Surah Al Waqia (The Inevitable Event)

56.81

surah 56 - verse 81

Arberry What, do you hold this discourse in disdain,
Maududi Do you, then, take this discourse in light esteem,
Pickthall Is it this Statement that ye scorn,
Sahih Then is it to this statement that you are indifferent
Yusuf Ali Is it such a Message that ye would hold in light esteem?

56.82

surah 56 - verse 82

Arberry and do you make it your living to cry lies?
Maududi and your portion in it is simply that you denounce it as false?
Pickthall And make denial thereof your livelihood?
Sahih And make [the thanks for] your provision that you deny [the Provider]?
Yusuf Ali And have ye made it your livelihood that ye should declare it false?

56.83

surah 56 - verse 83

Arberry Why, but when the soul leaps to the throat of the dying
Maududi Why, then, when the soul leaps up to the throat,
Pickthall Why, then, when (the soul) cometh up to the throat (of the dying)
Sahih Then why, when the soul at death reaches the throat
Yusuf Ali Then why do ye not (intervene) when (the soul of the dying man) reaches the throat,-

56.84

surah 56 - verse 84

Arberry and that hour you are watching
Maududi the while you are helplessly watching that he is on the verge of death,
Pickthall And ye are at that moment looking
Sahih And you are at that time looking on -
Yusuf Ali And ye the while (sit) looking on,-

56.85

surah 56 - verse 85

Arberry (And We are nigher him than you, but you do not see Us)
Maududi – at that moment when We are closer to him than you, although you do not see (Us)
Pickthall - And We are nearer unto him than ye are, but ye see not -
Sahih And Our angels are nearer to him than you, but you do not see -
Yusuf Ali But We are nearer to him than ye, and yet see not,-

56.86

surah 56 - verse 86

Arberry why, if you are not at Our disposal,
Maududi if you are not subject to anyone's authority,
Pickthall Why then, if ye are not in bondage (unto Us),
Sahih Then why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed,
Yusuf Ali Then why do ye not,- If you are exempt from (future) account,-

56.87

surah 56 - verse 87

Arberry do you not bring back his soul, if you speak truly?
Maududi why are you then not able to bring them back to life if you are truthful?
Pickthall Do ye not force it back, if ye are truthful?
Sahih Bring it back, if you should be truthful?
Yusuf Ali Call back the soul, if ye are true (in the claim of independence)?

56.88

surah 56 - verse 88

Arberry Then, if he be of those brought nigh the Throne,
Maududi So if he is one of those who are near-stationed (to Allah),
Pickthall Thus if he is of those brought nigh,
Sahih And if the deceased was of those brought near to Allah,
Yusuf Ali Thus, then, if he be of those Nearest to Allah,

56.89

surah 56 - verse 89

Arberry there shall be repose and ease, and a Garden of Delight;
Maududi then happiness and delight and Gardens of Bliss are his.
Pickthall Then breath of life, and plenty, and a Garden of delight.
Sahih Then [for him is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure.
Yusuf Ali (There is for him) Rest and Satisfaction, and a Garden of Delights.

56.90

surah 56 - verse 90

Arberry and if he be a Companion of the Right:
Maududi And if he is one of the People on the Right,
Pickthall And if he is of those on the right hand,
Sahih And if he was of the companions of the right,
Yusuf Ali And if he be of the Companions of the Right Hand,

56.91

surah 56 - verse 91

Arberry 'Peace be upon thee, Companion of the Right!'
Maududi he will be welcomed by the words: “Peace to you” from the People on the Right.
Pickthall Then (the greeting) "Peace be unto thee" from those on the right hand.
Sahih Then [the angels will say], "Peace for you; [you are] from the companions of the right."
Yusuf Ali (For him is the salutation), "Peace be unto thee", from the Companions of the Right Hand.

56.92

surah 56 - verse 92

Arberry But if he be of them that cried lies, and went astray,
Maududi And if he is one of those who give the lie (to this Message) and go astray,
Pickthall But if he is of the rejecters, the erring,
Sahih But if he was of the deniers [who were] astray,
Yusuf Ali And if he be of those who treat (Truth) as Falsehood, who go wrong,

56.93

surah 56 - verse 93

Arberry there shall be a hospitality of boiling water
Maududi then he will be served boiling water,
Pickthall Then the welcome will be boiling water
Sahih Then [for him is] accommodation of scalding water
Yusuf Ali For him is Entertainment with Boiling Water.

56.94

surah 56 - verse 94

Arberry and the roasting in Hell.
Maududi and will be scorched by the Fire.
Pickthall And roasting at hell-fire.
Sahih And burning in Hellfire
Yusuf Ali And burning in Hell-Fire.

56.95

surah 56 - verse 95

Arberry Surely this is the truth of certainty.
Maududi That indeed is the absolute truth.
Pickthall Lo! this is certain truth.
Sahih Indeed, this is the true certainty,
Yusuf Ali Verily, this is the Very Truth and Certainly.

56.96

surah 56 - verse 96

translator's name verse
Arberry Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty.
Maududi So glorify the name of your Great Lord.
Pickthall Therefor (O Muhammad) praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.
Sahih So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
Yusuf Ali So celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme.
