29.21
surah 29 - verse 21

Arberry | chastising whom He will, and having mercy on whomsoever He will, and unto Him you shall be turned. |
Maududi | He chastises whom He will and forgives whom He will. To Him all of you will be sent back. |
Pickthall | He punisheth whom He will and showeth mercy unto whom He will, and unto Him ye will be turned. |
Sahih | He punishes whom He wills and has mercy upon whom He wills, and to Him you will be returned. |
Yusuf Ali | "He punishes whom He pleases, and He grants Mercy to whom He pleases, and towards Him are ye turned. |
29.22
surah 29 - verse 22

Arberry | You are not able to frustrate Him either in the earth or in heaven; and you have not, apart from God, either protector or helper. |
Maududi | You cannot overpower Allah, neither on the earth nor in the heaven. None can protect you from Allah nor come to your aid against Him. |
Pickthall | Ye cannot escape (from Him) in the earth or in the sky, and beside Allah there is for you no friend or helper. |
Sahih | And you will not cause failure [to Allah] upon the earth or in the heaven. And you have not other than Allah any protector or any helper. |
Yusuf Ali | "Not on earth nor in heaven will ye be able (fleeing) to frustrate (his Plan), nor have ye, besides Allah, any protector or helper." |
29.23
surah 29 - verse 23

Arberry | And those who disbelieve in God's signs and the encounter with Him -- they despair of My mercy, and there awaits them a painful chastisement.) |
Maududi | Those who disbelieved in Allah's signs and in meeting Him, it is they who have despaired of My Mercy; it is they for whom a painful chastisement lies ahead. |
Pickthall | Those who disbelieve in the revelations of Allah and in (their) Meeting with Him, such have no hope of My mercy. For such there is a painful doom. |
Sahih | And the ones who disbelieve in the signs of Allah and the meeting with Him - those have despaired of My mercy, and they will have a painful punishment. |
Yusuf Ali | Those who reject the Signs of Allah and the Meeting with Him (in the Hereafter),- it is they who shall despair of My Mercy: it is they who will (suffer) a most grievous Penalty. |
29.24
surah 29 - verse 24

Arberry | But the only answer of his people was that they said, 'Slay him, or burn him!' Then God delivered him from the fire; surely in that are signs for a people who believe. |
Maududi | The people (of Abraham) had no other answer than to say: “Kill him or burn him.” But Allah delivered him from the fire. There are many Signs in this for those who believe. |
Pickthall | But the answer of his folk was only that they said: "Kill him" or "Burn him." Then Allah saved him from the Fire. Lo! herein verily are portents for folk who believe. |
Sahih | And the answer of Abraham's people was not but that they said, "Kill him or burn him," but Allah saved him from the fire. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe. |
Yusuf Ali | So naught was the answer of (Abraham's) people except that they said: "Slay him or burn him." But Allah did save him from the Fire. Verily in this are Signs for people who believe. |
29.25
surah 29 - verse 25

Arberry | And he said, 'You have only taken to yourselves idols, apart from God, as a mark of mutual love between you in the present life; then upon the Day of Resurrection you will deny one another, and you will curse one another, and your refuge will be the Fire, and you will have no helpers.' |
Maududi | He said: “You have taken up idols instead of Allah as a bond of love among yourselves in the present life, but on the Day of Resurrection you will disown and curse one another. Your refuge shall be the Fire, and none will come to your aid.” |
Pickthall | He said: Ye have chosen only idols instead of Allah. The love between you is only in the life of the world. Then on the Day of Resurrection ye will deny each other and curse each other, and your abode will be the Fire, and ye will have no helpers. |
Sahih | And [Abraham] said, "You have only taken, other than Allah, idols as [a bond of] affection among you in worldly life. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will deny one another and curse one another, and your refuge will be the Fire, and you will not have any helpers." |
Yusuf Ali | And he said: "For you, ye have taken (for worship) idols besides Allah, out of mutual love and regard between yourselves in this life; but on the Day of Judgment ye shall disown each other and curse each other: and your abode will be the Fire, and ye shall have none to help." |
29.26
surah 29 - verse 26

Arberry | But Lot believed him; and he said, 'I will flee to my Lord; He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.' |
Maududi | Then did Lot believe him, and Abraham said: “I am emigrating unto my Lord. He is All-Powerful, All-Wise,” |
Pickthall | And Lot believed him, and said: Lo! I am a fugitive unto my Lord. Lo! He, only He, is the Mighty, the Wise. |
Sahih | And Lot believed him. [Abraham] said, "Indeed, I will emigrate to [the service of] my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise." |
Yusuf Ali | But Lut had faith in Him: He said: "I will leave home for the sake of my Lord: for He is Exalted in Might, and Wise." |
29.27
surah 29 - verse 27

Arberry | And We gave him Isaac and Jacob, and We appointed the Prophecy and the Book to be among his seed; We gave him his wage in this world, and in the world to come he shall be among the righteous. |
Maududi | and We bestowed upon him (offspring like) Isaac and Jacob, and bestowed prophethood and the Book on his descendants and granted him his reward in this world; he will certainly be among the righteous in the Hereafter. |
Pickthall | And We bestowed on him Isaac and Jacob, and We established the prophethood and the Scripture among his seed, and We gave him his reward in the world, and lo! in the Hereafter he verily is among the righteous. |
Sahih | And We gave to Him Isaac and Jacob and placed in his descendants prophethood and scripture. And We gave him his reward in this world, and indeed, he is in the Hereafter among the righteous. |
Yusuf Ali | And We gave (Abraham) Isaac and Jacob, and ordained among his progeny Prophethood and Revelation, and We granted him his reward in this life; and he was in the Hereafter (of the company) of the Righteous. |
29.28
surah 29 - verse 28

Arberry | And Lot, when he said to his people 'Surely you commit such indecency as never any being in all the world committed before you. |
Maududi | We sent Lot and he said to his people: “You commit the abomination that none in the world ever committed before you. |
Pickthall | And Lot! (Remember) when he said unto his folk: Lo! ye commit lewdness such as no creature did before you. |
Sahih | And [mention] Lot, when he said to his people, "Indeed, you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds. |
Yusuf Ali | And (remember) Lut: behold, he said to his people: "Ye do commit lewdness, such as no people in Creation (ever) committed before you. |
29.29

Arberry | What, do you approach men, and cut the way, and commit in your assembly dishonour?' But the only answer of his people was that they said, 'Then bring us the chastisement of God, if thou speakest truly.' |
Maududi | What! Do you go to men (to satisfy your lust), engage in highway robbery, and commit evil deeds in your gatherings?” Then they had no answer to offer other than to say: “Bring Allah's chastisement upon us if you are truthful.” |
Pickthall | For come ye not in unto males, and cut ye not the road (for travellers), and commit ye not abomination in your meetings? But the answer of his folk was only that they said: Bring Allah's doom upon us if thou art a truthteller! |
Sahih | Indeed, you approach men and obstruct the road and commit in your meetings [every] evil." And the answer of his people was not but they said, "Bring us the punishment of Allah, if you should be of the truthful." |
Yusuf Ali | "Do ye indeed approach men, and cut off the highway?- and practise wickedness (even) in your councils?" But his people gave no answer but this: they said: "Bring us the Wrath of Allah if thou tellest the truth." |
29.30

Arberry | He said, 'My Lord, help me against the people that work corruption.' |
Maududi | Lot said: “My Lord, aid me against these mischievous people.” |
Pickthall | He said: My Lord! Give me victory over folk who work corruption. |
Sahih | He said, "My Lord, support me against the corrupting people." |
Yusuf Ali | He said: "O my Lord! help Thou me against people who do mischief!" |
29.31
surah 29 - verse 31

Arberry | And when Our messengers came to Abraham with the good tidings, they said, 'We shall destroy the people of this city, for its people are evildoers.' |
Maududi | When Our emissaries brought the good news to Abraham, and said (to him): “We are surely going to destroy the inhabitants of this city; its inhabitants are immersed in wrong-doing.” |
Pickthall | And when Our messengers brought Abraham the good news, they said: Lo! we are about to destroy the people of that township, for its people are wrong-doers. |
Sahih | And when Our messengers came to Abraham with the good tidings, they said, "Indeed, we will destroy the people of that Lot's city. Indeed, its people have been wrongdoers." |
Yusuf Ali | When Our Messengers came to Abraham with the good news, they said: "We are indeed going to destroy the people of this township: for truly they are (addicted to) crime." |
29.32
surah 29 - verse 32

Arberry | He said, 'Lot is in it.' They said, 'We know very well who is in it; assuredly We shall deliver him and his family, except his wife; she has become of those that tarry.' |
Maududi | Abraham said: “But Lot is there.” They replied: “We are well aware of those who are there. We shall save him and all his household except his wife.” His wife is among those who will stay behind. |
Pickthall | He said: Lo! Lot is there. They said: We are best aware of who is there. We are to deliver him and his household, all save his wife, who is of those who stay behind. |
Sahih | [Abraham] said, "Indeed, within it is Lot." They said, "We are more knowing of who is within it. We will surely save him and his family, except his wife. She is to be of those who remain behind." |
Yusuf Ali | He said: "But there is Lut there." They said: "Well do we know who is there: we will certainly save him and his following,- except his wife: she is of those who lag behind!" |
29.33
surah 29 - verse 33

Arberry | When that Our messengers came to Lot he was troubled on their account and distressed for them; but they said, 'Fear not, neither sorrow, for surely we shall deliver thee and thy family, except thy wife; she has become of those that tarry. |
Maududi | When Our emissaries came to Lot he was distressed and embarrassed on their account. They said: “Do not fear nor be distressed. We shall save you and all your household except your wife who is among those that will stay behind. |
Pickthall | And when Our messengers came unto Lot, he was troubled upon their account, for he could not protect them; but they said: Fear not, nor grieve! Lo! we are to deliver thee and thy household, (all) save thy wife, who is of those who stay behind. |
Sahih | And when Our messengers came to Lot, he was distressed for them and felt for them great discomfort. They said, "Fear not, nor grieve. Indeed, we will save you and your family, except your wife; she is to be of those who remain behind. |
Yusuf Ali | And when Our Messengers came to Lut, he was grieved on their account, and felt himself powerless (to protect) them: but they said: "Fear thou not, nor grieve: we are (here) to save thee and thy following, except thy wife: she is of those who lag behind. |
29.34
surah 29 - verse 34

Arberry | We shall send down upon the people of this city wrath out of heaven for their ungodliness.' |
Maududi | We shall bring down upon the people of this city a scourge from the heaven because of their evildoing.” |
Pickthall | Lo! We are about to bring down upon the folk of this township a fury from the sky because they are evil-livers. |
Sahih | Indeed, we will bring down on the people of this city punishment from the sky because they have been defiantly disobedient." |
Yusuf Ali | "For we are going to bring down on the people of this township a Punishment from heaven, because they have been wickedly rebellious." |
29.35
surah 29 - verse 35

Arberry | And indeed, We have left thereof a sign, a clear sign? unto a people who understand. |
Maududi | And We have left a vestige of it in that city as a Clear Sign for a people who use their reason. |
Pickthall | And verily of that We have left a clear sign for people who have sense. |
Sahih | And We have certainly left of it a sign as clear evidence for a people who use reason. |
Yusuf Ali | And We have left thereof an evident Sign, for any people who (care to) understand. |
29.36
surah 29 - verse 36

Arberry | And to Midian their brother Shuaib; he said, 'O my people, serve God, and look you for the Last Day; and do not mischief in the land, working corruption.' |
Maududi | And We sent to Midian their brother Shuayb. He said: “My people, serve Allah and look forward to the Last Day and do not go about the earth committing mischief.” |
Pickthall | And unto Midian We sent Shu'eyb, their brother. He said: O my people! Serve Allah, and look forward to the Last Day, and do not evil, making mischief, in the earth. |
Sahih | And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shu'ayb, and he said, "O my people, worship Allah and expect the Last Day and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption." |
Yusuf Ali | To the Madyan (people) (We sent) their brother Shu'aib. Then he said: "O my people! serve Allah, and fear the Last Day: nor commit evil on the earth, with intent to do mischief." |
29.37
surah 29 - verse 37

Arberry | But they cried lies to him; so the earthquake seized them, and morning found them in their habitation fallen prostrate. |
Maududi | But they denounced him as a liar. So a mighty earthquake overtook them, and by the morning they lay overturned in their houses. |
Pickthall | But they denied him, and the dreadful earthquake took them, and morning found them prostrate in their dwelling place. |
Sahih | But they denied him, so the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone. |
Yusuf Ali | But they rejected him: Then the mighty Blast seized them, and they lay prostrate in their homes by the morning. |
29.38
surah 29 - verse 38

Arberry | And Ad, and Thamood -- it has become clear to you from their dwelling-places; and Satan decked out fair to them their works, and barred them from the way, though they saw clearly. |
Maududi | And We destroyed Ad and Thamud, whose dwellings you have observed. Satan had embellished their deeds for them and had turned them away from the Right Path although they were a people of clear perception. |
Pickthall | And (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud! (Their fate) is manifest unto you from their (ruined and deserted) dwellings. Satan made their deeds seem fair unto them and so debarred them from the Way, though they were keen observers. |
Sahih | And [We destroyed] 'Aad and Thamud, and it has become clear to you from their [ruined] dwellings. And Satan had made pleasing to them their deeds and averted them from the path, and they were endowed with perception. |
Yusuf Ali | (Remember also) the 'Ad and the Thamud (people): clearly will appear to you from (the traces) of their buildings (their fate): the Evil One made their deeds alluring to them, and kept them back from the Path, though they were gifted with intelligence and skill. |
29.39
surah 29 - verse 39

Arberry | And Korah, and Pharaoh, and Haman; Moses came to them with the clear signs, but they waxed proud in the earth, yet they outstripped Us not. |
Maududi | And We destroyed Qarun (Korah) and Pharaoh and Haman. Moses came to them with Clear Signs but they waxed arrogant in the land although they could not have outstripped (Us). |
Pickthall | And Korah, Pharaoh and Haman! Moses came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but they were boastful in the land. And they were not winners (in the race). |
Sahih | And [We destroyed] Qarun and Pharaoh and Haman. And Moses had already come to them with clear evidences, and they were arrogant in the land, but they were not outrunners [of Our punishment]. |
Yusuf Ali | (Remember also) Qarun, Pharaoh, and Haman: there came to them Moses with Clear Signs, but they behaved with insolence on the earth; yet they could not overreach (Us). |
29.40
surah 29 - verse 40

Arberry | Each We seized for his sin; and of them against some We loosed a squall of pebbles and some were seized by the Cry, and some We made the earth to swallow, and some We drowned; God would never wrong them, but they wronged themselves. |
Maududi | So We seized each for their sin. We let loose upon some a violent tornado with showers of stones; some were overtaken by a mighty Cry; some were caused to be swallowed up by the earth, and some We drowned. Allah would not wrong them, but it is they who wronged themselves. |
Pickthall | So We took each one in his sin; of them was he on whom We sent a hurricane, and of them was he who was overtaken by the (Awful) Cry, and of them was he whom We caused the earth to swallow, and of them was he whom We drowned. It was not for Allah to wrong them, but they wronged themselves. |
Sahih | So each We seized for his sin; and among them were those upon whom We sent a storm of stones, and among them were those who were seized by the blast [from the sky], and among them were those whom We caused the earth to swallow, and among them were those whom We drowned. And Allah would not have wronged them, but it was they who were wronging themselves. |
Yusuf Ali | Each one of them We seized for his crime: of them, against some We sent a violent tornado (with showers of stones); some were caught by a (mighty) Blast; some We caused the earth to swallow up; and some We drowned (in the waters): It was not Allah Who injured (or oppressed) them:" They injured (and oppressed) their own souls. |
