Surah Naziat (Those Who Tear Out)

79.1

surah 79 - verse 1

Arberry By those that pluck out vehemently
Maududi By those (angels) that pluck out the soul from depths,
Pickthall By those who drag forth to destruction,
Sahih By those [angels] who extract with violence
Yusuf Ali By the (angels) who tear out (the souls of the wicked) with violence;

79.2

surah 79 - verse 2

Arberry and those that draw out violently,
Maududi and gently take it away;
Pickthall By the meteors rushing,
Sahih And [by] those who remove with ease
Yusuf Ali By those who gently draw out (the souls of the blessed);

79.3

surah 79 - verse 3

Arberry by those that swim serenely
Maududi and by those that speedily glide along (the cosmos),
Pickthall By the lone stars floating,
Sahih And [by] those who glide [as if] swimming
Yusuf Ali And by those who glide along (on errands of mercy),

79.4

surah 79 - verse 4

Arberry and those that outstrip suddenly
Maududi and vie with the others (in carrying out their Lord's behests);
Pickthall By the angels hastening,
Sahih And those who race each other in a race
Yusuf Ali Then press forward as in a race,

79.5

surah 79 - verse 5

Arberry by those that direct an affair!
Maududi and then manage the affairs of the Universe (according to their Lord's commands).
Pickthall And those who govern the event,
Sahih And those who arrange [each] matter,
Yusuf Ali Then arrange to do (the Commands of their Lord),

79.6

surah 79 - verse 6

Arberry Upon the day when the first blast shivers
Maududi The Day when the quaking will cause a violent convulsion,
Pickthall On the day when the first trump resoundeth.
Sahih On the Day the blast [of the Horn] will convulse [creation],
Yusuf Ali One Day everything that can be in commotion will be in violent commotion,

79.7

surah 79 - verse 7

Arberry and the second blast follows it,
Maududi and will be followed by another quaking.
Pickthall And the second followeth it,
Sahih There will follow it the subsequent [one].
Yusuf Ali Followed by oft-repeated (commotions):

79.8

surah 79 - verse 8

Arberry hearts upon that day shall be athrob
Maududi On that Day some hearts shall tremble (with fright),
Pickthall On that day hearts beat painfully
Sahih Hearts, that Day, will tremble,
Yusuf Ali Hearts that Day will be in agitation;

79.9

surah 79 - verse 9

Arberry and their eyes shall be humbled.
Maududi and their eyes shall be downcast with dread.
Pickthall While eyes are downcast
Sahih Their eyes humbled.
Yusuf Ali Cast down will be (their owners') eyes.

79.10

surah 79 - verse 10

Arberry They shall say, 'What, are we being restored as we were before?
Maududi They say: “Shall we indeed be restored to life,
Pickthall (Now) they are saying: Shall we really be restored to our first state
Sahih They are [presently] saying, "Will we indeed be returned to [our] former state [of life]?
Yusuf Ali They say (now): "What! shall we indeed be returned to (our) former state?

79.11

surah 79 - verse 11

Arberry What, when we are bones old and wasted?'
Maududi even after we have been reduced to bones, hollow and rotten?”
Pickthall Even after we are crumbled bones?
Sahih Even if we should be decayed bones?
Yusuf Ali "What! - when we shall have become rotten bones?"

79.12

surah 79 - verse 12

Arberry They shall say, 'That then were a losing return!'
Maududi They say: “That will then be a return with a great loss!”
Pickthall They say: Then that would be a vain proceeding.
Sahih They say, "That, then, would be a losing return."
Yusuf Ali They say: "It would, in that case, be a return with loss!"

79.13

surah 79 - verse 13

Arberry But it shall be only a single scare,
Maududi Surely they will need no more than a single stern blast,
Pickthall Surely it will need but one shout,
Sahih Indeed, it will be but one shout,
Yusuf Ali But verily, it will be but a single (Compelling) Cry,

79.14

surah 79 - verse 14

Arberry and behold, they are awakened.
Maududi and lo, they will all be in the open plain.
Pickthall And lo! they will be awakened.
Sahih And suddenly they will be [alert] upon the earth's surface.
Yusuf Ali When, behold, they will be in the (full) awakening (to Judgment).

79.15

surah 79 - verse 15

Arberry Hast thou received the story of Moses?
Maududi Has Moses' story reached you?
Pickthall Hath there come unto thee the history of Moses?
Sahih Has there reached you the story of Moses? -
Yusuf Ali Has the story of Moses reached thee?

79.16

surah 79 - verse 16

Arberry When his Lord called to him in the holy valley, Towa:
Maududi When his Lord called him in the sacred valley of Tuwa,
Pickthall How his Lord called him in the holy vale of Tuwa,
Sahih When his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa,
Yusuf Ali Behold, thy Lord did call to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa:-

79.17

surah 79 - verse 17

Arberry 'Go to Pharaoh; he has waxed insolent.
Maududi and directed him: “Go to Pharaoh, he has rebelled,
Pickthall (Saying:) Go thou unto Pharaoh - Lo! he hath rebelled -
Sahih "Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.
Yusuf Ali "Go thou to Pharaoh for he has indeed transgressed all bounds:

79.18

surah 79 - verse 18

Arberry And say, "Hast thou the will to purify thyself;
Maududi and say to him: 'Are you willing to be purified,
Pickthall And say (unto him): Hast thou (will) to grow (in grace)?
Sahih And say to him, 'Would you [be willing to] purify yourself
Yusuf Ali "And say to him, 'Wouldst thou that thou shouldst be purified (from sin)?-

79.19

surah 79 - verse 19

Arberry and that I should guide thee to thy Lord, then thou shalt fear?"'
Maududi that I may direct you to your Lord and then you hold Him in awe?'”
Pickthall Then I will guide thee to thy Lord and thou shalt fear (Him).
Sahih And let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]?'"
Yusuf Ali "'And that I guide thee to thy Lord, so thou shouldst fear Him?'"

79.20

surah 79 - verse 20

Arberry So he showed him the great sign,
Maududi Then Moses (went to Pharaoh and) showed him the Great Sign;
Pickthall And he showed him the tremendous token.
Sahih And he showed him the greatest sign,
Yusuf Ali Then did (Moses) show him the Great Sign.
