Surah Al Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

74.41

surah 74 - verse 41

Maududi about the guilty ones:
Pickthall Concerning the guilty:
Sahih About the criminals,
Yusuf Ali And (ask) of the Sinners:

74.42

surah 74 - verse 42

Arberry 'What thrusted you into Sakar?'
Maududi “What drove you to Hell?”
Pickthall What hath brought you to this burning?
Sahih [And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"
Yusuf Ali "What led you into Hell Fire?"

74.43

surah 74 - verse 43

Arberry They shall say, 'We were not of those who prayed, and
Maududi They will answer: “We were not among those who observed Prayer,
Pickthall They will answer: We were not of those who prayed
Sahih They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,
Yusuf Ali They will say: "We were not of those who prayed;

74.44

surah 74 - verse 44

Arberry we fed not the needy,
Maududi and we did not feed the poor,
Pickthall Nor did we feed the wretched.
Sahih Nor did we used to feed the poor.
Yusuf Ali "Nor were we of those who fed the indigent;

74.45

surah 74 - verse 45

Arberry and we plunged along with the plungers,
Maududi and we indulged in vain talk with those who indulged in vain talk,
Pickthall We used to wade (in vain dispute) with (all) waders,
Sahih And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],
Yusuf Ali "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers;

74.46

surah 74 - verse 46

Arberry and we cried lies to the Day of Doom,
Maududi and we gave the lie to the Day of Judgement
Pickthall And we used to deny the Day of Judgment,
Sahih And we used to deny the Day of Recompense
Yusuf Ali "And we used to deny the Day of Judgment,

74.47

surah 74 - verse 47

Arberry till the Certain came to us.' --
Maududi until the inevitable event overtook us.”
Pickthall Till the Inevitable came unto us.
Sahih Until there came to us the certainty."
Yusuf Ali "Until there came to us (the Hour) that is certain."

74.48

surah 74 - verse 48

Arberry Then the intercession of the intercessors shall not profit them.
Maududi The intercession of the intercessors shall then be of no avail to them.
Pickthall The mediation of no mediators will avail them then.
Sahih So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.
Yusuf Ali Then will no intercession of (any) intercessors profit them.

74.49

surah 74 - verse 49

Arberry What ails them, that they turn away from the Reminder,
Maududi What is the matter with people that they are turning away from this Exhortation,
Pickthall Why now turn they away from the Admonishment,
Sahih Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away
Yusuf Ali Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?-

Maududi as though they were frightened wild asses,
Pickthall As they were frightened asses
Sahih As if they were alarmed donkeys
Yusuf Ali As if they were affrighted asses,

74.51

surah 74 - verse 51

Arberry fleeing -- before a lion?
Maududi fleeing from a lion?
Pickthall Fleeing from a lion?
Sahih Fleeing from a lion?
Yusuf Ali Fleeing from a lion!

74.52

surah 74 - verse 52

Arberry Nay, every man of them desires to be -- given -- scrolls unrolled.
Maududi No indeed; each one of them desires that open letters be sent to each of them.
Pickthall Nay, but everyone of them desireth that he should be given open pages (from Allah).
Sahih Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about.
Yusuf Ali Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out!

74.53

surah 74 - verse 53

Arberry No indeed; but they do not fear the Hereafter.
Maududi No indeed; the truth is that they have no fear of the Hereafter.
Pickthall Nay, verily. They fear not the Hereafter.
Sahih No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.
Yusuf Ali By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter,

74.54

surah 74 - verse 54

Arberry No indeed; surely it is a Reminder;
Maududi Nay; this is an Exhortation.
Pickthall Nay, verily. Lo! this is an Admonishment.
Sahih No! Indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder
Yusuf Ali Nay, this surely is an admonition:

74.55

surah 74 - verse 55

Arberry so whoever wills shall remember it.
Maududi So, whoever wills may benefit from it.
Pickthall So whosoever will may heed.
Sahih Then whoever wills will remember it.
Yusuf Ali Let any who will, keep it in remembrance!

74.56

surah 74 - verse 56

Arberry And they will not remember, except that God wills; He is worthy to be feared, -- worthy to forgive.
Maududi But they will not benefit from it unless Allah Himself so wills. He is worthy to be feared; and He is worthy to forgive (those that fear Him).
Pickthall And they will not heed unless Allah willeth (it). He is the fount of fear. He is the fount of Mercy.
Sahih And they will not remember except that Allah wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.
Yusuf Ali But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness.
