would you be responsible for him?
Yusuf Ali Seest thou such a one as taketh for his god his own passion (or impulse)? Couldst thou be a disposer of affairs for him?

25.44

surah 25 - verse 44

Arberry Or deemest thou that most of them hear or understand? They are but as the cattle; nay, they are further astray from the way.
Maududi Do you think that most of them hear or understand? They are only like the cattle; nay, even worse than the cattle.
Pickthall Or deemest thou that most of them hear or understand? They are but as the cattle - nay, but they are farther astray?
Sahih Or do you think that most of them hear or reason? They are not except like livestock. Rather, they are [even] more astray in [their] way.
Yusuf Ali Or thinkest thou that most of them listen or understand? They are only like cattle;- nay, they are worse astray in Path.

25.45

surah 25 - verse 45

Arberry Hast thou not regarded thy Lord, how He has stretched out the shadow? Had He willed, He would have made it still. Then We appointed the sun, to be a guide to it;
Maududi Have you not seen how your Lord lengthens out the shadow? Had He willed, He would have made it constant, but We have made the sun its pilot;
Pickthall Hast thou not seen how thy Lord hath spread the shade - And if He willed He could have made it still - then We have made the sun its pilot;
Sahih Have you not considered your Lord - how He extends the shadow, and if He willed, He could have made it stationary? Then We made the sun for it an indication.
Yusuf Ali Hast thou not turned thy vision to thy Lord?- How He doth prolong the shadow! If He willed, He could make it stationary! then do We make the sun its guide;

25.46

surah 25 - verse 46

Arberry thereafter We seize it to Ourselves, drawing it gently.
Maududi then (as the sun climbs up), We roll it up little by little towards Ourselves.
Pickthall Then We withdraw it unto Us, a gradual withdrawal?
Sahih Then We hold it in hand for a brief grasp.
Yusuf Ali Then We draw it in towards Ourselves,- a contraction by easy stages.

25.47

surah 25 - verse 47

Arberry It is He who appointed the night for you to be a garment and sleep for a rest, and day He appointed for a rising.
Maududi And it is Allah Who has ordained the night as a garment for you, and the sleep as a repose of death, and the day as the time of return to life.
Pickthall And He it is Who maketh night a covering for you, and sleep repose, and maketh day a resurrection.
Sahih And it is He who has made the night for you as clothing and sleep [a means for] rest and has made the day a resurrection.
Yusuf Ali And He it is Who makes the Night as a Robe for you, and Sleep as Repose, and makes the Day (as it were) a Resurrection.

25.48

surah 25 - verse 48

Arberry And it is He who has loosed the winds, bearing good tidings before His mercy; and We sent down from heaven pure water
Maududi And it is He, Who drives the winds to be the harbingers of His mercy: then He sends down pure water from the sky
Pickthall And He it is Who sendeth the winds, glad tidings heralding His mercy, and We send down purifying water from the sky,
Sahih And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy, and We send down from the sky pure water
Yusuf Ali And He it is Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, going before His mercy, and We send down pure water from the sky,-

25.49

surah 25 - verse 49

Arberry so that We might revive a dead land, and give to drink of it, of that We created, cattle and men a many.
Maududi so that He may revive the dead land, and quench the thirst of many of His creatures from among beasts and men.
Pickthall That We may give life thereby to a dead land, and We give many beasts and men that We have created to drink thereof.
Sahih That We may bring to life thereby a dead land and give it as drink to those We created of numerous livestock and men.
Yusuf Ali That with it We may give life to a dead land, and slake the thirst of things We have created,- cattle and men in great numbers.

25.50

surah 25 - verse 50

Arberry We have indeed turned it about amongst them, so that they may remember; yet most men refuse all but unbelief.
Maududi We present the same phenomenon over and over again before them so that they may learn a lesson from it; but most people decline to adopt any other attitude than of disbelief and ingratitude.
Pickthall And verily We have repeated it among them that they may remember, but most of mankind begrudge aught save ingratitude.
Sahih And We have certainly distributed it among them that they might be reminded, but most of the people refuse except disbelief.
Yusuf Ali And We have distributed the (water) amongst them, in order that they may celebrate (our) praises, but most men are averse (to aught) but (rank) ingratitude.

25.51

surah 25 - verse 51

Arberry If We had willed, We would have raised up in every city a warner.
Maududi Had We willed, We would have raised up a separate Warner in each habitation.
Pickthall If We willed, We could raise up a warner in every village.
Sahih And if We had willed, We could have sent into every city a warner.
Yusuf Ali Had it been Our Will, We could have sent a warner to every centre of population.

25.52

surah 25 - verse 52

Arberry So obey not the unbelievers, but struggle with them thereby mightily.
Maududi So, O Prophet, do not yield to the disbelievers, but wage a Jihad against them with this Qur'an.
Pickthall So obey not the disbelievers, but strive against them herewith with a great endeavour.
Sahih So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with the Qur'an a great striving.
Yusuf Ali Therefore listen not to the Unbelievers, but strive against them with the utmost strenuousness, with the (Qur'an).

25.53

surah 25 - verse 53

Arberry And it is He who let forth the two seas, this one Sweet, grateful to taste, and this salt, bitter to the tongue, and He set between them a barrier, and a ban forbidden.
Maududi And it is He, Who has let loose the two seas, one palatable and sweet, the other bitter and saltish, and there is a partition between them, which is an insurmountable barrier.
Pickthall And He it is Who hath given independence to the two seas (though they meet); one palatable, sweet, and the other saltish, bitter; and hath set a bar and a forbidding ban between them.
Sahih And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition.
Yusuf Ali It is He Who has let free the two bodies of flowing water: One palatable and sweet, and the other salt and bitter; yet has He made a barrier between them, a partition that is forbidden to be passed.

25.54

surah 25 - verse 54

Arberry And it is He who created of water a mortal, and made him kindred of blood and marriage; thy Lord is All-powerful.
Maududi And it is He, Who created man from water: then from him He caused two kinds of kindred, by blood and by marriage: your Lord is AI I-Powerful.
Pickthall And He it is Who hath created man from water, and hath appointed for him kindred by blood and kindred by marriage; for thy Lord is ever Powerful.
Sahih And it is He who has created from water a human being and made him [a relative by] lineage and marriage. And ever is your Lord competent [concerning creation].
Yusuf Ali It is He Who has created man from water: then has He established relationships of lineage and marriage: for thy Lord has power (over all things).

25.55

surah 25 - verse 55

Arberry And they serve, apart from God, what neither profits them nor hurts them; and the unbeliever is ever a partisan against his Lord.
Maududi Yet they worship, instead of Allah, those who can neither benefit them nor harm them: more than this, the disbeliever has become a helper of every rebel against his Lord.
Pickthall Yet they worship instead of Allah that which can neither benefit them nor hurt them. The disbeliever was ever a partisan against his Lord.
Sahih But they worship rather than Allah that which does not benefit them or harm them, and the disbeliever is ever, against his Lord, an assistant [to Satan].
Yusuf Ali Yet do they worship, besides Allah, things that can neither profit them nor harm them: and the Misbeliever is a helper (of Evil), against his own Lord!

25.56

surah 25 - verse 56

Arberry We have sent thee not, except good tidings to bear, and warning.
Maududi O Muhammad, We have sent you only to proclaim good tidings and to give warning.
Pickthall And We have sent thee (O Muhammad) only as a bearer of good tidings and a warner.
Sahih And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.
Yusuf Ali But thee We only sent to give glad tidings and admonition.

25.57

surah 25 - verse 57

Arberry Say: 'I do not ask of you a wage for this, except for him who wishes to take to his Lord a way.'
Maududi Tell them, "I do not ask of you any recompense for this work: I only ask of the one, who will, to adopt the way of his Lord.
Pickthall Say: I ask of you no reward for this, save that whoso will may choose a way unto his Lord.
Sahih Say, "I do not ask of you for it any payment - only that whoever wills might take to his Lord a way."
Yusuf Ali Say: "No reward do I ask of you for it but this: that each one who will may take a (straight) Path to his Lord."

25.58

surah 25 - verse 58

Arberry Put thy trust in the Living God, the Undying, and proclaim His praise. Sufficiently is He aware of His servants sins
Maududi O Muhammad trust in that Allah Who is Ever-Living and will never die' Glorify Him with His praise, for He alone is sufficient to be aware of the sins of His servants.
Pickthall And trust thou in the Living One Who dieth not, and hymn His praise. He sufficeth as the Knower of His bondmen's sins,
Sahih And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die, and exalt [Allah] with His praise. And sufficient is He to be, with the sins of His servants, Acquainted -
Yusuf Ali And put thy trust in Him Who lives and dies not; and celebrate his praise; and enough is He to be acquainted with the faults of His servants;-

25.59

surah 25 - verse 59

Arberry who created the heavens and the earth, and what between them is, in six days, then sat Himself upon the Throne, the All-compassionate: ask any informed of Him!
Maududi In six days He created the earth and the heavens and all that is between them; then He established Himself on the "Throne" (of the Kingdom of the uriverse). (He is) the Merciful: as to His Glory, ask the one who knows.
Pickthall Who created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in six Days, then He mounted the Throne. The Beneficent! Ask anyone informed concerning Him!
Sahih He who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days and then established Himself above the Throne - the Most Merciful, so ask about Him one well informed.
Yusuf Ali He Who created the heavens and the earth and all that is between, in six days, and is firmly established on the Throne (of Authority): Allah Most Gracious: ask thou, then, about Him of any acquainted (with such things).

25.60

surah 25 - verse 60

Arberry But when they are told, 'Bow yourselves to the All-merciful,' they say, 'And what is the All-merciful? Shall we bow ourselves to what thou biddest us?' And it increases them in aversion.
Maududi When it is said to them. "Prostrate yourselves before the Merciful," they retort, "What is the Merciful? Would you have us prostrate ourselves before whomsoever you will?" And this invitation only helps to increase their hatred all the more.
Pickthall And when it is said unto them: Prostrate to the Beneficent! they say: And what is the Beneficent? Are we to prostrate to whatever thou (Muhammad) biddest us? And it increaseth aversion in them.
Sahih And when it is said to them, "Prostrate to the Most Merciful," they say, "And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to that which you order us?" And it increases them in aversion.
Yusuf Ali When it is said to them, "Prostrate to (Allah) Most Gracious!", they say, "And what is (Allah) Most Gracious? Shall we prostrate to that which thou commandest us?" And it increases their flight (from the Truth).
