Arberry in a parchment unrolled,
Maududi on fine parchment;
Pickthall On fine parchment unrolled,
Sahih In parchment spread open
Yusuf Ali In a Scroll unfolded;

52.4

surah 52 - verse 4

Arberry by the House inhabited
Maududi by the much-frequented House,
Pickthall And the House frequented,
Sahih And [by] the frequented House
Yusuf Ali By the much-frequented Fane;

52.5

surah 52 - verse 5

Arberry and the roof uplifted
Maududi by the elevated canopy;
Pickthall And the roof exalted,
Sahih And [by] the heaven raised high
Yusuf Ali By the Canopy Raised High;

52.6

surah 52 - verse 6

Arberry and the sea swarming,
Maududi and by the swelling sea:
Pickthall And the sea kept filled,
Sahih And [by] the sea filled [with fire],
Yusuf Ali And by the Ocean filled with Swell;-

52.7

surah 52 - verse 7

Arberry surely thy Lord's chastisement is about to fall;
Maududi verily your Lord's chastisement shall come to pass,
Pickthall Lo! the doom of thy Lord will surely come to pass;
Sahih Indeed, the punishment of your Lord will occur.
Yusuf Ali Verily, the Doom of thy Lord will indeed come to pass;-

52.8

surah 52 - verse 8

Arberry there is none to avert it.
Maududi none can avert that.
Pickthall There is none that can ward it off.
Sahih Of it there is no preventer.
Yusuf Ali There is none can avert it;-

52.9

surah 52 - verse 9

Arberry Upon the day when heaven spins dizzily
Maududi (It shall come to pass) on the Day when the heaven will convulse in a great convulsion,
Pickthall On the day when the heaven will heave with (awful) heaving,
Sahih On the Day the heaven will sway with circular motion
Yusuf Ali On the Day when the firmament will be in dreadful commotion.

52.10

surah 52 - verse 10

Arberry and the mountains are in motion,
Maududi and the mountains shall violently fly about.
Pickthall And the mountains move away with (awful) movement,
Sahih And the mountains will pass on, departing -
Yusuf Ali And the mountains will fly hither and thither.

52.11

surah 52 - verse 11

Arberry woe that day unto those that cry lies,
Maududi Woe, then, on that Day to those who give the lie (to this Message)
Pickthall Then woe that day unto the deniers
Sahih Then woe, that Day, to the deniers,
Yusuf Ali Then woe that Day to those that treat (Truth) as Falsehood;-

52.12

surah 52 - verse 12

Arberry such as play at plunging,
Maududi and amuse themselves with vain argumentation.
Pickthall Who play in talk of grave matters;
Sahih Who are in [empty] discourse amusing themselves.
Yusuf Ali That play (and paddle) in shallow trifles.

52.13

surah 52 - verse 13

Arberry the day when they shall be pitched into the fire of Gehenna:
Maududi On the Day when they shall be thrust into Hell with a violent thrust (and shall be told):
Pickthall The day when they are thrust with a (disdainful) thrust, into the fire of hell
Sahih The Day they are thrust toward the fire of Hell with a [violent] thrust, [its angels will say],
Yusuf Ali That Day shall they be thrust down to the Fire of Hell, irresistibly.

52.14

surah 52 - verse 14

Arberry 'This is the fire that you cried lies to!
Maududi “This is the Hell which you used to give the lie to.”
Pickthall (And it is said unto them): This is the Fire which ye were wont to deny.
Sahih "This is the Fire which you used to deny.
Yusuf Ali "This:, it will be said, "Is the Fire,- which ye were wont to deny!

52.15

surah 52 - verse 15

Arberry What, is this magic, or is it you that do not see?
Maududi Is this, then, any feat of magic or are you unable to see?
Pickthall Is this magic, or do ye not see?
Sahih Then is this magic, or do you not see?
Yusuf Ali "Is this then a fake, or is it ye that do not see?

52.16

surah 52 - verse 16

Arberry Roast in it! And bear you patiently, or bear not patiently, equal it is to you; you are only being recompensed for that you were working.'
Maududi Go now and burn in it. It is all the same whether you bear it patiently or do not bear it with patience. You are only being recompensed for your deeds.”
Pickthall Endure the heat thereof, and whether ye are patient of it or impatient of it is all one for you. Ye are only being paid for what ye used to do.
Sahih [Enter to] burn therein; then be patient or impatient - it is all the same for you. You are only being recompensed [for] what you used to do."
Yusuf Ali "Burn ye therein: the same is it to you whether ye bear it with patience, or not: Ye but receive the recompense of your (own) deeds."

52.17

surah 52 - verse 17

Arberry Surely the godfearing shall be in gardens and bliss,
Maududi Surely the God-fearing shall be in Gardens and bliss,
Pickthall Lo! those who kept their duty dwell in gardens and delight,
Sahih Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and pleasure,
Yusuf Ali As to the Righteous, they will be in Gardens, and in Happiness,-

52.18

surah 52 - verse 18

Arberry rejoicing in that their Lord has given them; and their Lord shall guard them against the chastisement of Hell.
Maududi enjoying what Allah will have endowed them with; and their Lord will have saved them from the torment of the Blazing Fire.
Pickthall Happy because of what their Lord hath given them, and (because) their Lord hath warded off from them the torment of hell-fire.
Sahih Enjoying what their Lord has given them, and their Lord protected them from the punishment of Hellfire.
Yusuf Ali Enjoying the (Bliss) which their Lord hath bestowed on them, and their Lord shall deliver them from the Penalty of the Fire.

52.19

surah 52 - verse 19

Arberry 'Eat and drink, with wholesome appetite, for that you were working.
Maududi (They will be told): “Eat and drink to your hearts' content as a reward for your deeds.”
Pickthall (And it is said unto them): Eat and drink in health (as a reward) for what ye used to do,
Sahih [They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do."
Yusuf Ali (To them will be said:) "Eat and drink ye, with profit and health, because of your (good) deeds."

52.20

surah 52 - verse 20

Arberry Reclining upon couches ranged in rows; and We shall espouse them to wide-eyed houris.
Maududi The God-fearing shall be reclining on couches facing each other, and We shall wed them to maidens with large, beautiful eyes.
Pickthall Reclining on ranged couches. And we wed them unto fair ones with wide, lovely eyes.
Sahih They will be reclining on thrones lined up, and We will marry them to fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes.
Yusuf Ali They will recline (with ease) on Thrones (of dignity) arranged in ranks; and We shall join them to Companions, with beautiful big and lustrous eyes.
