Surah Al Waqia (The Inevitable Event)

56.1

surah 56 - verse 1

Arberry When the Terror descends
Maududi When the Event will come to pass
Pickthall When the event befalleth -
Sahih When the Occurrence occurs,
Yusuf Ali When the Event inevitable cometh to pass,

56.2

surah 56 - verse 2

Arberry (and none denies its descending)
Maududi – and then there will be no one to deny its occurrence –
Pickthall There is no denying that it will befall -
Sahih There is, at its occurrence, no denial.
Yusuf Ali Then will no (soul) entertain falsehood concerning its coming.

56.3

surah 56 - verse 3

Arberry abasing, exalting,
Maududi (a calamitous Event) that shall turn things upside down:
Pickthall Abasing (some), exalting (others);
Sahih It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].
Yusuf Ali (Many) will it bring low; (many) will it exalt;

56.4

Maududi when the earth will suddenly shake with a terrible shaking,
Pickthall When the earth is shaken with a shock
Sahih When the earth is shaken with convulsion
Yusuf Ali When the earth shall be shaken to its depths,

Arberry and the mountains crumbled
Maududi and the mountains will crumble
Pickthall And the hills are ground to powder
Sahih And the mountains are broken down, crumbling
Yusuf Ali And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms,

56.6

surah 56 - verse 6

Arberry and become a dust, scattered,
Maududi and will scatter abroad into fine dust.
Pickthall So that they become a scattered dust,
Sahih And become dust dispersing.
Yusuf Ali Becoming dust scattered abroad,

56.7

surah 56 - verse 7

Arberry and you shall be three bands --
Maududi You shall then become three groups.
Pickthall And ye will be three kinds:
Sahih And you become [of] three kinds:
Yusuf Ali And ye shall be sorted out into three classes.

56.8

Arberry Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!)
Maududi The People on the Right: and how fortunate will be the People on the Right!
Pickthall (First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?
Sahih Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?
Yusuf Ali Then (there will be) the Companions of the Right Hand;- What will be the Companions of the Right Hand?

56.9

Maududi And the People on the Left: and how miserable will be the People on the Left!
Pickthall And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand?
Sahih And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?
Yusuf Ali And the Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand?

56.10

surah 56 - verse 10

Arberry and the Outstrippers: the Outstrippers
Maududi As for the Foremost, they will be the foremost!
Pickthall And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race:
Sahih And the forerunners, the forerunners -
Yusuf Ali And those Foremost (in Faith) will be Foremost (in the Hereafter).

56.11

Arberry those are they brought nigh the Throne,
Maududi They shall be near-stationed (to their Lord),
Pickthall Those are they who will be brought nigh
Sahih Those are the ones brought near [to Allah]
Yusuf Ali These will be those Nearest to Allah:

Arberry upon close-wrought couches
Maududi They (will be seated) on gold-encrusted couches,
Pickthall On lined couches,
Sahih On thrones woven [with ornament],
Yusuf Ali (They will be) on Thrones encrusted (with gold and precious stones),

56.16

surah 56 - verse 16

Arberry reclining upon them, set face to face,
Maududi reclining on them, arrayed face to face;
Pickthall Reclining therein face to face.
Sahih Reclining on them, facing each other.
Yusuf Ali Reclining on them, facing each other.

56.17

Arberry immortal youths going round about them
Maududi immortal youths shall go about them
Pickthall There wait on them immortal youths
Sahih There will circulate among them young boys made eternal
Yusuf Ali Round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness),

56.18

surah 56 - verse 18

Arberry with goblets, and ewers, and a cup from a spring
Maududi with goblets and ewers and a cup filled with a drink drawn from a running spring,
Pickthall With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring
Sahih With vessels, pitchers and a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring -
Yusuf Ali With goblets, (shining) beakers, and cups (filled) out of clear-flowing fountains:

56.19

surah 56 - verse 19

Arberry (no brows throbbing, no intoxication)
Maududi a drink by which their minds will not be clouded nor will it cause drunkenness;
Pickthall Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness,
Sahih No headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated -
Yusuf Ali No after-ache will they receive therefrom, nor will they suffer intoxication:

Maududi they will also go about them with the fruits of which they may choose,
