26.1

26.2

surah 26 - verse 2

Arberry Those are the signs of the Manifest Book.
Maududi These are the verses of the Clear Book.
Pickthall These are revelations of the Scripture that maketh plain.
Sahih These are the verses of the clear Book.
Yusuf Ali These are verses of the Book that makes (things) clear.

26.3

surah 26 - verse 3

translator's name verse
Arberry Perchance thou consumest thyself that they are not believers.
Maududi (O Muhammad), you will perhaps grieve yourself to death because these people do not believe.
Pickthall It may be that thou tormentest thyself (O Muhammad) because they believe not.
Sahih Perhaps, [O Muhammad], you would kill yourself with grief that they will not be believers.
Yusuf Ali It may be thou frettest thy soul with grief, that they do not become Believers.

26.4

surah 26 - verse 4

Arberry If We will, We shall send down on them out of heaven a sign, so their necks will stay humbled to it.
Maududi If We will, We can send down a Sign to them from heaven, so their necks will be humbled to it.
Pickthall If We will, We can send down on them from the sky a portent so that their necks would remain bowed before it.
Sahih If We willed, We could send down to them from the sky a sign for which their necks would remain humbled.
Yusuf Ali If (such) were Our Will, We could send down to them from the sky a Sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.

26.5

surah 26 - verse 5

Arberry But never fresh remembrance comes to them from the All-merciful, except they turn away from it.
Maududi Never does there come to them an admonition from the Merciful Lord but they turn away from it.
Pickthall Never cometh there unto them a fresh reminder from the Beneficent One, but they turn away from it.
Sahih And no revelation comes to them anew from the Most Merciful except that they turn away from it.
Yusuf Ali But there comes not to them a newly-revealed Message from (Allah) Most Gracious, but they turn away therefrom.

26.6

surah 26 - verse 6

Arberry So they have cried lies; therefore assuredly tidings will come to them of that they mocked at.
Maududi They will soon come to know the truth of that which they have been scoffing at.
Pickthall Now they have denied (the Truth); but there will come unto them tidings of that whereat they used to scoff.
Sahih For they have already denied, but there will come to them the news of that which they used to ridicule.
Yusuf Ali They have indeed rejected (the Message): so they will know soon (enough) the truth of what they mocked at!

26.7

surah 26 - verse 7

Arberry What, have they not regarded the earth, how many therein We have caused to grow of every generous kind?
Maududi Do they not look at the earth, how We caused a variety of fine vegetation to grow from it (in abundance)?
Pickthall Have they not seen the earth, how much of every fruitful kind We make to grow therein?
Sahih Did they not look at the earth - how much We have produced therein from every noble kind?
Yusuf Ali Do they not look at the earth,- how many noble things of all kinds We have produced therein?

26.8

surah 26 - verse 8

Arberry Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers.
Maududi Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe.
Pickthall Lo! herein is indeed a portent; yet most of them are not believers.
Sahih Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
Yusuf Ali Verily, in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

26.9

surah 26 - verse 9

Arberry Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate.
Maududi Verily Your Lord is Infinitely Mighty, Most Compassionate.
Pickthall And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.
Sahih And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
Yusuf Ali And verily, thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

26.10

surah 26 - verse 10

Arberry And when thy Lord called to Moses, 'Go to the people of the evildoers,
Maududi (Recount to them about the time) when Your Lord called Moses: "Go to the wrong-doing people,
Pickthall And when thy Lord called Moses, saying: Go unto the wrongdoing folk,
Sahih And [mention] when your Lord called Moses, [saying], "Go to the wrongdoing people -
Yusuf Ali Behold, thy Lord called Moses: "Go to the people of iniquity,-

26.11

surah 26 - verse 11

Arberry the people of Pharaoh; will they not be godfearing?'
Maududi the people of Pharaoh: do they have no fear?"
Pickthall The folk of Pharaoh. Will they not ward off (evil)?
Sahih The people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear Allah?"
Yusuf Ali "The people of the Pharaoh: will they not fear Allah?"

26.12

surah 26 - verse 12

Arberry He said, 'My Lord, I fear they will cry me lies,
Maududi He said: "My Lord! I fear that they will brand me a liar.
Pickthall He said: My Lord! Lo! I fear that they will deny me,
Sahih He said, "My Lord, indeed I fear that they will deny me
Yusuf Ali He said: "O my Lord! I do fear that they will charge me with falsehood:

26.13

surah 26 - verse 13

Arberry and my breast will be straitened, and my tongue will not be loosed; so send to Aaron.
Maududi My breast is constricted and my tongue is not fluent, so endow Messengership on Aaron.
Pickthall And I shall be embarrassed, and my tongue will not speak plainly, therefor send for Aaron (to help me).
Sahih And that my breast will tighten and my tongue will not be fluent, so send for Aaron.
Yusuf Ali "My breast will be straitened. And my speech may not go (smoothly): so send unto Aaron.

26.14

surah 26 - verse 14

Arberry They also have a sin against me, and I fear they will slay me.'
Maududi As for me, they hold the charge of a crime against me. I fear they will put me to death."
Pickthall And they have a crime against me, so I fear that they will kill me.
Sahih And they have upon me a [claim due to] sin, so I fear that they will kill me."
Yusuf Ali "And (further), they have a charge of crime against me; and I fear they may slay me."

26.15

surah 26 - verse 15

Arberry Said He, 'No indeed; but go, both of you, with Our signs, and We assuredly shall be with you, listening.
Maududi He said: "Certainly not! So go both of you with Our Signs. We shall be with you listening to everything.
Pickthall He said: Nay, verily. So go ye twain with Our tokens. Lo! We shall be with you, Hearing.
Sahih [Allah] said, "No. Go both of you with Our signs; indeed, We are with you, listening.
Yusuf Ali Allah said: "By no means! proceed then, both of you, with Our Signs; We are with you, and will listen (to your call).

26.16

surah 26 - verse 16

Arberry So go you to Pharaoh, and say, "Verily, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being;
Maududi Go, then, to Pharaoh and say to him: 'The Lord of the Universe has sent us
Pickthall And come together unto Pharaoh and say: Lo! we bear a message of the Lord of the Worlds,
Sahih Go to Pharaoh and say, 'We are the messengers of the Lord of the worlds,
Yusuf Ali "So go forth, both of you, to Pharaoh, and say: 'We have been sent by the Lord and Cherisher of the worlds;

26.17

surah 26 - verse 17

Arberry so send forth with us the Children of Israel."
Maududi that you let the Children of Israel go with us.'"
Pickthall (Saying): Let the Children of Israel go with us.
Sahih [Commanded to say], "Send with us the Children of Israel."'"
Yusuf Ali "'Send thou with us the Children of Israel.'"

26.18

surah 26 - verse 18

Arberry He said, 'Did we not raise thee amongst us as a child? Didst thou not tarry among us years of thy life?
Maududi Pharaoh said: "Did we not bring you up among us when you were a child?
Pickthall (Pharaoh) said (unto Moses): Did we not rear thee among us as a child? And thou didst dwell many years of thy life among us,
Sahih [Pharaoh] said, "Did we not raise you among us as a child, and you remained among us for years of your life?
Yusuf Ali (Pharaoh) said: "Did we not cherish thee as a child among us, and didst thou not stay in our midst many years of thy life?

26.19

surah 26 - verse 19

Arberry And thou didst the deed thou didst, being one of the ungrateful!'
Maududi You spent many years of your life among us and then you committed that deed of yours. You are very ungrateful indeed."
Pickthall And thou didst that thy deed which thou didst, and thou wast one of the ingrates.
Sahih And [then] you did your deed which you did, and you were of the ungrateful."
Yusuf Ali "And thou didst a deed of thine which (thou knowest) thou didst, and thou art an ungrateful (wretch)!"

26.20

surah 26 - verse 20

Arberry Said he, 'Indeed I did it then, being one of those that stray;
Maududi Moses replied: "I committed that act erringly.
Pickthall He said: I did it then, when I was of those who are astray.
Sahih [Moses] said, "I did it, then, while I was of those astray.
Yusuf Ali Moses said: "I did it then, when I was in error.
