40.67

surah 40 - verse 67

translator's name verse
Arberry It is He who created you of dust then of a sperm-drop, then of a blood-clot, then He delivers you as infants, then that you may come of age, then that you may be old men -- though some of you there are who die before it -- and that you may reach a stated term; haply you will understand.
Maududi He it is Who created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clot; then He brings you out as an infant, then causes you to grow into full maturity, and then causes you to grow further so that you may reach old age, while some of you He recalls earlier. All this is in order that you may reach an appointed term and that you may understand (the Truth).
Pickthall He it is Who created you from dust, then from a drop (of seed) then from a clot, then bringeth you forth as a child, then (ordaineth) that ye attain full strength and afterward that ye become old men - though some among you die before - and that ye reach an appointed term, that haply ye may understand.
Sahih It is He who created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot; then He brings you out as a child; then [He develops you] that you reach your [time of] maturity, then [further] that you become elders. And among you is he who is taken in death before [that], so that you reach a specified term; and perhaps you will use reason.
Yusuf Ali It is He Who has created you from dust then from a sperm-drop, then from a leech-like clot; then does he get you out (into the light) as a child: then lets you (grow and) reach your age of full strength; then lets you become old,- though of you there are some who die before;- and lets you reach a Term appointed; in order that ye may learn wisdom.

40.68

Arberry It is He who gives life, and makes to die; and when He decrees a thing, He but says to it 'Be,' and it is.
Maududi He it is Who gives life and causes death. Whenever He decrees a thing, He only commands to it “Be”, and it is.
Pickthall He it is Who quickeneth and giveth death. When He ordaineth a thing, He saith unto it only: Be! and it is.
Sahih He it is who gives life and causes death; and when He decrees a matter, He but says to it, "Be," and it is.
Yusuf Ali It is He Who gives Life and Death; and when He decides upon an affair, He says to it, "Be", and it is.

Sahih Those who deny the Book and that with which We sent Our messengers - they are going to know,

40.74

surah 40 - verse 74

translator's name verse
Arberry They shall say, 'They have gone astray from us; nay, but it was nothing at all that we called upon aforetime.' Even so God leads astray the unbelievers.
Maududi associated with Allah in His Divinity?” They will say: “We have lost them; rather, we never used to call upon anyone before.” Thus will Allah cause them to stumble in error.
Pickthall Beside Allah? They say: They have failed us; but we used not to pray to anything before. Thus doth Allah send astray the disbelievers (in His guidance).
Sahih Other than Allah?" They will say, "They have departed from us; rather, we did not used to invoke previously anything." Thus does Allah put astray the disbelievers.
Yusuf Ali "In derogation of Allah?" They will reply: "They have left us in the lurch: Nay, we invoked not, of old, anything (that had real existence)." Thus does Allah leave the Unbelievers to stray.

40.75

surah 40 - verse 75

translator's name verse
Arberry 'That is because you rejoiced in the earth without right, and were exultant.
Maududi (They will be told): “This is because while you were on earth you took delight in untruth and exulted in it.
Pickthall (And it is said unto them): This is because ye exulted in the earth without right, and because ye were petulant.
Sahih [The angels will say], "That was because you used to exult upon the earth without right and you used to behave insolently.

Sahih Enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant."
Yusuf Ali "Enter ye the gates of Hell, to dwell therein: and evil is (this) abode of the arrogant!"

40.77

surah 40 - verse 77

translator's name verse
Arberry So be thou patient; surely God's promise is true. Whether We show thee a part of that We promise them, or We call thee unto Us, to Us they shall be returned.
Maududi So be patient, (O Prophet). Surely Allah's promise is true. Whether We show them a part of the woeful consequences against which We warn them (while you are still in their midst) or We recall you (from this world) before that, eventually it is to Us that they shall be brought back.
Pickthall Then have patience (O Muhammad). Lo! the promise of Allah is true. And whether we let thee see a part of that which We promise them, or (whether) We cause thee to die, still unto Us they will be brought back.
Sahih So be patient, [O Muhammad]; indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And whether We show you some of what We have promised them or We take you in death, it is to Us they will be returned.
Yusuf Ali So persevere in patience; for the Promise of Allah is true: and whether We show thee (in this life) some part of what We promise them,- or We take thy soul (to Our Mercy) (before that),-(in any case) it is to Us that they shall (all) return.

40.78

surah 40 - verse 78

translator's name verse
Arberry We sent Messengers before thee; of some We have related to thee, and some We have not related to thee. It was not for any Messenger to bring a sign, save by God's leave. When God's command comes, justly the issue shall be decided; then the vain-doers shall be lost.
Maududi Indeed We sent many Messengers before you: of them there are some whose account We have narrated to you and there are others whose account We have not narrated to you. It did not lie in any Messenger's power to bring any Sign except with Allah's leave. So when Allah's decree came, the matter was decided with justice, and those steeped in error courted utter loss, then and there.
Pickthall Verily We sent messengers before thee, among them those of whom We have told thee, and some of whom We have not told thee; and it was not given to any messenger that he should bring a portent save by Allah's leave, but when Allah's commandment cometh (the cause) is judged aright, and the followers of vanity will then be lost.
Sahih And We have already sent messengers before you. Among them are those [whose stories] We have related to you, and among them are those [whose stories] We have not related to you. And it was not for any messenger to bring a sign [or verse] except by permission of Allah. So when the command of Allah comes, it will be concluded in truth, and the falsifiers will thereupon lose [all].
Yusuf Ali We did aforetime send messengers before thee: of them there are some whose story We have related to thee, and some whose story We have not related to thee. It was not (possible) for any messenger to bring a sign except by the leave of Allah: but when the Command of Allah issued, the matter was decided in truth and justice, and there perished, there and then those who stood on Falsehoods.

40.79

surah 40 - verse 79

translator's name verse
Arberry It is God who appointed for you the cattle, some of them to ride and of some you eat;
Maududi Allah it is Who has made cattle for you so that you ride some of them and from some of them you derive food.
Pickthall Allah it is Who hath appointed for you cattle, that ye may ride on some of them, and eat of some -
Sahih It is Allah who made for you the grazing animals upon which you ride, and some of them you eat.
Yusuf Ali It is Allah Who made cattle for you, that ye may use some for riding and some for food;

40.80

surah 40 - verse 80

translator's name verse
Arberry other uses also you have in them; and that on them you may attain a need in your breasts, and upon them and on the ships you are carried.
Maududi In them there are also other benefits for you, and through them you fulfil your heartfelt need (to reach places), and you are borne along upon them as upon the ships.
Pickthall (Many) benefits ye have from them - and that ye may satisfy by their means a need that is in your breasts, and may be borne upon them as upon the ship.
Sahih And for you therein are [other] benefits and that you may realize upon them a need which is in your breasts; and upon them and upon ships you are carried.
Yusuf Ali And there are (other) advantages in them for you (besides); that ye may through them attain to any need (there may be) in your hearts; and on them and on ships ye are carried.
