Surah Naziat (Those Who Tear Out)

79.21

surah 79 - verse 21

Arberry but he cried lies, and rebelled,
Maududi but he denied it as false and disobeyed,
Pickthall But he denied and disobeyed,
Sahih But Pharaoh denied and disobeyed.
Yusuf Ali But (Pharaoh) rejected it and disobeyed (guidance);

79.22

Arberry then he turned away hastily,
Maududi and then he turned back to have recourse to his craftiness,
Pickthall Then turned he away in haste,
Sahih Then he turned his back, striving.
Yusuf Ali Further, he turned his back, striving hard (against Allah).

79.23

Maududi and gathered his people and declared:
Pickthall Then gathered he and summoned
Sahih And he gathered [his people] and called out
Yusuf Ali Then he collected (his men) and made a proclamation,

79.24

surah 79 - verse 24

Arberry and proclaimed, and he said, 'I am your Lord, the Most High!'
Maududi “I am the supreme lord of you all.”
Pickthall And proclaimed: "I (Pharaoh) am your Lord the Highest."
Sahih And said, "I am your most exalted lord."
Yusuf Ali Saying, "I am your Lord, Most High".

79.25

surah 79 - verse 25

Arberry So God seized him with the chastisement of the Last World and the First.
Maududi Thereupon Allah seized him for the chastisement of the World to Come as well as of the present.
Pickthall So Allah seized him (and made him) an example for the after (life) and for the former.
Sahih So Allah seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first [transgression].
Yusuf Ali But Allah did punish him, (and made an) example of him, - in the Hereafter, as in this life.

79.26

surah 79 - verse 26

Arberry Surely in that is a lesson for him who fears!
Maududi Surely there is a great lesson in it for whoever would fear (Allah).
Pickthall Lo! herein is indeed a lesson for him who feareth.
Sahih Indeed in that is a warning for whoever would fear [Allah].
Yusuf Ali Verily in this is an instructive warning for whosoever feareth (Allah).

79.27

surah 79 - verse 27

Arberry What, are you stronger in constitution or the heaven He built?
Maududi Is it harder to create you or the heaven? But Allah built it,
Pickthall Are ye the harder to create, or is the heaven that He built?
Sahih Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? Allah constructed it.
Yusuf Ali What! Are ye the more difficult to create or the heaven (above)? (Allah) hath constructed it:

79.28

surah 79 - verse 28

Arberry He lifted up its vault, and levelled it,
Maududi and raised its vault high and proportioned it;
Pickthall He raised the height thereof and ordered it;
Sahih He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.
Yusuf Ali On high hath He raised its canopy, and He hath given it order and perfection.

79.29

surah 79 - verse 29

Arberry and darkened its night, and brought forth its forenoon;
Maududi and covered its night with darkness and brought forth from it its day;
Pickthall And He made dark the night thereof, and He brought forth the morn thereof.
Sahih And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness.
Yusuf Ali Its night doth He endow with darkness, and its splendour doth He bring out (with light).

79.30

surah 79 - verse 30

Arberry and the earth-after that He spread it out,
Maududi and thereafter spread out the earth,
Pickthall And after that He spread the earth,
Sahih And after that He spread the earth.
Yusuf Ali And the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse);

79.31

surah 79 - verse 31

Arberry therefrom brought forth its waters and its pastures,
Maududi and brought out of it its water and its pasture,
Pickthall And produced therefrom the water thereof and the pasture thereof,
Sahih He extracted from it its water and its pasture,
Yusuf Ali He draweth out therefrom its moisture and its pasture;

79.32

surah 79 - verse 32

Arberry and the mountains He set firm,
Maududi and firmly fixed in it mountains;
Pickthall And He made fast the hills,
Sahih And the mountains He set firmly
Yusuf Ali And the mountains hath He firmly fixed;-

79.33

surah 79 - verse 33

Arberry an enjoyment for you and your flocks.
Maududi all this as provision for you and your cattle.
Pickthall A provision for you and for your cattle.
Sahih As provision for you and your grazing livestock.
Yusuf Ali For use and convenience to you and your cattle.

79.34

surah 79 - verse 34

Arberry Then, when the Great Catastrophe comes
Maududi But when the great calamity will come about
Pickthall But when the great disaster cometh,
Sahih But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity -
Yusuf Ali Therefore, when there comes the great, overwhelming (Event),-

79.35

surah 79 - verse 35

Arberry upon the day when man shall remember what he has striven,
Maududi on the Day when man will recall all his strivings,
Pickthall The day when man will call to mind his (whole) endeavour,
Sahih The Day when man will remember that for which he strove,
Yusuf Ali The Day when man shall remember (all) that he strove for,

79.36

surah 79 - verse 36

Arberry and Hell is advanced for whoever sees,
Maududi and Hell will be brought in sight for anyone to see:
Pickthall And hell will stand forth visible to him who seeth,
Sahih And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see -
Yusuf Ali And Hell-Fire shall be placed in full view for (all) to see,-

79.37

surah 79 - verse 37

Arberry then as for him who was insolent
Maududi then he who transgressed
Pickthall Then, as for him who rebelled
Sahih So as for he who transgressed
Yusuf Ali Then, for such as had transgressed all bounds,

79.38

surah 79 - verse 38

Arberry and preferred the present life,
Maududi and preferred the life of this world,
Pickthall And chose the life of the world,
Sahih And preferred the life of the world,
Yusuf Ali And had preferred the life of this world,

79.39

surah 79 - verse 39

Arberry surely Hell shall be the refuge.
Maududi most surely his abode shall be Hell.
Pickthall Lo! hell will be his home.
Sahih Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge.
Yusuf Ali The Abode will be Hell-Fire;

79.40

surah 79 - verse 40

Arberry But as for him who feared the Station of his Lord and forbade the soul its caprice,
Maududi But he who feared to stand before his Lord, and restrained himself from evil desires,
Pickthall But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his soul from lust,
Sahih But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination,
Yusuf Ali And for such as had entertained the fear of standing before their Lord's (tribunal) and had restrained (their) soul from lower desires,
