surah 43 - verse 21

translator's name verse
Arberry Or did We bring them a Book aforetime to which they hold?
Maududi Or did We bestow upon them a Book before on whose authority they are holding on (to angel-worship)?
Pickthall Or have We given them any scripture before (this Qur'an) so that they are holding fast thereto?
Sahih Or have We given them a book before the Qur'an to which they are adhering?
Yusuf Ali What! have We given them a Book before this, to which they are holding fast?

43.22

surah 43 - verse 22

translator's name verse
Arberry Nay, but they say, 'We found our fathers upon a community, and we are guided upon their traces.'
Maududi Nay; they simply claim: “We found our forefathers on a way, and we continue to find guidance in their footsteps.”
Pickthall Nay, for they say only: Lo! we found our fathers following a religion, and we are guided by their footprints.
Sahih Rather, they say, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are in their footsteps [rightly] guided."
Yusuf Ali Nay! they say: "We found our fathers following a certain religion, and we do guide ourselves by their footsteps."

43.23

surah 43 - verse 23

translator's name verse
Arberry Even so We sent never before thee any warner into any city, except that its men who lived at ease said, 'We indeed found our fathers upon a community, and we are following upon their traces.'
Maududi And thus it is: whenever We sent any warner to a city its affluent ones said: “We found our forefathers on a way and we continue to follow in their footsteps.”
Pickthall And even so We sent not a warner before thee (Muhammad) into any township but its luxurious ones said: Lo! we found our fathers following a religion, and we are following their footprints.
Sahih And similarly, We did not send before you any warner into a city except that its affluent said, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are, in their footsteps, following."
Yusuf Ali Just in the same way, whenever We sent a Warner before thee to any people, the wealthy ones among them said: "We found our fathers following a certain religion, and we will certainly follow in their footsteps."

43.24

surah 43 - verse 24

translator's name verse
Arberry Say: 'What, though I should bring you a better guidance than you found your fathers upon?' They say, 'We disbelieve in that you were sent with.'
Maududi Each Prophet asked them: “Will you do so even if we were to show you a way better than the way of your forefathers?” They answered: “We disbelieve in the religion with which you have been sent.”
Pickthall (And the warner) said: What! Even though I bring you better guidance than that ye found your fathers following? They answered: Lo! in what ye bring we are disbelievers.
Sahih [Each warner] said, "Even if I brought you better guidance than that [religion] upon which you found your fathers?" They said, "Indeed we, in that with which you were sent, are disbelievers."
Yusuf Ali He said: "What! Even if I brought you better guidance than that which ye found your fathers following?" They said: "For us, we deny that ye (prophets) are sent (on a mission at all)."

43.25

surah 43 - verse 25

translator's name verse
Arberry So We took vengeance upon them; and behold how was the end of them that cried lies.
Maududi Then We exacted retribution from them. So do consider the end of those who gave the lie (to the Prophets).
Pickthall So We requited them. Then see the nature of the consequence for the rejecters!
Sahih So we took retribution from them; then see how was the end of the deniers.
Yusuf Ali So We exacted retribution from them: now see what was the end of those who rejected (Truth)!

43.26

Maududi Call to mind when Abraham said to his father and his people: “I totally disown all whom you serve
Pickthall And when Abraham said unto his father and his folk: Lo! I am innocent of what ye worship
Sahih And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said to his father and his people, "Indeed, I am disassociated from that which you worship
Yusuf Ali Behold! Abraham said to his father and his people: "I do indeed clear myself of what ye worship:

Arberry except Him who originated me; and He will guide me.
Maududi except the One Who created me; and, behold, it is He Who will direct me to the Right Way.”
Pickthall Save Him Who did create me, for He will surely guide me.
Sahih Except for He who created me; and indeed, He will guide me."
Yusuf Ali "(I worship) only Him Who made me, and He will certainly guide me."

43.28

surah 43 - verse 28

translator's name verse
Arberry And he made it a word enduring among his posterity; haply so they would return.
Maududi And Abraham left behind this word to endure among his posterity so that they may return to it.
Pickthall And he made it a word enduring among his seed, that haply they might return.
Sahih And he made it a word remaining among his descendants that they might return [to it].
Yusuf Ali And he left it as a Word to endure among those who came after him, that they may turn back (to Allah).

43.29

surah 43 - verse 29

translator's name verse
Arberry Nay, but I gave these and their fathers enjoyment of days, until the truth came unto them, and a manifest Messenger.
Maududi (Even when they began worshipping others than Allah We did not destroy them) but bestowed sustenance on them and on their forefathers until there came to them the Truth and a Messenger who clearly expounded things to them.
Pickthall Nay, but I let these and their fathers enjoy life (only) till there should come unto them the Truth and a messenger making plain.
Sahih However, I gave enjoyment to these [people of Makkah] and their fathers until there came to them the truth and a clear Messenger.
Yusuf Ali Yea, I have given the good things of this life to these (men) and their fathers, until the Truth has come to them, and a messenger making things clear.

43.30

surah 43 - verse 30

translator's name verse
Arberry And when the truth came to them, they said, 'This is a sorcery, and in it we are unbelievers.'
Maududi And when the Truth came to them they said: “This is just sorcery and we reject it.”
Pickthall And now that the Truth hath come unto them they say: This is mere magic, and lo! we are disbelievers therein.
Sahih But when the truth came to them, they said, "This is magic, and indeed we are, concerning it, disbelievers."
Yusuf Ali But when the Truth came to them, they said: "This is sorcery, and we do reject it."

43.31

surah 43 - verse 31

translator's name verse
Arberry They say, 'Why was this Koran not sent down upon some man of moment in the two cities?'
Maududi They say: “Why was this Qur'an not sent down upon some great man from the two (main) cities?”
Pickthall And they say: If only this Qur'an had been revealed to some great man of the two towns?
Sahih And they said, "Why was this Qur'an not sent down upon a great man from [one of] the two cities?"
Yusuf Ali Also, they say: "Why is not this Qur'an sent down to some leading man in either of the two (chief) cities?"

43.32

surah 43 - verse 32

translator's name verse
Arberry What, is it they who divide the mercy of the Lord? We have divided between them their livelihood in the present life, and raised some of them above others in rank, that some of them may take others in servitude; and the mercy of thy Lord is better than that they amass.
Maududi Is it they who distribute the Mercy of your Lord? It is We Who have distributed their livelihood among them in the life of this world, and have raised some above others in rank that some of them may harness others to their service. Your Lord's Mercy is better than all the treasures that they hoard.
Pickthall Is it they who apportion thy Lord's mercy? We have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of the world, and raised some of them above others in rank that some of them may take labour from others; and the mercy of thy Lord is better than (the wealth) that they amass.
Sahih Do they distribute the mercy of your Lord? It is We who have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of this world and have raised some of them above others in degrees [of rank] that they may make use of one another for service. But the mercy of your Lord is better than whatever they accumulate.
Yusuf Ali Is it they who would portion out the Mercy of thy Lord? It is We Who portion out between them their livelihood in the life of this world: and We raise some of them above others in ranks, so that some may command work from others. But the Mercy of thy Lord is better than the (wealth) which they amass.

43.33

surah 43 - verse 33

translator's name verse
Arberry And were it not that mankind would be one nation, We would have appointed for those who disbelieve in the All-merciful roofs of silver to their houses, and stairs whereon to mount,
Maududi Were it not that all mankind would become a single community (and follow the same way), We would have provided for all those who disbelieve in the Merciful One silver roofs for their houses, and (silver) stairs on which to go up,
Pickthall And were it not that mankind would have become one community, We might well have appointed, for those who disbelieve in the Beneficent, roofs of silver for their houses and stairs (of silver) whereby to mount,
Sahih And if it were not that the people would become one community [of disbelievers], We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful - for their houses - ceilings and stairways of silver upon which to mount
Yusuf Ali And were it not that (all) men might become of one (evil) way of life, We would provide, for everyone that blasphemes against (Allah) Most Gracious, silver roofs for their houses and (silver) stair-ways on which to go up,

43.34

surah 43 - verse 34

translator's name verse
Arberry and doors to their houses, and couches whereon to recline,
Maududi and (silver) doors to their houses, and couches (of silver) upon which they would recline;
Pickthall And for their houses doors (of silver) and couches of silver whereon to recline,
Sahih And for their houses - doors and couches [of silver] upon which to recline
Yusuf Ali And (silver) doors to their houses, and thrones (of silver) on which they could recline,

43.35

surah 43 - verse 35

translator's name verse
Arberry and ornaments; surely all this is but the enjoyment of the present life, and the world to come with thy Lord is for the godfearing.
Maududi or that they be made of gold. Surely all this is only the enjoyment of the life of the world. But (true prosperity) in the Hereafter with Your Lord is only for the God-fearing.
Pickthall And ornaments of gold. Yet all that would have been but a provision of the life of the world. And the Hereafter with your Lord would have been for those who keep from evil.
Sahih And gold ornament. But all that is not but the enjoyment of worldly life. And the Hereafter with your Lord is for the righteous.
Yusuf Ali And also adornments of gold. But all this were nothing but conveniences of the present life: The Hereafter, in the sight of thy Lord is for the Righteous.

43.36

surah 43 - verse 36

translator's name verse
Arberry Whoso blinds himself to the Remembrance of the All-merciful, to him We assign a Satan for comrade;
Maududi He who is negligent to remember the Merciful One, to him We assign a satan as his boon companion,
Pickthall And he whose sight is dim to the remembrance of the Beneficent, We assign unto him a devil who becometh his comrade;
Sahih And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion.
Yusuf Ali If anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of (Allah) Most Gracious, We appoint for him an evil one, to be an intimate companion to him.

43.37

surah 43 - verse 37

translator's name verse
Arberry and they bar them from the way, and they think they are guided,
Maududi and these satans hinder them from the Right Path, while he still reckons himself to be rightly-guided.
Pickthall And lo! they surely turn them from the way of Allah, and yet they deem that they are rightly guided;
Sahih And indeed, the devils avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided
Yusuf Ali Such (evil ones) really hinder them from the Path, but they think that they are being guided aright!

43.38

surah 43 - verse 38

translator's name verse
Arberry till, when he comes to Us, he says, 'Would there had been between me and thee the distance of the two Easts!' An evil comrade!
Maududi But when he comes to Us, he will say (to his satan): “Would that there had been between me and you the distance as between the East and the West. How evil a companion you were!”
Pickthall Till, when he cometh unto Us, he saith (unto his comrade): Ah, would that between me and thee there were the distance of the two horizons - an evil comrade!
Sahih Until, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "Oh, I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west - how wretched a companion."
Yusuf Ali At length, when (such a one) comes to Us, he says (to his evil companion): "Would that between me and thee were the distance of East and West!" Ah! evil is the companion (indeed)!

43.39

surah 43 - verse 39

translator's name verse
Arberry It shall not profit you today, since you did evil, that you are partners in the chastisement.
Maududi (He will then be told): “Today it will not benefit you the least that after your wrong-doing you and your satans now share the chastisement.”
Pickthall And it profiteth you not this day, because ye did wrong, that ye will be sharers in the doom.
Sahih And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment.
Yusuf Ali When ye have done wrong, it will avail you nothing, that Day, that ye shall be partners in Punishment!

43.40

surah 43 - verse 40

translator's name verse
Arberry What, shalt thou make the deaf to hear, or shalt thou guide the blind and him who is in manifest error?
Maududi Can you, (O Prophet), then make the deaf hear, or direct to the Right Way the blind or one lost in manifest error?
Pickthall Canst thou (Muhammad) make the deaf to hear, or canst thou guide the blind or him who is in error manifest?
Sahih Then will you make the deaf hear, [O Muhammad], or guide the blind or he who is in clear error?
Yusuf Ali Canst thou then make the deaf to hear, or give direction to the blind or to such as (wander) in manifest error?
