Chapter 25

25.1

surah 25 - verse 1

Arberry	Blessed be He who has sent down the Salvation upon His servant, that he may be a warner to all beings;
Maududi	Highly blessed is He, Who has sent down Al-Furqan, to His servant so that it may be a warner to all mankind:
Pickthall	Blessed is He Who hath revealed unto His slave the Criterion (of right and wrong), that he may be a warner to the peoples.
Sahih	Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His Servant that he may be to the worlds a warner -
Yusuf Ali	Blessed is He who sent down the criterion to His servant, that it may be an admonition to all creatures;-

25.2

surah 25 - verse 2

translator's name	verse
Arberry	to whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth; and He has not taken to Him a son, and He has no associate in the Kingdom; and He created every thing, then He ordained it very exactly.
Maududi	He to Whom belongs the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth: Who has begotten no son: Who has no partner in His Sovereignty: Who created each and every thing and then ordained its destiny.
Pickthall	He unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth, He hath chosen no son nor hath He any partner in the Sovereignty. He hath created everything and hath meted out for it a measure.
Sahih	He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and who has not taken a son and has not had a partner in dominion and has created each thing and determined it with [precise] determination.
Yusuf Ali	He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth: no son has He begotten, nor has He a partner in His dominion: it is He who created all things, and ordered them in due proportions.

25.3

surah 25 - verse 3

Arberry	Yet they have taken to them gods, apart from Him, that create nothing and themselves are created, and have no power to hurt or profit themselves, no power of death or life or raising up.
Maududi	Yet the people have set up, besides Him, deities, who do not create anything but are themselves created: who can neither harm nor help even themselves: who have no power over life or death, nor can they raise up the dead.
Pickthall	Yet they choose beside Him other gods who create naught but are themselves created, and possess not hurt nor profit for themselves, and possess not death nor life, nor power to raise the dead.
Sahih	But they have taken besides Him gods which create nothing, while they are created, and possess not for themselves any harm or benefit and possess not [power to cause] death or life or resurrection.
Yusuf Ali	Yet have they taken, besides him, gods that can create nothing but are themselves created; that have no control of hurt or good to themselves; nor can they control death nor life nor resurrection.

25.4

surah 25 - verse 4

Arberry	The unbelievers say, 'This is naught but a calumny he has forged, and other folk have helped him to it.' So they have committed wrong and falsehood.
Maududi	Those who have rejected the Message of the Prophet, say, "This (Al-Furgan) is a forgery which this man himself has devised, and some others have helped him at it. " What a cruel injustice and an impudent lie!
Pickthall	Those who disbelieve say: This is naught but a lie that he hath invented, and other folk have helped him with it, so that they have produced a slander and a lie.
Sahih	And those who disbelieve say, "This [Qur'an] is not except a falsehood he invented, and another people assisted him in it." But they have committed an injustice and a lie.
Yusuf Ali	But the misbelievers say: "Naught is this but a lie which he has forged, and others have helped him at it." In truth it is they who have put forward an iniquity and a falsehood.

25.5

surah 25 - verse 5

Arberry	They say, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients that he has had written down, so that they are recited to him at the dawn and in the evening.'
Maududi	They say, "These things are the writings of the ancients which he has got copied down for himself, and then these are recited to him in the morning and evening.''
Pickthall	And they say: Fables of the men of old which he hath had written down so that they are dictated to him morn and evening.
Sahih	And they say, "Legends of the former peoples which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon."
Yusuf Ali	And they say: "Tales of the ancients, which he has caused to be written: and they are dictated before him morning and evening."

25.6

surah 25 - verse 6

Arberry	Say: 'He sent it down, who knows the secret in the heavens and earth; He is All-forgiving, All-compassionate.'
Maududi	O Muhammad, say to them, "This has been sent down by Him, Who knows the secret of the heavens and the earth." The fact is that He is very Forgiving and Merciful.
Pickthall	Say (unto them, O Muhammad): He who knoweth the secret of the heavens and the earth hath revealed it. Lo! He ever is Forgiving, Merciful.
Sahih	Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed by He who knows [every] secret within the heavens and the earth. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving and Merciful."
Yusuf Ali	Say: "The (Qur'an) was sent down by Him who knows the mystery (that is) in the heavens and the earth: verily He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

25.7

surah 25 - verse 7

Arberry	They also say, 'What ails this Messenger that he eats food, and goes in the markets? Why has an angel not been sent down to him, to be a warner with him?
Maududi	They say, "What sort of a Messenger is he that he eats food and moves about in the streets? Why has not an angel been sent down to accompany him and threaten (the disbelievers)?
Pickthall	And they say: What aileth this messenger (of Allah) that he eateth food and walketh in the markets? Why is not an angel sent down unto him, to be a warner with him.
Sahih	And they say, "What is this messenger that eats food and walks in the markets? Why was there not sent down to him an angel so he would be with him a warner?
Yusuf Ali	And they say: "What sort of a messenger is this, who eats food, and walks through the streets? Why has not an angel been sent down to him to give admonition with him?

25.8

surah 25 - verse 8

Arberry	Or why is not a treasure thrown to him, or why has he not a Garden to eat of?' The evildoers say, 'You are only following a man bewitched!'
Maududi	Or why has not at least a treasure been sent down for him or a garden given to him for (easy) sustenance?" And the wicked people say, "You are following a man bewitched."
Pickthall	Or (why is not) treasure thrown down unto him, or why hath he not a paradise from whence to eat? And the evil-doers say: Ye are but following a man bewitched.
Sahih	Or [why is not] a treasure presented to him [from heaven], or does he [not] have a garden from which he eats?" And the wrongdoers say, "You follow not but a man affected by magic."
Yusuf Ali	"Or (Why) has not a treasure been bestowed on him, or why has he (not) a garden for enjoyment?" The wicked say: "Ye follow none other than a man bewitched."

25.9

surah 25 - verse 9

Arberry	Behold, how they strike similitudes for thee, and go astray, and are unable to find a way!
Maududi	Just see what strange arguments they bring forward with regard to you! They have gone so far astray that they cannot charge any thing against you.
Pickthall	See how they coin similitudes for thee, so that they are all astray and cannot find a road!
Sahih	Look how they strike for you comparisons; but they have strayed, so they cannot [find] a way.
Yusuf Ali	See what kinds of comparisons they make for thee! But they have gone astray, and never a way will they be able to find!

25.10

surah 25 - verse 10

Arberry	Blessed be He who, if He will, shall assign to them better than that -- gardens underneath which rivers flow, and he shall assign to thee palaces.
Maududi	Highly blessed is He, Who, if He wills, could give you much more and better things than what they propose for you: (Not one but) many gardens, beneath which rivers flow; and big castles:
Pickthall	Blessed is He Who, if He will, will assign thee better than (all) that - Gardens underneath which rivers flow - and will assign thee mansions.
Sahih	Blessed is He who, if He willed, could have made for you [something] better than that - gardens beneath which rivers flow - and could make for you palaces.
Yusuf Ali	Blessed is He who, if that were His will, could give thee better (things) than those,- Gardens beneath which rivers flow; and He could give thee palaces (secure to dwell in).

25.11

surah 25 - verse 11

Arberry	Nay, but they cry lies to the Hour; and We have prepared for him who cries lies to the Hour a Blaze.
Maududi	The fact of the matter is that these people have denied "the Hour", --And for the one who denies the coming of the Hour, We have prepared a blazing Fire.
Pickthall	Nay, but they deny (the coming of) the Hour, and for those who deny (the coming of) the Hour We have prepared a flame.
Sahih	But they have denied the Hour, and We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a Blaze.
Yusuf Ali	Nay they deny the hour (of the judgment to come): but We have prepared a blazing fire for such as deny the hour:

25.12

surah 25 - verse 12

Arberry	When it sees them from a far place, they shall hear its bubbling and sighing.
Maududi	When it will see them from afar, they will hear the sounds of its raging and roaring.
Pickthall	When it seeth them from afar, they hear the crackling and the roar thereof.
Sahih	When the Hellfire sees them from a distant place, they will hear its fury and roaring.
Yusuf Ali	When it sees them from a place far off, they will hear its fury and its ranging sigh.

25.13

surah 25 - verse 13

Arberry	And when they are cast, coupled in fetters, into a narrow place of that Fire, they will call out there for destruction.
Maududi	And when they are chained together and flung into a narrow space therein, they will begin to call for death.
Pickthall	And when they are flung into a narrow place thereof, chained together, they pray for destruction there.
Sahih	And when they are thrown into a narrow place therein bound in chains, they will cry out thereupon for destruction.
Yusuf Ali	And when they are cast, bound together into a constricted place therein, they will plead for destruction there and then!

25.14

surah 25 - verse 14

Arberry	'Call not out today for one destruction, but call for many!'
Maududi	(Then it will be said to them:) "Do not call for one death today, but call for many deaths."
Pickthall	Pray not that day for one destruction, but pray for many destructions!
Sahih	[They will be told], "Do not cry this Day for one destruction but cry for much destruction."
Yusuf Ali	"This day plead not for a single destruction: plead for destruction oft-repeated!"

25.15

surah 25 - verse 15

Arberry	Say: 'Is that better, or the Garden of Eternity, that is promised to the godfearing, and is their recompense and homecoming?'
Maududi	Ask them "Is this (Fire) better or the everlasting Garden which has been promised to the God-fearing righteous people?" which will be the recompense of their good deeds and the final destination of their journey
Pickthall	Say: Is that (doom) better or the Garden of Immortality which is promised unto those who ward off (evil)? It will be their reward and journey's end.
Sahih	Say, "Is that better or the Garden of Eternity which is promised to the righteous? It will be for them a reward and destination.
Yusuf Ali	Say: "Is that best, or the eternal garden, promised to the righteous? for them, that is a reward as well as a goal (of attainment).

25.16

surah 25 - verse 16

Arberry	Therein they shall have what they will dwelling forever; it is a promise binding upon thy Lord, and of Him to be required.
Maududi	wherein they will get everything they desire and wherein they will dwell for ever. This is a promise which your Lord has taken upon Himself to fulfil.
Pickthall	Therein abiding, they have all that they desire. It is for thy Lord a promise that must be fulfilled.
Sahih	For them therein is whatever they wish, [while] abiding eternally. It is ever upon your Lord a promise [worthy to be] requested.
Yusuf Ali	"For them there will be therein all that they wish for: they will dwell (there) for aye: A promise to be prayed for from thy Lord."

25.17

surah 25 - verse 17

Arberry	Upon the day when He shall muster them and that they serve, apart from God, and He shall say, 'Was it you that led these My servants astray, or did they themselves err from the way?'
Maududi	And on that Day (your Lord will gather these people together as well as their deities, whom they worship besides AIlah. Then He will ask them, "Did you mislead these servants of Mine, or did they themselves go astray?"
Pickthall	And on the day when He will assemble them and that which they worship instead of Allah and will say: Was it ye who misled these my slaves or did they (themselves) wander from the way?
Sahih	And [mention] the Day He will gather them and that which they worship besides Allah and will say, "Did you mislead these, My servants, or did they [themselves] stray from the way?"
Yusuf Ali	The day He will gather them together as well as those whom they worship besides Allah, He will ask: "Was it ye who let these My servants astray, or did they stray from the Path themselves?"

25.18

surah 25 - verse 18

Arberry	They shall 'Glory be to Thee! It did not behove us to take unto say, ourselves protectors apart from Thee; but Thou gavest them and their fathers enjoyment of days, until they forgot
Maududi	They will answer, "Glory be to Thee! We dared not take anyguardian besides Thee: (they were misled because) Thou didst give them and their forefathers all the good things of life till they forgot the Admonition, and incurred the punishment. "
Pickthall	They will say: Be Thou Glorified! it was not for us to choose any protecting friends beside thee; but Thou didst give them and their fathers ease till they forgot the warning and became lost folk.
Sahih	They will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for us to take besides You any allies. But You provided comforts for them and their fathers until they forgot the message and became a people ruined."
Yusuf Ali	They will say: "Glory to Thee! not meet was it for us that we should take for protectors others besides Thee: But Thou didst bestow, on them and their fathers, good things (in life), until they forgot the Message: for they were a people (worthless and) lost."

25.19

surah 25 - verse 19

Arberry	the Remembrance, and were a people corrupt.' So they cried lies touching the things you say, and you can neither turn it aside, nor find any help. Whosoever of you does evil, We shall let him taste a great chastisement.
Maududi	Thus will your gods deny alI that you are professing today. Then you shall neither be able to repel your punishment nor shall get any help from anywhere; and whoso is guilty. of iniquity'' among you, We shall make him taste a severe torment.
Pickthall	Thus they will give you the lie regarding what ye say, then ye can neither avert (the doom) nor obtain help. And whoso among you doeth wrong, We shall make him taste great torment.
Sahih	So they will deny you, [disbelievers], in what you say, and you cannot avert [punishment] or [find] help. And whoever commits injustice among you - We will make him taste a great punishment.
Yusuf Ali	(Allah will say): "Now have they proved you liars in what ye say: so ye cannot avert (your penalty) nor (get) help." And whoever among you does wrong, him shall We cause to taste of a grievous Penalty.

25.20

surah 25 - verse 20

Arberry	And We sent not before thee any Envoys, but that they ate food, and went in the markets; and We appointed some of you to be a trial for others: 'Will you endure?' Thy Lord is ever All-seeing.
Maududi	O Muhammad,, all the Messengers whom We sent before you also ate food and moved about in the streets. In fact, We have made you all a means of test for one another. Will you show patience? for your Lord sees everything.
Pickthall	We never sent before thee any messengers but lo! they verily ate food and walked in the markets. And We have appointed some of you a test for others: Will ye be steadfast? And thy Lord is ever Seer.
Sahih	And We did not send before you, [O Muhammad], any of the messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets. And We have made some of you [people] as trial for others - will you have patience? And ever is your Lord, Seeing.
Yusuf Ali	And the messengers whom We sent before thee were all (men) who ate food and walked through the streets: We have made some of you as a trial for others: will ye have patience? for Allah is One Who sees (all things).
