Surah Al Insan (Man), also known as Surah Ad Dahr (Time)

76.1

surah 76 - verse 1

Arberry Has there come on man a while of time when he was a thing unremembered?
Maududi Was there a period of time when man was not even worthy of a mention?
Pickthall Hath there come upon man (ever) any period of time in which he was a thing unremembered?
Sahih Has there [not] come upon man a period of time when he was not a thing [even] mentioned?
Yusuf Ali Has there not been over Man a long period of Time, when he was nothing - (not even) mentioned?

76.2

surah 76 - verse 2

Arberry We created man of a sperm-drop, a mingling, and We made him hearing, seeing.
Maududi Verily We created man out of a drop of intermingled sperm so that We might try him, and We therefore endowed him with hearing and sight.
Pickthall Lo! We create man from a drop of thickened fluid to test him; so We make him hearing, knowing.
Sahih Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing.
Yusuf Ali Verily We created Man from a drop of mingled sperm, in order to try him: So We gave him (the gifts), of Hearing and Sight.

76.3

surah 76 - verse 3

Arberry Surely We guided him upon the way whether he be thankful or unthankful.
Maududi Surely We showed him the Right Path, regardless of whether he chooses to be thankful or unthankful (to his Lord).
Pickthall Lo! We have shown him the way, whether he be grateful or disbelieving.
Sahih Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.
Yusuf Ali We showed him the Way: whether he be grateful or ungrateful (rests on his will).

76.4

surah 76 - verse 4

Arberry Surely We have prepared for the unbelievers chains, fetters, and a Blaze.
Maududi For the unbelievers, We have kept ready chains and fetters and a Blazing Fire.
Pickthall Lo! We have prepared for disbelievers manacles and carcans and a raging fire.
Sahih Indeed, We have prepared for the disbelievers chains and shackles and a blaze.
Yusuf Ali For the Rejecters we have prepared chains, yokes, and a blazing Fire.

76.5

surah 76 - verse 5

Arberry Surely the pious shall drink of a cup whose mixture is camphor,
Maududi The virtuous shall drink from a cup tempered with camphor water.
Pickthall Lo! the righteous shall drink of a cup whereof the mixture is of Kafur,
Sahih Indeed, the righteous will drink from a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of Kafur,
Yusuf Ali As to the Righteous, they shall drink of a Cup (of Wine) mixed with Kafur,-

76.6

surah 76 - verse 6

Arberry a fountain whereat drink the servants of God, making it to gush forth plenteously.
Maududi This will be a gushing spring wherefrom Allah's servants shall drink wine, a spring from which they will take out channels wherever they wish.
Pickthall A spring wherefrom the slaves of Allah drink, making it gush forth abundantly,
Sahih A spring of which the [righteous] servants of Allah will drink; they will make it gush forth in force [and abundance].
Yusuf Ali A Fountain where the Devotees of Allah do drink, making it flow in unstinted abundance.

76.7

surah 76 - verse 7

Arberry They fulfil their vows, and fear a day whose evil is upon the wing;
Maududi These will be the ones who fulfil their vows and dread the Day whose woe shall be spread far and wide;
Pickthall (Because) they perform the vow and fear a day whereof the evil is wide-spreading,
Sahih They [are those who] fulfill [their] vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread.
Yusuf Ali They perform (their) vows, and they fear a Day whose evil flies far and wide.

76.8

surah 76 - verse 8

Arberry they give food, for the love of Him, to the needy, the orphan, the captive:
Maududi those who, for the love of Him, feed the needy, and the orphan, and the captive,
Pickthall And feed with food the needy wretch, the orphan and the prisoner, for love of Him,
Sahih And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive,
Yusuf Ali And they feed, for the love of Allah, the indigent, the orphan, and the captive,-

76.9

surah 76 - verse 9

Arberry 'We feed you only for the Face of God; we desire no recompense from you, no thankfulness;
Maududi (saying): “We feed you only for Allah's sake; we do not seek of you any recompense or thanks,
Pickthall (Saying): We feed you, for the sake of Allah only. We wish for no reward nor thanks from you;
Sahih [Saying], "We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.
Yusuf Ali (Saying),"We feed you for the sake of Allah alone: no reward do we desire from you, nor thanks.

76.10

surah 76 - verse 10

Arberry for we fear from our Lord a frowning day, inauspicious.
Maududi we fear from our Lord a Day that shall be long and distressful.”
Pickthall Lo! we fear from our Lord a day of frowning and of fate.
Sahih Indeed, We fear from our Lord a Day austere and distressful."
Yusuf Ali "We only fear a Day of distressful Wrath from the side of our Lord."

76.11

surah 76 - verse 11

Arberry So God has guarded them from the evil of that day, and has procured them radiancy and gladness,
Maududi So Allah shall guard them against the woe of that Day, and will procure them freshness and joy,
Pickthall Therefor Allah hath warded off from them the evil of that day, and hath made them find brightness and joy;
Sahih So Allah will protect them from the evil of that Day and give them radiance and happiness
Yusuf Ali But Allah will deliver them from the evil of that Day, and will shed over them a Light of Beauty and (blissful) Joy.

76.12

surah 76 - verse 12

Arberry and recompensed them for their patience with a Garden, and silk;
Maududi and will reward them for their steadfastness with Paradise and robes of silk.
Pickthall And hath awarded them for all that they endured, a Garden and silk attire;
Sahih And will reward them for what they patiently endured [with] a garden [in Paradise] and silk [garments].
Yusuf Ali And because they were patient and constant, He will reward them with a Garden and (garments of) silk.

76.13

surah 76 - verse 13

Arberry therein they shall recline upon couches, therein they shall see neither sun nor bitter cold;
Maududi There they will recline on elevated couches and will be subjected neither to the burning heat of the sun nor to bitter cold.
Pickthall Reclining therein upon couches, they will find there neither (heat of) a sun nor bitter cold.
Sahih [They will be] reclining therein on adorned couches. They will not see therein any [burning] sun or [freezing] cold.
Yusuf Ali Reclining in the (Garden) on raised thrones, they will see there neither the sun's (excessive heat) nor (the moon's) excessive cold.

76.14

surah 76 - verse 14

Arberry near them shall be its shades, and its clusters hung meekly down,
Maududi The shades of Paradise will bend over them, and its fruits will be brought within their easy reach;
Pickthall The shade thereof is close upon them and the clustered fruits thereof bow down.
Sahih And near above them are its shades, and its [fruit] to be picked will be lowered in compliance.
Yusuf Ali And the shades of the (Garden) will come low over them, and the bunches (of fruit), there, will hang low in humility.

76.15

surah 76 - verse 15

Arberry and there shall be passed around them vessels of silver, and goblets of crystal,
Maududi and there shall be passed around them vessels of silver and goblets of crystal,
Pickthall Goblets of silver are brought round for them, and beakers (as) of glass
Sahih And there will be circulated among them vessels of silver and cups having been [created] clear [as glass],
Yusuf Ali And amongst them will be passed round vessels of silver and goblets of crystal,-

76.16

surah 76 - verse 16

Arberry crystal of silver that they have measured -- very exactly.
Maududi goblets bright as crystal but made of silver, filled to exact measure.
Pickthall (Bright as) glass but (made) of silver, which they (themselves) have measured to the measure (of their deeds).
Sahih Clear glasses [made] from silver of which they have determined the measure.
Yusuf Ali Crystal-clear, made of silver: they will determine the measure thereof (according to their wishes).

76.17

surah 76 - verse 17

Arberry And therein they shall be given to drink a cup whose mixture is ginger,
Maududi Therein they shall be served a cup flavoured with ginger,
Pickthall There are they watered with a cup whereof the mixture is of Zanjabil,
Sahih And they will be given to drink a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of ginger
Yusuf Ali And they will be given to drink there of a Cup (of Wine) mixed with Zanjabil,-

76.18

surah 76 - verse 18

Arberry therein a fountain whose name is called Salsabil.
Maududi drawn from a spring (in Paradise) called Salsabil.
Pickthall (The water of) a spring therein, named Salsabil.
Sahih [From] a fountain within Paradise named Salsabeel.
Yusuf Ali A fountain there, called Salsabil.

76.19

surah 76 - verse 19

Arberry Immortal youths shall go about them; when thou seest them, thou supposest them scattered pearls,
Maududi There boys of everlasting youth shall go about attending them: when you see them, you would think that they are scattered pearls.
Pickthall There wait on them immortal youths, whom, when thou seest, thou wouldst take for scattered pearls.
Sahih There will circulate among them young boys made eternal. When you see them, you would think them [as beautiful as] scattered pearls.
Yusuf Ali And round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness): If thou seest them, thou wouldst think them scattered Pearls.

76.20

surah 76 - verse 20

Arberry when thou seest them then thou seest bliss and a great kingdom.
Maududi Whitherto you look around, you will see an abundance of bliss and the glories of a great kingdom.
Pickthall When thou seest, thou wilt see there bliss and high estate.
Sahih And when you look there [in Paradise], you will see pleasure and great dominion.
Yusuf Ali And when thou lookest, it is there thou wilt see a Bliss and a Realm Magnificent.
