Surah Ad Dukhan (The Smoke)

44.41

surah 44 - verse 41

translator's name verse
Arberry the day a master shall avail nothing a client, and they shall not be helped,
Maududi the Day when a friend shall be of no avail to his friend nor shall they be helped,
Pickthall A day when friend can in naught avail friend, nor can they be helped,
Sahih The Day when no relation will avail a relation at all, nor will they be helped -
Yusuf Ali The Day when no protector can avail his client in aught, and no help can they receive,

44.42

surah 44 - verse 42

Arberry save him upon whom God has mercy; He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate.
Maududi except those to whom Allah shows mercy. He is the Most Mighty, the Most Compassionate.
Pickthall Save him on whom Allah hath mercy. Lo! He is the Mighty, the Merciful.
Sahih Except those [believers] on whom Allah has mercy. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
Yusuf Ali Except such as receive Allah's Mercy: for He is Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

44.43

Arberry Lo, the Tree of Ez-Zakkoum
Maududi The tree of al-Zaqqum
Pickthall Lo! the tree of Zaqqum,
Sahih Indeed, the tree of zaqqum
Yusuf Ali Verily the tree of Zaqqum

44.44

surah 44 - verse 44

Arberry is the food of the guilty,
Maududi shall be the food of the sinful.
Pickthall The food of the sinner!
Sahih Is food for the sinful.
Yusuf Ali Will be the food of the Sinful,-

surah 44 - verse 45

Arberry like molten copper, bubbling in the belly
Maududi Like dregs of oil, it will boil in their bellies
Pickthall Like molten brass, it seetheth in their bellies
Sahih Like murky oil, it boils within bellies
Yusuf Ali Like molten brass; it will boil in their insides.

44.46

Arberry as boiling water bubbles.
Maududi like boiling water.
Pickthall As the seething of boiling water.
Sahih Like the boiling of scalding water.
Yusuf Ali Like the boiling of scalding water.

44.47

surah 44 - verse 47

Arberry 'Take him, and thrust him into the midst of Hell,
Maududi “Seize him and drag him to the middle of the Blazing Fire,
Pickthall (And it will be said): Take him and drag him to the midst of hell,
Sahih [It will be commanded], "Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire,
Yusuf Ali (A voice will cry: "Seize ye him and drag him into the midst of the Blazing Fire!

44.48

surah 44 - verse 48

Arberry then pour over his head the chastisement of boiling water!'
Maududi then pour boiling water over his head as chastisement.
Pickthall Then pour upon his head the torment of boiling water.
Sahih Then pour over his head from the torment of scalding water."
Yusuf Ali "Then pour over his head the Penalty of Boiling Water,

surah 44 - verse 49

Arberry 'Taste! Surely thou art the mighty, the noble.
Maududi Taste this, you are a person mighty and noble!
Pickthall (Saying): Taste! Lo! thou wast forsooth the mighty, the noble!
Sahih [It will be said], "Taste! Indeed, you are the honored, the noble!
Yusuf Ali "Taste thou (this)! Truly wast thou mighty, full of honour!

44.50

surah 44 - verse 50

Arberry This is that concerning which you were doubting.'
Maududi This is what you used to doubt.”
Pickthall Lo! this is that whereof ye used to doubt.
Sahih Indeed, this is what you used to dispute."
Yusuf Ali "Truly this is what ye used to doubt!"

44.51

surah 44 - verse 51

Arberry Surely the godfearing shall be in a station secure
Maududi Verily the God-fearing shall be in a secure place
Pickthall Lo! those who kept their duty will be in a place secured.
Sahih Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place;
Yusuf Ali As to the Righteous (they will be) in a position of Security,

Arberry among gardens and fountains,
Maududi amidst gardens and springs.
Pickthall Amid gardens and watersprings,
Sahih Within gardens and springs,
Yusuf Ali Among Gardens and Springs;

44.53

surah 44 - verse 53

Arberry robed in silk and brocade, set face to face.
Maududi Attired in silk and brocade, they shall be arrayed face to face.
Pickthall Attired in silk and silk embroidery, facing one another.
Sahih Wearing [garments of] fine silk and brocade, facing each other.
Yusuf Ali Dressed in fine silk and in rich brocade, they will face each other;

44.54

surah 44 - verse 54

Arberry Even so; and We shall espouse them to wide-eyed houris,
Maududi Thus shall it be: and We shall espouse them to fair, wide-eyed maidens.
Pickthall Even so (it will be). And We shall wed them unto fair ones with wide, lovely eyes.
Sahih Thus. And We will marry them to fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes.
Yusuf Ali So; and We shall join them to fair women with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes.

44.55

surah 44 - verse 55

Arberry therein calling for every fruit, secure.
Maududi While resting in security, they shall call for all kinds of fruit.
Pickthall They call therein for every fruit in safety.
Sahih They will call therein for every [kind of] fruit - safe and secure.
Yusuf Ali There can they call for every kind of fruit in peace and security;

44.56

surah 44 - verse 56

Arberry They shall not taste therein of death, save the first death, And He shall guard them against the chastisement of Hell --
Maududi They shall not taste death except the death in this world. And Allah will save them from the chastisement of Hell
Pickthall They taste not death therein, save the first death. And He hath saved them from the doom of hell,
Sahih They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will have protected them from the punishment of Hellfire
Yusuf Ali Nor will they there taste Death, except the first death; and He will preserve them from the Penalty of the Blazing Fire,-

44.57

surah 44 - verse 57

translator's name verse
Arberry a bounty from thy Lord; that is the mighty triumph.
Maududi as a favour from your Lord. That is the great triumph.
Pickthall A bounty from thy Lord. That is the supreme triumph.
Sahih As bounty from your Lord. That is what is the great attainment.
Yusuf Ali As a Bounty from thy Lord! that will be the supreme achievement!

44.58

surah 44 - verse 58

Arberry Now We have made it easy by thy tongue, that haply they may remember.
Maududi (O Prophet), We have made this Book easy in your tongue so that they may take heed.
Pickthall And We have made (this Scripture) easy in thy language only that they may heed.
Sahih And indeed, We have eased the Qur'an in your tongue that they might be reminded.
Yusuf Ali Verily, We have made this (Qur'an) easy, in thy tongue, in order that they may give heed.

44.59

surah 44 - verse 59

Arberry So be on the watch; they too are on the watch.
Maududi Wait, then; they too are waiting.
Pickthall Wait then (O Muhammad). Lo! they (too) are waiting.
Sahih So watch, [O Muhammad]; indeed, they are watching [for your end].
Yusuf Ali So wait thou and watch; for they (too) are waiting.
