Surah Al Muminoon (The Believers)

23.1

surah 23 - verse 1

Arberry Prosperous are the believers
Maududi The believers have indeed attained true success:
Pickthall Successful indeed are the believers
Sahih Certainly will the believers have succeeded:
Yusuf Ali The believers must (eventually) win through,-

23.2

surah 23 - verse 2

Arberry who in their prayers are humble
Maududi those who, in their Prayers, humble themselves;
Pickthall Who are humble in their prayers,
Sahih They who are during their prayer humbly submissive
Yusuf Ali Those who humble themselves in their prayers;

23.3

surah 23 - verse 3

Arberry and from idle talk turn away
Maududi who avoid whatever is vain and frivolous;
Pickthall And who shun vain conversation,
Sahih And they who turn away from ill speech
Yusuf Ali Who avoid vain talk;

23.4

surah 23 - verse 4

Arberry and at almsgiving are active
Maududi who observe Zakah;
Pickthall And who are payers of the poor-due;
Sahih And they who are observant of zakah
Yusuf Ali Who are active in deeds of charity;

23.5

surah 23 - verse 5

Arberry and guard their private parts
Maududi who strictly guard their private parts
Pickthall And who guard their modesty -
Sahih And they who guard their private parts
Yusuf Ali Who abstain from sex,

23.6

surah 23 - verse 6

Arberry save from their wives and what their right hands own then being not blameworthy
Maududi save from their wives, or those whom their right hands possess; for with regard to them they are free from blame "
Pickthall Save from their wives or the (slaves) that their right hands possess, for then they are not blameworthy,
Sahih Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed -
Yusuf Ali Except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame,

23.7

surah 23 - verse 7

Arberry (but whosoever seeks after more than that, those are the transgressors)
Maududi As for those who seek beyond that, they are transgressors"
Pickthall But whoso craveth beyond that, such are transgressors -
Sahih But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors -
Yusuf Ali But those whose desires exceed those limits are transgressors;-

23.8

surah 23 - verse 8

Arberry and who preserve their trusts and their covenant
Maududi who are true to their trusts and their covenants,
Pickthall And who are shepherds of their pledge and their covenant,
Sahih And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive
Yusuf Ali Those who faithfully observe their trusts and their covenants;

23.9

surah 23 - verse 9

Arberry and who observe their prayers.
Maududi and who guard their Prayers.
Pickthall And who pay heed to their prayers.
Sahih And they who carefully maintain their prayers -
Yusuf Ali And who (strictly) guard their prayers;-

23.10

surah 23 - verse 10

Arberry Those are the inheritors
Maududi Such are the inheritors
Pickthall These are the heirs
Sahih Those are the inheritors
Yusuf Ali These will be the heirs,

23.11

surah 23 - verse 11

Arberry who shall inherit Paradise therein dwelling forever.
Maududi that shall inherit Paradise; and in it they shall abide for ever.
Pickthall Who will inherit paradise. There they will abide.
Sahih Who will inherit al-Firdaus. They will abide therein eternally.
Yusuf Ali Who will inherit Paradise: they will dwell therein (for ever).

23.12

surah 23 - verse 12

Arberry We created man of an extraction of clay,
Maududi We created man out of the extract of clay,
Pickthall Verily We created man from a product of wet earth;
Sahih And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay.
Yusuf Ali Man We did create from a quintessence (of clay);

23.13

surah 23 - verse 13

Arberry then We set him, a drop, in a receptacle secure,
Maududi then We made him into a drop of life-germ, then We placed it in a safe depository,
Pickthall Then placed him as a drop (of seed) in a safe lodging;
Sahih Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging.
Yusuf Ali Then We placed him as (a drop of) sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed;

23.14

surah 23 - verse 14

Arberry then We created of the drop a clot then We created of the clot a tissue then We created of the tissue bones then We garmented the bones in flesh; thereafter We produced him as another creature. So blessed be God, the fairest of creators!
Maududi then We made this drop into a clot, then We made the clot into a lump, then We made the lump into bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We caused it to grow into another creation. Thus Most Blessed is Allah, the Best of all those that create.
Pickthall Then fashioned We the drop a clot, then fashioned We the clot a little lump, then fashioned We the little lump bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, and then produced it as another creation. So blessed be Allah, the Best of creators!
Sahih Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.
Yusuf Ali Then We made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood; then of that clot We made a (foetus) lump; then we made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh; then we developed out of it another creature. So blessed be Allah, the best to create!

23.15

surah 23 - verse 15

Arberry Then after that you shall surely die,
Maududi Thereafter you are destined to die,
Pickthall Then lo! after that ye surely die.
Sahih Then indeed, after that you are to die.
Yusuf Ali After that, at length ye will die

23.16

surah 23 - verse 16

translator's name verse
Arberry then on the Day of Resurrection you shall surely be raised up.
Maududi and then on the Day of Resurrection you shall certainly be raised up.
Pickthall Then lo! on the Day of Resurrection ye are raised (again).
Sahih Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, will be resurrected.
Yusuf Ali Again, on the Day of Judgment, will ye be raised up.

23.17

surah 23 - verse 17

Arberry And We created above you seven ways, and We were not heedless of creation.
Maududi We have indeed fashioned above you seven paths. Never were We unaware of the task of creation.
Pickthall And We have created above you seven paths, and We are never unmindful of creation.
Sahih And We have created above you seven layered heavens, and never have We been of [Our] creation unaware.
Yusuf Ali And We have made, above you, seven tracts; and We are never unmindful of (our) Creation.

23.18

surah 23 - verse 18

Arberry And We sent down out of heaven water in measure and lodged it in the earth; and We are able to take it away.
Maududi We sent down water from the sky in right measure, and caused it to stay in the earth, and We have the power to cause it to vanish (in the manner We please).
Pickthall And we send down from the sky water in measure, and We give it lodging in the earth, and lo! We are Able to withdraw it.
Sahih And We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are Able to take it away.
Yusuf Ali And We send down water from the sky according to (due) measure, and We cause it to soak in the soil; and We certainly are able to drain it off (with ease).

23.19

surah 23 - verse 19

Arberry Then We produced for you therewith gardens of palms and vines wherein are many fruits for you, and of them you eat,
Maududi Then through water We caused gardens of date-palms and vines to grow for you wherein you have an abundance of delicious fruits and from them you derive your livelihood.
Pickthall Then We produce for you therewith gardens of date-palms and grapes, wherein is much fruit for you and whereof ye eat;
Sahih And We brought forth for you thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines in which for you are abundant fruits and from which you eat.
Yusuf Ali With it We grow for you gardens of date-palms and vines: in them have ye abundant fruits: and of them ye eat (and have enjoyment),-

23.20

surah 23 - verse 20

Arberry and a tree issuing from the Mount of Sinai that bears oil and seasoning for all to eat.
Maududi And We also produced the tree which springs forth from Mount Sinai, containing oil and sauce for those that eat.
Pickthall And a tree that springeth forth from Mount Sinai that groweth oil and relish for the eaters.
Sahih And [We brought forth] a tree issuing from Mount Sinai which produces oil and food for those who eat.
Yusuf Ali Also a tree springing out of Mount Sinai, which produces oil, and relish for those who use it for food.
