Surah Al Mu'min (The Believer), also known as Surah Al Ghafir (The Forgiver)

40.41

surah 40 - verse 41

Arberry O my people, how is it with me, that I call you to salvation, and you call me to the Fire?
Maududi My people, how is it that I call you to salvation while you call me to the Fire;
Pickthall And, O my people! What aileth me that I call you unto deliverance when ye call me unto the Fire?
Sahih And O my people, how is it that I invite you to salvation while you invite me to the Fire?
Yusuf Ali "And O my people! How (strange) it is for me to call you to Salvation while ye call me to the Fire!

40.42

surah 40 - verse 42

Arberry You call me to disbelieve in God, and to associate with Him that whereof I have no knowledge, while I call you to the All-mighty, the All-forgiving.
Maududi you call me to deny Allah and to associate with Him as His partners those regarding whom I have no knowledge (that they are Allah's partners in His Divinity), whereas I call you to the Most Mighty, the Most Forgiving?
Pickthall Ye call me to disbelieve in Allah and ascribe unto Him as partners that whereof I have no knowledge, while I call you unto the Mighty, the Forgiver.
Sahih You invite me to disbelieve in Allah and associate with Him that of which I have no knowledge, and I invite you to the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.
Yusuf Ali "Ye do call upon me to blaspheme against Allah, and to join with Him partners of whom I have no knowledge; and I call you to the Exalted in Power, Who forgives again and again!"

40.43

surah 40 - verse 43

Arberry No doubt that what you call me to has no call heard, in this world or in the world to come, that to God we return, and that the prodigal are the inhabitants of the Fire.
Maududi There is no doubt that those whom you call me to have no claim to be called upon in this world and in the Hereafter. Certainly to Allah shall be our return, and those who exceed the limits are destined to the Fire.
Pickthall Assuredly that whereunto ye call me hath no claim in the world or in the Hereafter, and our return will be unto Allah, and the prodigals will be owners of the Fire.
Sahih Assuredly, that to which you invite me has no [response to a] supplication in this world or in the Hereafter; and indeed, our return is to Allah, and indeed, the transgressors will be companions of the Fire.
Yusuf Ali "Without doubt ye do call me to one who is not fit to be called to, whether in this world, or in the Hereafter; our return will be to Allah; and the Transgressors will be Companions of the Fire!

40.44

surah 40 - verse 44

Arberry You will remember what I say to you. I commit my affair to God; surely God sees His servants.'
Maududi Soon you shall remember what I say to you. I entrust my affairs to Allah. Surely Allah is watchful over His servants.”
Pickthall And ye will remember what I say unto you. I confide my cause unto Allah. Lo! Allah is Seer of (His) slaves.
Sahih And you will remember what I [now] say to you, and I entrust my affair to Allah. Indeed, Allah is Seeing of [His] servants."
Yusuf Ali "Soon will ye remember what I say to you (now), My (own) affair I commit to Allah: for Allah (ever) watches over His Servants."

40.45

surah 40 - verse 45

Arberry So God guarded him against the evil things of their devising, and there encompassed the folk of Pharaoh the evil chastisement,
Maududi Eventually Allah saved the person endowed with faith from all the evils of their guile, and a woeful chastisement encompassed the Pharaonites.
Pickthall So Allah warded off from him the evils which they plotted, while a dreadful doom encompassed Pharaoh's folk,
Sahih So Allah protected him from the evils they plotted, and the people of Pharaoh were enveloped by the worst of punishment -
Yusuf Ali Then Allah saved him from (every) ill that they plotted (against him), but the burnt of the Penalty encompassed on all sides the People of Pharaoh.

40.46

surah 40 - verse 46

Arberry the Fire, to which they shall be exposed morning and evening; and on the day when the Hour is come: 'Admit the folk of Pharaoh into the most terrible chastisement!'
Maududi They are exposed to the Fire every morning and evening; and when the Last Hour will come to pass, a command shall be given: “Admit the Pharaonites to an even more severe chastisement.”
Pickthall The Fire; they are exposed to it morning and evening; and on the day when the Hour upriseth (it is said): Cause Pharaoh's folk to enter the most awful doom.
Sahih The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."
Yusuf Ali In front of the Fire will they be brought, morning and evening: And (the sentence will be) on the Day that Judgment will be established: "Cast ye the People of Pharaoh into the severest Penalty!"

40.47

surah 40 - verse 47

Arberry And when they argue one with the other in the Fire, and the weak say unto those who waxed proud, 'Why, we were your followers; will you avail us now against any part of the Fire?'
Maududi Just imagine when they will remonstrate with one another in Hell. The weak ones will say to those who waxed proud: “We were your followers. Will you, then, lighten for us a part of our suffering of the Fire?”
Pickthall And when they wrangle in the Fire, the weak say unto those who were proud: Lo! we were a following unto you; will ye therefor rid us of a portion of the Fire?
Sahih And [mention] when they will argue within the Fire, and the weak will say to those who had been arrogant, "Indeed, we were [only] your followers, so will you relieve us of a share of the Fire?"
Yusuf Ali Behold, they will dispute with each other in the Fire! The weak ones (who followed) will say to those who had been arrogant, "We but followed you: Can ye then take (on yourselves) from us some share of the Fire?

40.48

surah 40 - verse 48

Arberry Then those who waxed proud shall say, 'Every one of us is in it; indeed, God already has passed judgment between His servants.'
Maududi Those who had waxed proud will reply: “All of us are in it. Allah has already passed His judgement among His servants.”
Pickthall Those who were proud say: Lo! we are all (together) herein. Lo! Allah hath judged between (His) slaves.
Sahih Those who had been arrogant will say, "Indeed, all [of us] are in it. Indeed, Allah has judged between the servants."
Yusuf Ali Those who had been arrogant will say: "We are all in this (Fire)! Truly, Allah has judged between (his) Servants!"

40.49

surah 40 - verse 49

Arberry And those who are in the Fire will say to the keepers of Gehenna, 'Call on your Lord, to lighten for us one day of the chastisement!'
Maududi Those suffering in the Fire will say to the keepers of Hell: “Call upon your Lord to lighten the chastisement for us just for a day.”
Pickthall And those in the Fire say unto the guards of hell: Entreat your Lord that He relieve us of a day of the torment.
Sahih And those in the Fire will say to the keepers of Hell, "Supplicate your Lord to lighten for us a day from the punishment."
Yusuf Ali Those in the Fire will say to the Keepers of Hell: "Pray to your Lord to lighten us the Penalty for a day (at least)!"

40.50

surah 40 - verse 50

Arberry They shall say, 'Did not your Messengers bring you the clear signs?' They shall say, 'Yes indeed.' They shall say, 'Then do you call!' But the calling of the unbelievers is only in error.
Maududi The keepers of Hell will ask: “Did your Messengers not come to you with Clear Signs?” They will say: “Yes (they did).” The keepers of Hell will say: “Then you yourselves should call (upon the Lord). And the call of the unbelievers will end in vain.”
Pickthall They say: Came not your messengers unto you with clear proofs? They say: Yea, verily. They say: Then do ye pray, although the prayer of disbelievers is in vain.
Sahih They will say, "Did there not come to you your messengers with clear proofs?" They will say, "Yes." They will reply, "Then supplicate [yourselves], but the supplication of the disbelievers is not except in error."
Yusuf Ali They will say: "Did there not come to you your messengers with Clear Signs?" They will say, "Yes". They will reply, "Then pray (as ye like)! But the prayer of those without Faith is nothing but (futile wandering) in (mazes of) error!"

40.51

surah 40 - verse 51

Arberry Surely We shall help Our Messengers and those who have believed, in the present life, and upon the day when the witnesses arise,
Maududi Surely We shall help Our Messengers and the believers in the life of this world and on the Day when witnesses will rise to testify,
Pickthall Lo! We verily do help Our messengers, and those who believe, in the life of the world and on the day when the witnesses arise,
Sahih Indeed, We will support Our messengers and those who believe during the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand -
Yusuf Ali We will, without doubt, help our messengers and those who believe, (both) in this world's life and on the Day when the Witnesses will stand forth,-

40.52

surah 40 - verse 52

Arberry upon the day when their excuses shall not profit the evildoers, and theirs shall be the curse, and theirs the evil abode.
Maududi the Day when the excuses offered by the wrong-doers shall not avail them. They shall be victims of the curse and a woeful abode.
Pickthall The day when their excuse availeth not the evil-doers, and theirs is the curse, and theirs the ill abode.
Sahih The Day their excuse will not benefit the wrongdoers, and they will have the curse, and they will have the worst home.
Yusuf Ali The Day when no profit will it be to Wrong-doers to present their excuses, but they will (only) have the Curse and the Home of Misery.

40.53

surah 40 - verse 53

Arberry We also gave Moses the guidance, and We bequeathed upon the Children of Israel the Book
Maududi We surely guided Moses and made the Children of Israel the heirs of the Book
Pickthall And We verily gave Moses the guidance, and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit the Scripture,
Sahih And We had certainly given Moses guidance, and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit the Scripture
Yusuf Ali We did aforetime give Moses the (Book of) Guidance, and We gave the book in inheritance to the Children of Israel,-

40.54

surah 40 - verse 54

Arberry for a guidance and for a reminder to men possessed of minds.
Maududi which was a guidance and good counsel to people endowed with understanding and wisdom.

Sahih As guidance and a reminder for those of understanding.

40.55

surah 40 - verse 55

Arberry So be thou patient; surely God's promise is true. And ask forgiveness for thy sin, and proclaim the praise of thy Lord at evening and dawn.
Maududi Be steadfast, then, (O Prophet), Allah's promise is true. Seek forgiveness for your shortcomings, and celebrate the praise of your Lord, evening and morning.
Pickthall Then have patience (O Muhammad). Lo! the promise of Allah is true. And ask forgiveness of thy sin, and hymn the praise of thy Lord at fall of night and in the early hours.
Sahih So be patient, [O Muhammad]. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.
Yusuf Ali Patiently, then, persevere: for the Promise of Allah is true: and ask forgiveness for thy fault, and celebrate the Praises of thy Lord in the evening and in the morning.

40.56

surah 40 - verse 56

Arberry Those who dispute concerning the signs of God, without any authority come to them, in their breasts is only pride, that they shall never attain. So seek thou refuge in God; surely He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing.
Maududi Verily those who dispute regarding the Signs of Allah without any evidence that might have come to them, nothing but vain pride fills their hearts. Yet they shall never be able to satisfy the pride with which they are puffed up. So seek refuge with Allah. Verily He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
Pickthall Lo! those who wrangle concerning the revelations of Allah without a warrant having come unto them, there is naught else in their breasts save pride which they will never attain. So take thou refuge in Allah. Lo! He, only He, is the Hearer, the Seer.
Sahih Indeed, those who dispute concerning the signs of Allah without [any] authority having come to them - there is not within their breasts except pride, [the extent of] which they cannot reach. So seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Seeing.
Yusuf Ali Those who dispute about the signs of Allah without any authority bestowed on them,- there is nothing in their breasts but (the quest of) greatness, which they shall never attain to: seek refuge, then, in Allah: It is He Who hears and sees (all things).

40.57

surah 40 - verse 57

Arberry Certainly the creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of men; but most men know it not.
Maududi Surely the creation of the heavens and the earth is a greater act than the creation of human beings. But most people do not know.
Pickthall Assuredly the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind; but most of mankind know not.
Sahih The creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know.
Yusuf Ali Assuredly the creation of the heavens and the earth is a greater (matter) than the creation of men: Yet most men understand not.

40.58

surah 40 - verse 58

Arberry Not equal are the blind and the seeing man, those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, and the wrong-doer. Little do you reflect.
Maududi Never can the blind and the seeing be equal; nor those that believe and act righteously and those that do evil. Little do you understand.
Pickthall And the blind man and the seer are not equal, neither are those who believe and do good works (equal with) the evil-doer. Little do ye reflect!
Sahih And not equal are the blind and the seeing, nor are those who believe and do righteous deeds and the evildoer. Little do you remember.
Yusuf Ali Not equal are the blind and those who (clearly) see: Nor are (equal) those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and those who do evil. Little do ye learn by admonition!

40.59

surah 40 - verse 59

Arberry The Hour is coming, no doubt of it, but most men do not believe.
Maududi The Hour will indeed come; there is no doubt about that. Yet most people do not believe.
Pickthall Lo! the Hour is surely coming, there is no doubt thereof; yet most of mankind believe not.
Sahih Indeed, the Hour is coming - no doubt about it - but most of the people do not believe.
Yusuf Ali The Hour will certainly come: Therein is no doubt: Yet most men believe not.

40.60

surah 40 - verse 60

Arberry Your Lord has said, 'Call upon Me and I will answer you. Surely those who wax too proud to do Me service shall enter Gehenna utterly abject.'
Maududi Your Lord said: “Pray to Me, and I will accept your prayers. Surely those who wax too proud to worship Me shall enter Hell, utterly abased.”
Pickthall And your Lord hath said: Pray unto Me and I will hear your prayer. Lo! those who scorn My service, they will enter hell, disgraced.
Sahih And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.
Yusuf Ali And your Lord says: "Call on Me; I will answer your (Prayer): but those who are too arrogant to serve Me will surely find themselves in Hell - in humiliation!"
