Surah Al-Masadd (The Flame)

111.1

surah 111 - verse 1

Arberry Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he!
Maududi Destroyed were the hands of Abu Lahab, and he lay utterly doomed.
Pickthall The power of Abu Lahab will perish, and he will perish.
Sahih May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he.
Yusuf Ali Perish the hands of the Father of Flame! Perish he!

111.2

surah 111 - verse 2

Arberry His wealth avails him not, neither what he has earned;
Maududi His wealth did not avail him, nor his acquisitions.
Pickthall His wealth and gains will not exempt him.
Sahih His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained.
Yusuf Ali No profit to him from all his wealth, and all his gains!

111.3

surah 111 - verse 3

Arberry he shall roast at a flaming fire
Maududi Surely, he will be cast into a Flaming Fire
Pickthall He will be plunged in flaming Fire,
Sahih He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame
Yusuf Ali Burnt soon will he be in a Fire of Blazing Flame!

111.4

surah 111 - verse 4

Arberry and his wife, the carrier of the firewood,
Maududi along with his wife, that carrier of slanderous tales;
Pickthall And his wife, the wood-carrier,
Sahih And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood.
Yusuf Ali His wife shall carry the (crackling) wood - As fuel!-

surah 111 - verse 5

Arberry upon her neck a rope of palm-fibre.
Maududi upon her neck shall be a rope of palm-fibre.
Pickthall Will have upon her neck a halter of palm-fibre.
Sahih Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber.
Yusuf Ali A twisted rope of palm-leaf fibre round her (own) neck!
