Chapter 74

Surah Al Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

74.1

surah 74 - verse 1

Arberry O thou shrouded in thy mantle,
Maududi O you enveloped in your cloak!
Pickthall O thou enveloped in thy cloak,
Sahih O you who covers himself [with a garment],
Yusuf Ali O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)!

74.2

surah 74 - verse 2

Arberry arise, and warn!
Maududi Arise, and warn,
Pickthall Arise and warn!
Sahih Arise and warn
Yusuf Ali Arise and deliver thy warning!

74.3

surah 74 - verse 3

Arberry Thy Lord magnify
Maududi and magnify the glory of your Lord,
Pickthall Thy Lord magnify,
Sahih And your Lord glorify
Yusuf Ali And thy Lord do thou magnify!

74.4

surah 74 - verse 4

Arberry thy robes purify
Maududi and purify your robes,
Pickthall Thy raiment purify,
Sahih And your clothing purify
Yusuf Ali And thy garments keep free from stain!

74.5

surah 74 - verse 5

Arberry and defilement flee!
Maududi and shun uncleanness,
Pickthall Pollution shun!
Sahih And uncleanliness avoid
Yusuf Ali And all abomination shun!

74.6

surah 74 - verse 6

Arberry Give not, thinking to gain greater
Maududi and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return,
Pickthall And show not favour, seeking wordly gain!
Sahih And do not confer favor to acquire more
Yusuf Ali Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)!

74.7

surah 74 - verse 7

Arberry and be patient unto thy Lord.
Maududi and persevere for your Lord's sake.
Pickthall For the sake of thy Lord, be patient!
Sahih But for your Lord be patient.
Yusuf Ali But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant!

74.8

surah 74 - verse 8

Arberry For when the Trump is sounded
Maududi When the Trumpet shall be sounded,
Pickthall For when the trumpet shall sound,
Sahih And when the trumpet is blown,
Yusuf Ali Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded,

74.9

surah 74 - verse 9

Arberry that day will be a harsh day,
Maududi that will surely be a hard day,
Pickthall Surely that day will be a day of anguish,
Sahih That Day will be a difficult day
Yusuf Ali That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,-

74.10

surah 74 - verse 10

Arberry for the unbelievers not easy.
Maududi not an easy day for the unbelievers.
Pickthall Not of ease, for disbelievers.
Sahih For the disbelievers - not easy.
Yusuf Ali Far from easy for those without Faith.

74.11

surah 74 - verse 11

Arberry Leave Me with him whom I created alone,
Maududi Leave Me with him whom I alone have created,
Pickthall Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely,
Sahih Leave Me with the one I created alone
Yusuf Ali Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!-

74.12

surah 74 - verse 12

Arberry and appointed for him ample wealth
Maududi whom I have endowed with abundant riches,
Pickthall And then bestowed upon him ample means,
Sahih And to whom I granted extensive wealth
Yusuf Ali To whom I granted resources in abundance,

74.13

surah 74 - verse 13

Arberry and sons standing before him,
Maududi and sons ever present with him,
Pickthall And sons abiding in his presence
Sahih And children present [with him]
Yusuf Ali And sons to be by his side!-

74.14

surah 74 - verse 14

Arberry and made all things smooth for him;
Maududi and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches),
Pickthall And made (life) smooth for him.
Sahih And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].
Yusuf Ali To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable!

74.15

surah 74 - verse 15

Arberry then he is eager that I should do more.
Maududi and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more.
Pickthall Yet he desireth that I should give more.
Sahih Then he desires that I should add more.
Yusuf Ali Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);-

74.16

surah 74 - verse 16

Arberry Nay! He is forward unto Our signs;
Maududi By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs.
Pickthall Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations.
Sahih No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.
Yusuf Ali By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory!

74.17

surah 74 - verse 17

Arberry and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent.
Maududi I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent.
Pickthall On him I shall impose a fearful doom.
Sahih I will cover him with arduous torment.
Yusuf Ali Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities!

74.18

surah 74 - verse 18

Arberry Lo! He reflected, and determined --
Maududi He reflected and then hatched a scheme.
Pickthall For lo! he did consider; then he planned -
Sahih Indeed, he thought and deliberated.
Yusuf Ali For he thought and he plotted;-

74.19

surah 74 - verse 19

Arberry death seize him, how he determined!
Maududi Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme?
Pickthall (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned!
Sahih So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.
Yusuf Ali And woe to him! How he plotted!-

74.20

surah 74 - verse 20

Arberry Again, death seize him, how he determined!
Maududi Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme?
Pickthall Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! -
Sahih Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.
Yusuf Ali Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!-
