Surah Adh Dhariyat (The Winds)

51.21

surah 51 - verse 21

Arberry and in your selves; what, do you not see?
Maududi and also in your own selves. Do you not see?
Pickthall And (also) in yourselves. Can ye then not see?
Sahih And in yourselves. Then will you not see?
Yusuf Ali As also in your own selves: Will ye not then see?

51.22

surah 51 - verse 22

Arberry And in heaven is your provision, and that you are promised.
Maududi And in heaven is your provision and also what you are being promised.
Pickthall And in the heaven is your providence and that which ye are promised;
Sahih And in the heaven is your provision and whatever you are promised.
Yusuf Ali And in heaven is your Sustenance, as (also) that which ye are promised.

51.23

surah 51 - verse 23

Arberry So by the Lord of heaven and earth, it is as surely true as that you have speech.
Maududi So, by the Lord of the heaven and the earth, this is certainly true, as true as the fact of your speaking.
Pickthall And by the Lord of the heavens and the earth, it is the truth, even as (it is true) that ye speak.
Sahih Then by the Lord of the heaven and earth, indeed, it is truth - just as [sure as] it is that you are speaking.
Yusuf Ali Then, by the Lord of heaven and earth, this is the very Truth, as much as the fact that ye can speak intelligently to each other.

51.24

surah 51 - verse 24

Arberry Hast thou received the story of the honoured guests of Abraham?
Maududi (O Prophet), did the story of Abraham's honoured guests reach you?
Pickthall Hath the story of Abraham's honoured guests reached thee (O Muhammad)?
Sahih Has there reached you the story of the honored guests of Abraham? -
Yusuf Ali Has the story reached thee, of the honoured guests of Abraham?

51.25

surah 51 - verse 25

Arberry When they entered unto him, saying 'Peace!' he said 'Peace! You are a people unknown to me.'
Maududi When they came to him, they said: “Peace”; he said: “Peace also be to you; (you seem to be) a group of strangers.”
Pickthall When they came in unto him and said: Peace! he answered, Peace! (and thought): Folk unknown (to me).
Sahih When they entered upon him and said, "[We greet you with] peace." He answered, "[And upon you] peace, [you are] a people unknown.
Yusuf Ali Behold, they entered his presence, and said: "Peace!" He said, "Peace!" (and thought, "These seem) unusual people."

51.26

surah 51 - verse 26

Arberry Then he turned to his household and brought a fattened calf,
Maududi Then he went back to his family and brought a fat roasted calf
Pickthall Then he went apart unto his housefolk so that they brought a fatted calf;
Sahih Then he went to his family and came with a fat [roasted] calf
Yusuf Ali Then he turned quickly to his household, brought out a fatted calf,

51.27

Arberry and he laid it before them saying, 'Will you not eat?'
Maududi and laid it before them, saying: “Will you not eat?”
Pickthall And he set it before them, saying: Will ye not eat?
Sahih And placed it near them; he said, "Will you not eat?"
Yusuf Ali And placed it before them.. he said, "Will ye not eat?"

51.28

surah 51 - verse 28

Arberry Then he conceived a fear of them. They said, 'Be not afraid!' And they gave him good tidings of a cunning boy.
Maududi Then he became afraid of them. They said: “Fear not,” and announced to him the good news of (the birth of) a boy endowed with knowledge.
Pickthall Then he conceived a fear of them. They said: Fear not! and gave him tidings of (the birth of) a wise son.
Sahih And he felt from them apprehension. They said, "Fear not," and gave him good tidings of a learned boy.
Yusuf Ali (When they did not eat), He conceived a fear of them. They said, "Fear not," and they gave him glad tidings of a son endowed with knowledge.

51.29

surah 51 - verse 29

Arberry Then came forward his wife, clamouring, and she smote her face, and said, 'An old woman, barren!'
Maududi So hearing his wife went forth shouting. She struck her face and exclaimed: “A barren old woman am I.”
Pickthall Then his wife came forward, making moan, and smote her face, and cried: A barren old woman!
Sahih And his wife approached with a cry [of alarm] and struck her face and said, "[I am] a barren old woman!"
Yusuf Ali But his wife came forward (laughing) aloud: she smote her forehead and said: "A barren old woman!"

51.30

surah 51 - verse 30

Arberry They said, 'So says thy Lord; He is the All-wise, the All-knowing.'
Maududi They said: “So has your Lord said (that you shall have a boy). Surely He is Most Wise, All-Knowing.”
Pickthall They said: Even so saith thy Lord. Lo! He is the Wise, the Knower.
Sahih They said, "Thus has said your Lord; indeed, He is the Wise, the Knowing."
Yusuf Ali They said, "Even so has thy Lord spoken: and He is full of Wisdom and Knowledge."

51.31

surah 51 - verse 31

Arberry Said he, 'And what is your business, envoys?'
Maududi Abraham said: “Envoys (of Allah), what is your errand?”
Pickthall (Abraham) said: And (afterward) what is your errand, O ye sent (from Allah)?
Sahih [Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"
Yusuf Ali (Abraham) said: "And what, O ye Messengers, is your errand (now)?"

51.32

surah 51 - verse 32

Arberry They said, 'We have been sent to a people of sinners,
Maududi They replied: “Behold, we have been sent to a wicked people
Pickthall They said: Lo! we are sent unto a guilty folk,
Sahih They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals
Yusuf Ali They said, "We have been sent to a people (deep) in sin;-

Arberry to loose upon them stones of clay
Maududi that we may unleash a shower of clay-stones
Pickthall That we may send upon them stones of clay,
Sahih To send down upon them stones of clay,
Yusuf Ali "To bring on, on them, (a shower of) stones of clay (brimstone),

51.34

surah 51 - verse 34

Arberry marked with thy Lord for the prodigal.
Maududi marked by your Lord upon those who go beyond the limits.”
Pickthall Marked by thy Lord for (the destruction of) the wanton.
Sahih Marked in the presence of your Lord for the transgressors."
Yusuf Ali "Marked as from thy Lord for those who trespass beyond bounds."

51.35

surah 51 - verse 35

Arberry So We brought forth such believers as were in it,
Maududi Then We evacuated there from all the believers
Pickthall Then we brought forth such believers as were there.
Sahih So We brought out whoever was in the cities of the believers.
Yusuf Ali Then We evacuated those of the Believers who were there,

51.36

surah 51 - verse 36

Arberry but We found not therein except one house of those that have surrendered themselves.
Maududi – and We did not find there any, apart from a single house of Muslims –
Pickthall But We found there but one house of those surrendered (to Allah).
Sahih And We found not within them other than a [single] house of Muslims.
Yusuf Ali But We found not there any just (Muslim) persons except in one house:

51.37

surah 51 - verse 37

Arberry And therein We left a sign to those who fear the painful chastisement.
Maududi and We left therein a Sign for those who fear the grievous chastisement.
Pickthall And We left behind therein a portent for those who fear a painful doom.
Sahih And We left therein a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.
Yusuf Ali And We left there a Sign for such as fear the Grievous Penalty.

51.38

surah 51 - verse 38

Arberry And also in Moses, when We sent him unto Pharaoh, with a clear authority,
Maududi There is also a Sign for you in the story of Moses when We sent him with a clear authority to Pharaoh.
Pickthall And in Moses (too, there is a portent) when We sent him unto Pharaoh with clear warrant,
Sahih And in Moses [was a sign], when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.
Yusuf Ali And in Moses (was another Sign): Behold, We sent him to Pharaoh, with authority manifest.

51.39

surah 51 - verse 39

Arberry but he turned his back, with his court, saying, 'A sorcerer, or a man possessed!'
Maududi But Pharaoh turned away, showing arrogance on account of his power, and said (about Moses): “He is either a sorcerer or a madman.”
Pickthall But he withdrew (confiding) in his might, and said: A wizard or a madman.
Sahih But he turned away with his supporters and said," A magician or a madman."
Yusuf Ali But (Pharaoh) turned back with his Chiefs, and said, "A sorcerer, or one possessed!"

51.40

surah 51 - verse 40

Arberry So We seized him and his hosts, and We cast them into the sea, and he blameworthy.
Maududi So We seized him and his hosts, and cast them into the sea. He became an object of much blame.
Pickthall So We seized him and his hosts and flung them in the sea, for he was reprobate.
Sahih So We took him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea, and he was blameworthy.
Yusuf Ali So We took him and his forces, and threw them into the sea; and his was the blame.
