78.21

surah 78 - verse 21

Arberry Behold, Gehenna has become an ambush,
Maududi Surely the Hell is an ambush,
Pickthall Lo! hell lurketh in ambush,
Sahih Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait
Yusuf Ali Truly Hell is as a place of ambush,

78.22

surah 78 - verse 22

Arberry for the insolent a resort,
Maududi a resort for the rebellious;
Pickthall A home for the rebellious.
Sahih For the transgressors, a place of return,
Yusuf Ali For the transgressors a place of destination:

78.23

surah 78 - verse 23

Arberry therein to tarry for ages,
Maududi therein they shall abide for ages,
Pickthall They will abide therein for ages.
Sahih In which they will remain for ages [unending].
Yusuf Ali They will dwell therein for ages.

78.24

surah 78 - verse 24

Arberry tasting therein neither coolness nor any drink
Maududi they shall taste in it no coolness, nor any pleasant drink
Pickthall Therein taste they neither coolness nor (any) drink
Sahih They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink
Yusuf Ali Nothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink,

Arberry save boiling water and pus
Maududi save boiling water and wash of the wounds;
Pickthall Save boiling water and a paralysing cold:
Sahih Except scalding water and [foul] purulence -
Yusuf Ali Save a boiling fluid and a fluid, dark, murky, intensely cold,

Arberry for a suitable recompense.
Maududi a befitting recompense for their deeds.
Pickthall Reward proportioned (to their evil deeds).
Sahih An appropriate recompense.
Yusuf Ali A fitting recompense (for them).

78.27

surah 78 - verse 27

Arberry They indeed hoped not for a reckoning,
Maududi For indeed they did not look forward to any reckoning,
Pickthall For lo! they looked not for a reckoning;
Sahih Indeed, they were not expecting an account
Yusuf Ali For that they used not to fear any account (for their deeds),

78.28

surah 78 - verse 28

Arberry and they cried loud lies to Our signs;
Maududi and roundly denied Our Signs as false.
Pickthall They called Our revelations false with strong denial.
Sahih And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial.
Yusuf Ali But they (impudently) treated Our Signs as false.

78.29

surah 78 - verse 29

Arberry and everything We have numbered in a Book.
Maududi And everything have We recorded in a Book.
Pickthall Everything have We recorded in a Book.
Sahih But all things We have enumerated in writing.
Yusuf Ali And all things have We preserved on record.

78.30

surah 78 - verse 30

Arberry 'Taste! We shall increase you not save in chastisement.'
Maududi So taste (the fruit of your deeds). We shall only increase your torment.
Pickthall So taste (of that which ye have earned). No increase do We give you save of torment.
Sahih "So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."
Yusuf Ali "So taste ye (the fruits of your deeds); for no increase shall We grant you, except in Punishment."

78.31

surah 78 - verse 31

Arberry Surely for the godfearing awaits a place of security,
Maududi Surely the state of triumph awaits the God-fearing:
Pickthall Lo! for the duteous is achievement -
Sahih Indeed, for the righteous is attainment -
Yusuf Ali Verily for the Righteous there will be a fulfilment of (the heart's) desires;

78.32

Arberry gardens and vineyards
Maududi gardens and vineyards,
Pickthall Gardens enclosed and vineyards,
Sahih Gardens and grapevines
Yusuf Ali Gardens enclosed, and grapevines;

78.33

surah 78 - verse 33

Arberry and maidens with swelling breasts, like of age,
Maududi and youthful maidens of like age,
Pickthall And voluptuous women of equal age;
Sahih And full-breasted [companions] of equal age
Yusuf Ali And voluptuous women of equal age;

78.34

Arberry and a cup overflowing.
Maududi and an overflowing cup.
Pickthall And a full cup.
Sahih And a full cup.
Yusuf Ali And a cup full (to the brim).

78.35

surah 78 - verse 35

Arberry Therein they shall hear no idle talk, no cry of lies,
Maududi Therein they shall hear no idle talk, nor any falsehood;
Pickthall There hear they never vain discourse, nor lying -
Sahih No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -
Yusuf Ali No vanity shall they hear therein, nor Untruth:-

78.36

surah 78 - verse 36

Arberry for a recompense from thy Lord, a gift, a reckoning,
Maududi a recompense from your Lord and an ample reward
Pickthall Requital from thy Lord - a gift in payment -
Sahih [As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account,
Yusuf Ali Recompense from thy Lord, a gift, (amply) sufficient,

78.37

surah 78 - verse 37

Arberry Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is, the All-merciful of whom they have no power to speak.
Maududi from the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of that which is between them; the Most Merciful Lord before Whom none dare utter a word.
Pickthall Lord of the heavens and the earth, and (all) that is between them, the Beneficent; with Whom none can converse.
Sahih [From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech.
Yusuf Ali (From) the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all between, (Allah) Most Gracious: None shall have power to argue with Him.

78.38

surah 78 - verse 38

Arberry Upon the day when the Spirit and the angels stand in ranks they shall speak not, save him to whom the All-merciful has given leave, and who speaks aright.
Maududi The Day when the Spirit and the angels are ranged row on row. None shall speak save he whom the Merciful Lord will permit; and he too will speak what is right.
Pickthall On the day when the angels and the Spirit stand arrayed, they speak not, saving him whom the Beneficent alloweth and who speaketh right.
Sahih The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.
Yusuf Ali The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand forth in ranks, none shall speak except any who is permitted by (Allah) Most Gracious, and He will say what is right.

78.39

surah 78 - verse 39

Arberry That is the true day; so whosoever wills takes unto his Lord a resort.
Maududi That Day is sure to come. So let him who will seek a resort with his Lord.
Pickthall That is the True Day. So whoso will should seek recourse unto his Lord.
Sahih That is the True Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return.
Yusuf Ali That Day will be the sure Reality: Therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) return to his Lord!

78.40

surah 78 - verse 40

Arberry Lo, We have warned you of a nigh chastisement, upon the day when a man shall behold what his hands have forwarded, and the unbeliever shall say, 'O would that I were dust!'
Maududi Lo! We warn you of a chastisement near at hand; the Day when a man will look on what his own hands have sent forth, and the unbelievers shall say: “Oh would that I were utter dust.”
Pickthall Lo! We warn you of a doom at hand, a day whereon a man will look on that which his own hands have sent before, and the disbeliever will cry: "Would that I were dust!"
Sahih Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"
Yusuf Ali Verily, We have warned you of a Penalty near, the Day when man will see (the deeds) which his hands have sent forth, and the Unbeliever will say, "Woe unto me! Would that I were (metre) dust!"
