Chapter 77

Surah Al Mursalat (The Winds Which Are Sent)

77.1

surah 77 - verse 1

Arberry By the loosed ones successively
Maududi By the (winds) sent forth in quick succession,
Pickthall By the emissary winds, (sent) one after another
Sahih By those [winds] sent forth in gusts
Yusuf Ali By the (Winds) sent forth one after another (to man's profit);

77.2

surah 77 - verse 2

Arberry storming tempestuously
Maududi which then blow tempestuously
Pickthall By the raging hurricanes,
Sahih And the winds that blow violently
Yusuf Ali Which then blow violently in tempestuous Gusts,

77.3

surah 77 - verse 3

Arberry by the scatterers scattering
Maududi and raise (clouds) and scatter them around,
Pickthall By those which cause earth's vegetation to revive;
Sahih And [by] the winds that spread [clouds]
Yusuf Ali And scatter (things) far and wide;

77.4

surah 77 - verse 4

Arberry and the severally severing
Maududi then winnow them thoroughly,
Pickthall By those who winnow with a winnowing,
Sahih And those [angels] who bring criterion
Yusuf Ali Then separate them, one from another,

77.5

surah 77 - verse 5

Arberry and those hurling a reminder
Maududi and then cast (Allah's) remembrance (in people's hearts),
Pickthall By those who bring down the Reminder,
Sahih And those [angels] who deliver a message
Yusuf Ali Then spread abroad a Message,

77.6

surah 77 - verse 6

Arberry excusing or warning,
Maududi to serve as an excuse or a warning.
Pickthall To excuse or to warn,
Sahih As justification or warning,
Yusuf Ali Whether of Justification or of Warning;-

77.7

surah 77 - verse 7

Arberry surely that which you are promised is about to fall!
Maududi Surely what you are promised shall come to pass.
Pickthall Surely that which ye are promised will befall.
Sahih Indeed, what you are promised is to occur.
Yusuf Ali Assuredly, what ye are promised must come to pass.

77.8

surah 77 - verse 8

Arberry When the stars shall be extinguished,
Maududi So when the stars are extinguished,
Pickthall So when the stars are put out,
Sahih So when the stars are obliterated
Yusuf Ali Then when the stars become dim;

77.9

surah 77 - verse 9

Arberry when heaven shall be split
Maududi and the sky is rent asunder,
Pickthall And when the sky is riven asunder,
Sahih And when the heaven is opened
Yusuf Ali When the heaven is cleft asunder;

77.10

surah 77 - verse 10

Arberry when the mountains shall be scattered
Maududi and the mountains are blown away,
Pickthall And when the mountains are blown away,
Sahih And when the mountains are blown away
Yusuf Ali When the mountains are scattered (to the winds) as dust;

77.11

surah 77 - verse 11

Arberry and when the Messengers' time is set,
Maududi and the appointed time to bring the Messengers together arrives, (then shall the promised event come to pass).
Pickthall And when the messengers are brought unto their time appointed -
Sahih And when the messengers' time has come...
Yusuf Ali And when the messengers are (all) appointed a time (to collect);-

77.12

surah 77 - verse 12

Arberry to what day shall they be delayed?
Maududi To which Day has this task been deferred?
Pickthall For what day is the time appointed?
Sahih For what Day was it postponed?
Yusuf Ali For what Day are these (portents) deferred?

77.13

surah 77 - verse 13

Arberry To the Day of Decision.
Maududi To the Day of Judgement.
Pickthall For the Day of Decision.
Sahih For the Day of Judgement.
Yusuf Ali For the Day of Sorting out.

77.14

surah 77 - verse 14

Arberry And what shall teach thee what is the Day of Decision?
Maududi What do you know what the Day of Judgement is?
Pickthall And what will convey unto thee what the Day of Decision is! -
Sahih And what can make you know what is the Day of Judgement?
Yusuf Ali And what will explain to thee what is the Day of Sorting out?

77.15

surah 77 - verse 15

Arberry Woe that day unto those who cry it lies!
Maududi Woe on that Day to those that give the lie to the Truth!
Pickthall Woe unto the repudiators on that day!
Sahih Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
Yusuf Ali Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!

77.16

surah 77 - verse 16

Arberry Did We not destroy the ancients,
Maududi Did We not destroy many a nation of the earlier times?
Pickthall Destroyed We not the former folk,
Sahih Did We not destroy the former peoples?
Yusuf Ali Did We not destroy the men of old (for their evil)?

77.17

surah 77 - verse 17

Arberry and then follow them with the later folk?
Maududi And We shall cause those of later times to follow them.
Pickthall Then caused the latter folk to follow after?
Sahih Then We will follow them with the later ones.
Yusuf Ali So shall We make later (generations) follow them.

77.18

surah 77 - verse 18

Arberry So We serve the sinners.
Maududi Thus do We deal with the guilty.
Pickthall Thus deal We ever with the guilty.
Sahih Thus do We deal with the criminals.
Yusuf Ali Thus do We deal with men of sin.

77.19

surah 77 - verse 19

Arberry Woe that day unto those who cry it lies!
Maududi Woe on that Day to those that give the lie to the Truth!
Pickthall Woe unto the repudiators on that day!
Sahih Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
Yusuf Ali Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!

77.20

surah 77 - verse 20

Arberry Did We not create you of a mean water,
Maududi Did We not create you of a mean fluid,
Pickthall Did We not create you from a base fluid
Sahih Did We not create you from a liquid disdained?
Yusuf Ali Have We not created you from a fluid (held) despicable?-
