Surah Ash Shuaraa (The Poets)

26.21

surah 26 - verse 21

Arberry so I fled from you, fearing you. But my Lord gave me Judgment and made me one of the Envoys.
Maududi Then I fled for fear of you. Then my Lord bestowed wisdom and authority on me and made me one of the Messengers.
Pickthall Then I fled from you when I feared you, and my Lord vouchsafed me a command and appointed me (of the number) of those sent (by Him).
Sahih So I fled from you when I feared you. Then my Lord granted me wisdom and prophethood and appointed me [as one] of the messengers.
Yusuf Ali "So I fled from you (all) when I feared you; but my Lord has (since) invested me with judgment (and wisdom) and appointed me as one of the messengers.

26.22

surah 26 - verse 22

Arberry That is a blessing thou reproachest me with, having enslaved the Children of Israel.'
Maududi Now this is the favour that you tauntingly remind me of: that you enslaved the Children of Israel!"
Pickthall And this is the past favour wherewith thou reproachest me: that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel.
Sahih And is this a favor of which you remind me - that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?"
Yusuf Ali "And this is the favour with which thou dost reproach me,- that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel!"

26.23

surah 26 - verse 23

Arberry Pharaoh said, 'And what is the Lord of all Being?'
Maududi Pharaoh said: "And who is this Lord of the Universe?"
Pickthall Pharaoh said: And what is the Lord of the Worlds?
Sahih Said Pharaoh, "And what is the Lord of the worlds?"
Yusuf Ali Pharaoh said: "And what is the 'Lord and Cherisher of the worlds'?"

26.24

surah 26 - verse 24

Arberry He said, 'The Lord of the heavens and earth, and what between them is, if you have faith.'
Maududi Moses answered: "The Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them, if you were only to believe."
Pickthall (Moses) said: Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye had but sure belief.
Sahih [Moses] said, "The Lord of the heavens and earth and that between them, if you should be convinced."
Yusuf Ali (Moses) said: "The Lord and Cherisher of the heavens and the earth, and all between,- if ye want to be quite sure."

26.25

surah 26 - verse 25

Arberry Said he to those about him, 'Do you not hear?'
Maududi Pharaoh said to those around him: "Do you hear (what he says)?"
Pickthall (Pharaoh) said unto those around him: Hear ye not?
Sahih [Pharaoh] said to those around him, "Do you not hear?"
Yusuf Ali (Pharaoh) said to those around: "Did ye not listen (to what he says)?"

26.26

surah 26 - verse 26

Arberry He said, 'Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients.'
Maududi Moses said: "(He is) Your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore."
Pickthall He said: Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers.
Sahih [Moses] said, "Your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers."
Yusuf Ali (Moses) said: "Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers from the beginning!"

26.27

surah 26 - verse 27

Arberry Said he, 'Surely your Messenger who was sent to you is possessed!'
Maududi Pharaoh said to the audience: "This Messenger of yours who has been sent to you is simply mad."
Pickthall (Pharaoh) said: Lo! your messenger who hath been sent unto you is indeed a madman!
Sahih [Pharaoh] said, "Indeed, your 'messenger' who has been sent to you is mad."
Yusuf Ali (Pharaoh) said: "Truly your messenger who has been sent to you is a veritable madman!"

26.28

surah 26 - verse 28

Arberry He said, 'The Lord of the East and West, and what between them is, if you have understanding,'
Maududi Moses continued: "(He is) the Lord of the east and the west, and all between them. If you only had any understanding!"
Pickthall He said: Lord of the East and the West and all that is between them, if ye did but understand.
Sahih [Moses] said, "Lord of the east and the west and that between them, if you were to reason."
Yusuf Ali (Moses) said: "Lord of the East and the West, and all between! if ye only had sense!"

26.29

surah 26 - verse 29

Arberry Said he, 'If thou takest a god other than me, I shall surely make thee one of the imprisoned.'
Maududi Pharaoh said: "If you take any god other than me, I will certainly make you one of those (who are rotting) in prison."
Pickthall (Pharaoh) said: If thou choosest a god other than me, I assuredly shall place thee among the prisoners.
Sahih [Pharaoh] said, "If you take a god other than me, I will surely place you among those imprisoned."
Yusuf Ali (Pharaoh) said: "If thou dost put forward any god other than me, I will certainly put thee in prison!"

26.30

surah 26 - verse 30

Arberry He said, 'What, even though I brought thee something so manifest?'
Maududi Moses said: "Even if I were to bring a Clear Sign to you?"
Pickthall He said: Even though I show thee something plain?
Sahih [Moses] said, "Even if I brought you proof manifest?"
Yusuf Ali (Moses) said: "Even if I showed you something clear (and) convincing?"

26.31

surah 26 - verse 31

Arberry Said he, 'Bring it then, if thou art of the truthful.'
Maududi Pharaoh said: "Then bring it if you are truthful at all."
Pickthall (Pharaoh) said: Produce it then, if thou art of the truthful!
Sahih [Pharaoh] said, "Then bring it, if you should be of the truthful."
Yusuf Ali (Pharaoh) said: "Show it then, if thou tellest the truth!"

26.32

surah 26 - verse 32

Arberry So he cast his staff, and behold, it was a serpent manifest.
Maududi (No sooner had he said this than) Moses threw down his rod and behold, it was a veritable serpent,
Pickthall Then he flung down his staff and it became a serpent manifest,
Sahih So [Moses] threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent manifest.
Yusuf Ali So (Moses) threw his rod, and behold, it was a serpent, plain (for all to see)!

26.33

surah 26 - verse 33

Arberry And he drew forth his hand, and lo, it was white to the beholders.
Maududi and he drew his hand (out of his armpit) and lo! it had become a shining object to the beholders.
Pickthall And he drew forth his hand and lo! it was white to the beholders.
Sahih And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white for the observers.
Yusuf Ali And he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to all beholders!

26.34

surah 26 - verse 34

Arberry Said he to the Council about him, 'Surely this man is a cunning sorcerer
Maududi Pharaoh said to the nobles around him: "Surely this man is a skilled magician
Pickthall (Pharaoh) said unto the chiefs about him: Lo! this is verily a knowing wizard,
Sahih [Pharaoh] said to the eminent ones around him, "Indeed, this is a learned magician.
Yusuf Ali (Pharaoh) said to the Chiefs around him: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed:

26.35

surah 26 - verse 35

Arberry who desires to expel you from your land by his sorcery; what do you command?'
Maududi who wants to drive you out of your land by his magic. Tell us, what do you advise us?"
Pickthall Who would drive you out of your land by his magic. Now what counsel ye?
Sahih He wants to drive you out of your land by his magic, so what do you advise?"
Yusuf Ali "His plan is to get you out of your land by his sorcery; then what is it ye counsel?"

26.36

surah 26 - verse 36

Arberry They said, 'Put him and his brother off a while, and send among the cities musterers,
Maududi They said: "Detain him and his brother for a while and send forth heralds to the cities
Pickthall They said: Put him off, (him) and his brother, and send into the cities summoners
Sahih They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers
Yusuf Ali They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while), and dispatch to the Cities heralds to collect-

26.37

surah 26 - verse 37

Arberry to bring thee every cunning sorcerer.
Maududi to mobilise all skilled magicians."
Pickthall Who shall bring unto thee every knowing wizard.
Sahih Who will bring you every learned, skilled magician."
Yusuf Ali "And bring up to thee all (our) sorcerers well-versed."

26.38

surah 26 - verse 38

Arberry So the sorcerers were assembled for the appointed time of a fixed day.
Maududi So the magicians were brought together on a particular day at a set time
Pickthall So the wizards were gathered together at a set time on a day appointed.
Sahih So the magicians were assembled for the appointment of a well-known day.
Yusuf Ali So the sorcerers were got together for the appointment of a day well-known,

26.39

surah 26 - verse 39

Arberry The people were asked, 'Will you assemble?
Maududi and the people were told: "Will you join the assembly?
Pickthall And it was said unto the people: Are ye (also) gathering?
Sahih And it was said to the people, "Will you congregate
Yusuf Ali And the people were told: "Are ye (now) assembled?-

26.40

surah 26 - verse 40

Arberry Haply we shall follow the sorcerers if it should be they are the victors.'
Maududi We may perhaps follow the religion of the magicians if they triumph."
Pickthall (They said): Aye, so that we may follow the wizards if they are the winners.
Sahih That we might follow the magicians if they are the predominant?"
Yusuf Ali "That we may follow the sorcerers (in religion) if they win?"
