Surah Al Muminoon (The Believers)

23.41

surah 23 - verse 41

Arberry And the Cry seized them justly, and We made them as scum; so away with the people of the evildoers!
Maududi Then a mighty blast quite justly overtook them, and We reduced them to a rubble. So away with the wrong-doing folk!
Pickthall So the (Awful) Cry overtook them rightfully, and We made them like as wreckage (that a torrent hurleth). A far removal for wrongdoing folk!
Sahih So the shriek seized them in truth, and We made them as [plant] stubble. Then away with the wrongdoing people.
Yusuf Ali Then the Blast overtook them with justice, and We made them as rubbish of dead leaves (floating on the stream of Time)! So away with the people who do wrong!

23.42

surah 23 - verse 42

Arberry Thereafter, after them, We produced other generations;
Maududi Then, after them, We brought forth other generations.
Pickthall Then after them We brought forth other generations.
Sahih Then We produced after them other generations.
Yusuf Ali Then We raised after them other generations.

23.43

surah 23 - verse 43

Arberry no nation outstrips its term, nor do they put it back.
Maududi No nation can outstrip its term, nor can it put it back.
Pickthall No nation can outstrip its term, nor yet postpone it.
Sahih No nation will precede its time [of termination], nor will they remain [thereafter].
Yusuf Ali No people can hasten their term, nor can they delay (it).

23.44

surah 23 - verse 44

Arberry Then sent We Our Messengers successively; whenever its Messenger came to a nation they cried him lies, so We caused some of them to follow others, and We made them as but tales; so away with a people who do not believe!
Maududi Then We sent Our Messengers in succession. Whenever a Messenger came to his people they rejected him, calling him a liar. Thereupon, We made each people to follow the other (to its doom), reducing them to mere tales (of the past). Scourged be the people who do not believe!
Pickthall Then We sent our messengers one after another. Whenever its messenger came unto a nation they denied him; so We caused them to follow one another (to disaster) and We made them bywords. A far removal for folk who believe not!
Sahih Then We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time there came to a nation its messenger, they denied him, so We made them follow one another [to destruction], and We made them narrations. So away with a people who do not believe.
Yusuf Ali Then sent We our messengers in succession: every time there came to a people their messenger, they accused him of falsehood: so We made them follow each other (in punishment): We made them as a tale (that is told): So away with a people that will not believe!

23.45

Arberry Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs and a manifest authority
Maududi Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our Signs and a clear authority
Pickthall Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our tokens and a clear warrant
Sahih Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs and a clear authority
Yusuf Ali Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron, with Our Signs and authority manifest,

23.46

surah 23 - verse 46

Arberry unto Pharaoh and his Council; but they waxed proud, and they were a lofty people,
Maududi to Pharaoh and to his chiefs, but they behaved superciliously and they were haughty.
Pickthall Unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they scorned (them) and they were despotic folk.
Sahih To Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were arrogant and were a haughty people.
Yusuf Ali To Pharaoh and his Chiefs: But these behaved insolently: they were an arrogant people.

23.47

surah 23 - verse 47

Arberry and they said, 'What, shall we believe two mortals like ourselves, whose people are our servants?'
Maududi They said: "Shall we put faith in two mortals like ourselves when their people are slaves to us?"
Pickthall And they said: Shall we put faith in two mortals like ourselves, and whose folk are servile unto us?
Sahih They said, "Should we believe two men like ourselves while their people are for us in servitude?"
Yusuf Ali They said: "Shall we believe in two men like ourselves? And their people are subject to us!"

23.48

surah 23 - verse 48

Arberry So they cried them lies, and they were among the destroyed.
Maududi So they rejected them, calling them liars, and they too eventually became of those that were destroyed.
Pickthall So they denied them, and became of those who were destroyed.
Sahih So they denied them and were of those destroyed.
Yusuf Ali So they accused them of falsehood, and they became of those who were destroyed.

23.49

surah 23 - verse 49

Arberry And We gave Moses the Book, that haply they would be guided;
Maududi And We gave Moses the Book that people might be guided by it.
Pickthall And We verily gave Moses the Scripture, that haply they might go aright.
Sahih And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture that perhaps they would be guided.
Yusuf Ali And We gave Moses the Book, in order that they might receive guidance.

23.50

surah 23 - verse 50

Arberry and We made Mary's son, and his mother, to be a sign, and gave them refuge upon a height, where was a hollow and a spring:
Maududi And We made Mary's son, and his mother, a Sign, and We gave them refuge on a lofty ground, a peaceful site with springs flowing in it.
Pickthall And We made the son of Mary and his mother a portent, and We gave them refuge on a height, a place of flocks and watersprings.
Sahih And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign and sheltered them within a high ground having level [areas] and flowing water.
Yusuf Ali And We made the son of Mary and his mother as a Sign: We gave them both shelter on high ground, affording rest and security and furnished with springs.

23.51

surah 23 - verse 51

Arberry 'O Messengers, eat of the good things and do righteousness; surely I know the things you do.
Maududi Messengers! Partake of the things that are clean, and act righteously. I know well all that you do.
Pickthall O ye messengers! Eat of the good things, and do right. Lo! I am Aware of what ye do.
Sahih [Allah said], "O messengers, eat from the good foods and work righteousness. Indeed, I, of what you do, am Knowing.
Yusuf Ali O ye messengers! enjoy (all) things good and pure, and work righteousness: for I am well-acquainted with (all) that ye do.

23.52

surah 23 - verse 52

Arberry Surely this community of yours is one community, and I am your Lord; so fear Me.'
Maududi This community of yours is one community, and I am your Lord; so hold Me alone in fear.
Pickthall And lo! this your religion is one religion and I am your Lord, so keep your duty unto Me.
Sahih And indeed this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so fear Me."
Yusuf Ali And verily this Brotherhood of yours is a single Brotherhood, and I am your Lord and Cherisher: therefore fear Me (and no other).

23.53

surah 23 - verse 53

Arberry But they split in their affair between them into sects, each party rejoicing in what is with them.
Maududi But people later cut up their religion into bits, each group rejoicing in what they have.
Pickthall But they (mankind) have broken their religion among them into sects, each group rejoicing in its tenets.
Sahih But the people divided their religion among them into sects - each faction, in what it has, rejoicing.
Yusuf Ali But people have cut off their affair (of unity), between them, into sects: each party rejoices in that which is with itself.

23.54

surah 23 - verse 54

Arberry So leave thou them in their perplexity for a time.
Maududi So leave them immersed in their heedlessness till an appointed time.
Pickthall So leave them in their error till a time.
Sahih So leave them in their confusion for a time.
Yusuf Ali But leave them in their confused ignorance for a time.

23.55

surah 23 - verse 55

Arberry What, do they think that We succour them with of wealth and children,
Maududi Do they fancy that Our continuing to give them wealth and children (means) that
Pickthall Think they that in the wealth and sons wherewith We provide them
Sahih Do they think that what We extend to them of wealth and children
Yusuf Ali Do they think that because We have granted them abundance of wealth and sons,

23.56

surah 23 - verse 56

Arberry We vie in good works for them? Nay, but they are not aware.
Maududi We are busy lavishing on them all kinds of good? Nay, they do not perceive the reality of the matter.
Pickthall We hasten unto them with good things? Nay, but they perceive not.
Sahih Is [because] We hasten for them good things? Rather, they do not perceive.
Yusuf Ali We would hasten them on in every good? Nay, they do not understand.

23.57

surah 23 - verse 57

Arberry Surely those who tremble in fear of their Lord
Maududi Surely those who stand in awe for fear of their Lord,
Pickthall Lo! those who go in awe for fear of their Lord.
Sahih Indeed, they who are apprehensive from fear of their Lord
Yusuf Ali Verily those who live in awe for fear of their Lord;

23.58

surah 23 - verse 58

Arberry and those who believe in the signs of their Lord
Maududi who have full faith in the Signs of their Lord;
Pickthall And those who believe in the revelations of their Lord,
Sahih And they who believe in the signs of their Lord
Yusuf Ali Those who believe in the Signs of their Lord;

23.59

surah 23 - verse 59

Arberry and those who associate naught with their Lord
Maududi who associate none with their Lord in His Divinity,
Pickthall And those who ascribe not partners unto their Lord,
Sahih And they who do not associate anything with their Lord
Yusuf Ali Those who join not (in worship) partners with their Lord;

23.60

surah 23 - verse 60

Arberry and those who give what they give, their hearts quaking that they are returning to their Lord --
Maududi who give, whatever they give in charity, with their hearts trembling at the thought that they are destined to return to their Lord;
Pickthall And those who give that which they give with hearts afraid because they are about to return unto their Lord,
Sahih And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord -
Yusuf Ali And those who dispense their charity with their hearts full of fear, because they will return to their Lord;-
