Surah Al Qiyama (The Resurrection)

75.1

surah 75 - verse 1

Arberry No! I swear by the Day of Resurrection.
Maududi Nay, I swear by the Day of Resurrection;
Pickthall Nay, I swear by the Day of Resurrection;
Sahih I swear by the Day of Resurrection
Yusuf Ali I do call to witness the Resurrection Day;

75.10

surah 75 - verse 10

Arberry upon that day man shall say, 'Whither to flee?'
Maududi on that Day will man say: “Whither the refuge?”
Pickthall On that day man will cry: Whither to flee!
Sahih Man will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?"
Yusuf Ali That Day will Man say: "Where is the refuge?"

75.11

surah 75 - verse 11

Arberry No indeed; not a refuge!
Maududi No, there is no refuge.
Pickthall Alas! No refuge!
Sahih No! There is no refuge.
Yusuf Ali By no means! No place of safety!

75.12

surah 75 - verse 12

translator's name verse
Arberry Upon that day the recourse shall be to thy Lord.
Maududi With your Lord alone will be the retreat that Day.
Pickthall Unto thy Lord is the recourse that day.
Sahih To your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence.
Yusuf Ali Before thy Lord (alone), that Day will be the place of rest.

75.13

surah 75 - verse 13

Arberry Upon that day man shall be told his former deeds and his latter;
Maududi On that Day will man be apprised of his deeds, both the earlier and the later.
Pickthall On that day man is told the tale of that which he hath sent before and left behind.
Sahih Man will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead and kept back.
Yusuf Ali That Day will Man be told (all) that he put forward, and all that he put back.

75.14

surah 75 - verse 14

Arberry nay, man shall be a clear proof against himself,
Maududi But lo, man is well aware of himself,
Pickthall Oh, but man is a telling witness against himself,
Sahih Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness,
Yusuf Ali Nay, man will be evidence against himself,

75.15

surah 75 - verse 15

Arberry even though he offer his excuses.
Maududi even though he might make up excuses.
Pickthall Although he tender his excuses.
Sahih Even if he presents his excuses.
Yusuf Ali Even though he were to put up his excuses.

75.16

surah 75 - verse 16

Arberry Move not thy tongue with it to hasten it;
Maududi (O Prophet), do not stir your tongue hastily (to commit the Revelation to memory).
Pickthall Stir not thy tongue herewith to hasten it.
Sahih Move not your tongue with it, [O Muhammad], to hasten with recitation of the Qur'an.
Yusuf Ali Move not thy tongue concerning the (Qur'an) to make haste therewith.

75.17

surah 75 - verse 17

Arberry Ours it is to gather it, and to recite it.
Maududi Surely it is for Us to have you commit it to memory and to recite it.
Pickthall Lo! upon Us (resteth) the putting together thereof and the reading thereof.
Sahih Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation.
Yusuf Ali It is for Us to collect it and to promulgate it:

75.18

surah 75 - verse 18

Arberry So, when We recite it, follow thou its recitation.
Maududi And so when We recite it, follow its recitation attentively;
Pickthall And when We read it, follow thou the reading;
Sahih So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation.
Yusuf Ali But when We have promulgated it, follow thou its recital (as promulgated):

75.19

surah 75 - verse 19

Arberry Then Ours it is to explain it.
Maududi then it will be for Us to explain it.
Pickthall Then lo! upon Us (resteth) the explanation thereof.
Sahih Then upon Us is its clarification [to you].
Yusuf Ali Nay more, it is for Us to explain it (and make it clear):

75.2

surah 75 - verse 2

Arberry No! I swear by the reproachful soul.
Maududi and nay, I swear by the self-reproaching soul!
Pickthall Nay, I swear by the accusing soul (that this Scripture is true).
Sahih And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection].
Yusuf Ali And I do call to witness the self-reproaching spirit: (Eschew Evil).

75.20

surah 75 - verse 20

Arberry No indeed; but you love the hasty world,
Maududi Nay; the truth is that you love ardently (the good of this world) that can be obtained hastily,
Pickthall Nay, but ye do love the fleeting Now
Sahih No! But you love the immediate
Yusuf Ali Nay, (ye men!) but ye love the fleeting life,

75.21

surah 75 - verse 21

Arberry and leave be the Hereafter.
Maududi and are oblivious of the Hereafter.
Pickthall And neglect the Hereafter.
Sahih And leave the Hereafter.
Yusuf Ali And leave alone the Hereafter.

75.22

surah 75 - verse 22

Arberry Upon that day faces shall be radiant,
Maududi Some faces on that Day will be fresh and resplendent,
Pickthall That day will faces be resplendent,
Sahih [Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant,
Yusuf Ali Some faces, that Day, will beam (in brightness and beauty);-

75.23

surah 75 - verse 23

Arberry gazing upon their Lord;
Maududi and will be looking towards their Lord;
Pickthall Looking toward their Lord;
Sahih Looking at their Lord.
Yusuf Ali Looking towards their Lord;

75.24

surah 75 - verse 24

Arberry and upon that day faces shall be scowling,
Maududi and some faces on that Day will be gloomy,
Pickthall And that day will other faces be despondent,
Sahih And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted,
Yusuf Ali And some faces, that Day, will be sad and dismal,

75.25

surah 75 - verse 25

Arberry thou mightest think the Calamity has been wreaked on them.
Maududi believing that a crushing calamity is about to strike them.
Pickthall Thou wilt know that some great disaster is about to fall on them.
Sahih Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking.
Yusuf Ali In the thought that some back-breaking calamity was about to be inflicted on them;

75.26

surah 75 - verse 26

Arberry No indeed; when it reaches the clavicles
Maududi Nay; when a man's soul reaches up to the throat,
Pickthall Nay, but when the life cometh up to the throat
Sahih No! When the soul has reached the collar bones
Yusuf Ali Yea, when (the soul) reaches to the collar-bone (in its exit),

75.27

surah 75 - verse 27

Arberry and it is said, 'Who is an enchanter?'
Maududi and it is said: “Is there any enchanter who can step forward and help (by his chanting)?”
Pickthall And men say: Where is the wizard (who can save him now)?
Sahih And it is said, "Who will cure [him]?"
Yusuf Ali And there will be a cry, "Who is a magician (to restore him)?"
