Surah Ad Dukhan (The Smoke)

44.21

surah 44 - verse 21

Arberry 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!'
Maududi But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).”
Pickthall And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go.
Sahih But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone."
Yusuf Ali "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me."

44.22

surah 44 - verse 22

Arberry And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.'
Maududi Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.”
Pickthall And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk.
Sahih And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people.
Yusuf Ali (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin."

44.23

surah 44 - verse 23

Arberry 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed.
Maududi (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued.
Pickthall Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed,
Sahih [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued.
Yusuf Ali (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued.

44.24

surah 44 - verse 24

Arberry And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.'
Maududi And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.”
Pickthall And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host.
Sahih And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned."
Yusuf Ali "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned."

44.25

surah 44 - verse 25

Arberry They left how many gardens and fountains,
Maududi How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains
Pickthall How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind,
Sahih How much they left behind of gardens and springs
Yusuf Ali How many were the gardens and springs they left behind,

Arberry sown fields, and how noble a station,
Maududi and sown fields and splendid mansions,
Pickthall And the cornlands and the goodly sites
Sahih And crops and noble sites
Yusuf Ali And corn-fields and noble buildings,

44.27

surah 44 - verse 27

Arberry and what prosperity they had rejoiced in!
Maududi and the life of ease in which they took delight!
Pickthall And pleasant things wherein they took delight!
Sahih And comfort wherein they were amused.
Yusuf Ali And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight!

44.28

surah 44 - verse 28

Arberry Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people.
Maududi Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that.
Pickthall Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk;
Sahih Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people.
Yusuf Ali Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)!

44.29

surah 44 - verse 29

Arberry Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited;
Maududi Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite.
Pickthall And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved.
Sahih And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved.
Yusuf Ali And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again).

44.30

surah 44 - verse 30

Arberry and We delivered the Children of Israel from the humbling chastisement,
Maududi Thus did We deliver the Children of Israel from the humiliating chastisement,
Pickthall And We delivered the Children of Israel from the shameful doom;
Sahih And We certainly saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment -
Yusuf Ali We did deliver aforetime the Children of Israel from humiliating Punishment,

44.31

surah 44 - verse 31

Arberry from Pharaoh; surely he was a high One, of the prodigals;
Maududi from Pharaoh who was most prominent among the prodigals.
Pickthall (We delivered them) from Pharaoh. Lo! he was a tyrant of the wanton ones.
Sahih From Pharaoh. Indeed, he was a haughty one among the transgressors.
Yusuf Ali Inflicted by Pharaoh, for he was arrogant (even) among inordinate transgressors.

44.32

surah 44 - verse 32

Arberry and We chose them, out of a knowledge, above all beings,
Maududi We knowingly exalted them (i.e., the Children of Israel) above other peoples of the world
Pickthall And We chose them, purposely, above (all) creatures.
Sahih And We certainly chose them by knowledge over [all] the worlds.
Yusuf Ali And We chose them aforetime above the nations, knowingly,

44.33

surah 44 - verse 33

Arberry and gave them signs wherein there was a manifest trial.
Maududi and bestowed upon them the Signs wherein lay an evident test for them.
Pickthall And We gave them portents wherein was a clear trial.
Sahih And We gave them of signs that in which there was a clear trial.
Yusuf Ali And granted them Signs in which there was a manifest trial

44.34

surah 44 - verse 34

Arberry These men do say,
Maududi Indeed these people say:
Pickthall Lo! these, forsooth, are saying:
Sahih Indeed, these [disbelievers] are saying,
Yusuf Ali As to these (Quraish), they say forsooth:

44.35

surah 44 - verse 35

Arberry 'There is nothing but our first death; we shall not be revived.
Maududi “This is our first and only death, and we shall never be raised again.
Pickthall There is naught but our first death, and we shall not be raised again.
Sahih "There is not but our first death, and we will not be resurrected.
Yusuf Ali "There is nothing beyond our first death, and we shall not be raised again.

44.36

surah 44 - verse 36

Arberry Bring us our fathers, if you speak truly!'
Maududi Bring back to us our fathers if you are truthful.”
Pickthall Bring back our fathers, if ye speak the truth!
Sahih Then bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful."
Yusuf Ali "Then bring (back) our forefathers, if what ye say is true!"

44.37

surah 44 - verse 37

Arberry Are they better, or the people of Tubba' and those before them whom We destroyed? They were surely sinners.
Maududi Are these better or the people of Tubba and those who went before them? We destroyed them for they were a criminal people.
Pickthall Are they better, or the folk of Tubb'a and those before them? We destroyed them, for surely they were guilty.
Sahih Are they better or the people of Tubba' and those before them? We destroyed them, [for] indeed, they were criminals.
Yusuf Ali What! Are they better than the people of Tubba and those who were before them? We destroyed them because they were guilty of sin.

44.38

surah 44 - verse 38

Arberry We created not the heavens and earth, and all that between them is, in play;
Maududi It was not in idle sport that We created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them.
Pickthall And We created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, in play.
Sahih And We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them in play.
Yusuf Ali We created not the heavens, the earth, and all between them, merely in (idle) sport:

44.39

surah 44 - verse 39

Arberry We created them not save in truth; but most of them know it not.
Maududi We did not create them except in Truth. But most of them do not know.
Pickthall We created them not save with truth; but most of them know not.
Sahih We did not create them except in truth, but most of them do not know.
Yusuf Ali We created them not except for just ends: but most of them do not understand.

44.40

surah 44 - verse 40

Arberry Surely the Day of Decision shall be their appointed time, all together,
Maududi The Day of Final Decision is the appointed time for all;
Pickthall Assuredly the Day of Decision is the term for all of them,
Sahih Indeed, the Day of Judgement is the appointed time for them all -
Yusuf Ali Verily the Day of sorting out is the time appointed for all of them,-
