21.61
surah 21 - verse 61

Arberry | They said, 'Bring him before the people's eyes; haply they shall bear witness.' |
Maududi | The others said: "Bring him, then, before the eyes of the people that they may see (what will be done to him)." |
Pickthall | They said: Then bring him (hither) before the people's eyes that they may testify. |
Sahih | They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may testify." |
Yusuf Ali | They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may bear witness." |
21.62
surah 21 - verse 62

Arberry | They said, 'So, art thou the man who did this unto our gods, Abraham?' |
Maududi | (On Abraham's arrival) they said: "Abraham, are you he who has done this to our gods?" |
Pickthall | They said: Is it thou who hast done this to our gods, O Abraham? |
Sahih | They said, "Have you done this to our gods, O Abraham?" |
Yusuf Ali | They said, "Art thou the one that did this with our gods, O Abraham?" |

Arberry | He said, 'No; it was this great one of them that did it. Question them; if they are able to speak!' |
Maududi | He answered: "Rather it was this supreme one who has done it. So ask them, if they can speak." |
Pickthall | He said: But this, their chief hath done it. So question them, if they can speak. |
Sahih | He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak." |
Yusuf Ali | He said: "Nay, this was done by - this is their biggest one! ask them, if they can speak intelligently!" |

Arberry | So they returned one to another, and they said, 'Surely it is you who are the evildoers.' |
Maududi | Thereupon they turned to their (inner) selves and said (to themselves): "Surely it is you who are the wrong-doers." |
Pickthall | Then gathered they apart and said: Lo! ye yourselves are the wrong-doers. |
Sahih | So they returned to [blaming] themselves and said [to each other], "Indeed, you are the wrongdoers." |
Yusuf Ali | So they turned to themselves and said, "Surely ye are the ones in the wrong!" |

surah 21 - verse 65

Arberry | Then they were utterly put to confusion saying, 'Very well indeed thou knowest these do not speak.' |
Maududi | Then their minds were turned upside down, and they said: "You know well that they do not speak." |
Pickthall | And they were utterly confounded, and they said: Well thou knowest that these speak not. |
Sahih | Then they reversed themselves, [saying], "You have already known that these do not speak!" |
Yusuf Ali | Then were they confounded with shame: (they said), "Thou knowest full well that these (idols) do not speak!" |

Maududi | Abraham said: "Do you, then, worship beside Allah a thing that can neither benefit you nor hurt you? |
Pickthall | He said: Worship ye then instead of Allah that which cannot profit you at all, nor harm you? |
Sahih | He said, "Then do you worship instead of Allah that which does not benefit you at all or harm you? |
Yusuf Ali | (Abraham) said, "Do ye then worship, besides Allah, things that can neither be of any good to you nor do you harm? |

Arberry | Fie upon you and that you serve apart from God! Do you not understand?' |
Maududi | Fie upon you and upon all that you worship beside Allah. Do you have no sense?" |
Pickthall | Fie on you and all that ye worship instead of Allah! Have ye then no sense? |
Sahih | Uff to you and to what you worship instead of Allah. Then will you not use reason?" |
Yusuf Ali | "Fie upon you, and upon the things that ye worship besides Allah! Have ye no sense?".. |
21.68

Maududi | They said: "Burn him, and come to the support of your gods, if you are going to do anything." |
Pickthall | They cried: Burn him and stand by your gods, if ye will be doing. |
Sahih | They said, "Burn him and support your gods - if you are to act." |
Yusuf Ali | They said, "Burn him and protect your gods, If ye do (anything at all)!" |

Yusuf Ali | We said, "O Fire! be thou cool, and (a means of) safety for Abraham!" |
21.70
surah 21 - verse 70

Arberry | They desired to outwit him; so We made them the worse losers, |
Maududi | They had sought to do evil to him, but We caused them to be the worst losers, |
Pickthall | And they wished to set a snare for him, but We made them the greater losers. |
Sahih | And they intended for him harm, but We made them the greatest losers. |
Yusuf Ali | Then they sought a stratagem against him: but We made them the ones that lost most! |
21.71
surah 21 - verse 71

Arberry | and We delivered him, and Lot, unto the land that We had blessed for all beings. |
Maududi | and We saved him and Lot and brought him to the land upon which We had bestowed Our blessings for all the people of the world. |
Pickthall | And We rescued him and Lot (and brought them) to the land which We have blessed for (all) peoples. |
Sahih | And We delivered him and Lot to the land which We had blessed for the worlds. |
Yusuf Ali | But We delivered him and (his nephew) Lut (and directed them) to the land which We have blessed for the nations. |

Arberry | And We gave him Isaac and Jacob in superfluity, and every one made We righteous |
Maududi | And We bestowed upon him Isaac and Jacob as an additional gift, making each of them righteous. |
Pickthall | And We bestowed upon him Isaac, and Jacob as a grandson. Each of them We made righteous. |
Sahih | And We gave him Isaac and Jacob in addition, and all [of them] We made righteous. |
Yusuf Ali | And We bestowed on him Isaac and, as an additional gift, (a grandson), Jacob, and We made righteous men of every one (of them). |
21.73
surah 21 - verse 73

Arberry | and appointed them to be leaders guiding by Our command, and We revealed to them the doing of good deeds, and to perform the prayer, and to pay the alms, and Us they served. |
Maududi | And We made them into leaders to guide people in accordance with Our command, and We inspired them to good works, and to establish Prayers and to give Zakah. They worshipped Us alone. |
Pickthall | And We made them chiefs who guide by Our command, and We inspired in them the doing of good deeds and the right establishment of worship and the giving of alms, and they were worshippers of Us (alone). |
Sahih | And We made them leaders guiding by Our command. And We inspired to them the doing of good deeds, establishment of prayer, and giving of zakah; and they were worshippers of Us. |
Yusuf Ali | And We made them leaders, guiding (men) by Our Command, and We sent them inspiration to do good deeds, to establish regular prayers, and to practise regular charity; and they constantly served Us (and Us only). |
21.74
surah 21 - verse 74

Arberry | And Lot -- to him We gave judgment and knowledge; and we delivered him from the city that had been doing deeds of corruption; they were an evil people, truly ungodly; |
Maududi | We bestowed upon Lot sound judgement and knowledge, and We delivered him from the city that was immersed in foul deeds. They were indeed a wicked people, exceedingly disobedient. |
Pickthall | And unto Lot we gave judgment and knowledge, and We delivered him from the community that did abominations. Lo! they were folk of evil, lewd. |
Sahih | And to Lot We gave judgement and knowledge, and We saved him from the city that was committing wicked deeds. Indeed, they were a people of evil, defiantly disobedient. |
Yusuf Ali | And to Lut, too, We gave Judgment and Knowledge, and We saved him from the town which practised abominations: truly they were a people given to Evil, a rebellious people. |
21.75
surah 21 - verse 75

Arberry | and We admitted him into Our mercy; he was of the righteous. |
Maududi | And We admitted him into Our mercy. Verily he was of the righteous. |
Pickthall | And We brought him in unto Our mercy. Lo! he was of the righteous. |
Sahih | And We admitted him into Our mercy. Indeed, he was of the righteous. |
Yusuf Ali | And We admitted him to Our Mercy: for he was one of the Righteous. |
21.76
surah 21 - verse 76

Arberry | And Noah -- when he called before, and We answered him, and delivered him and his people from the great distress, |
Maududi | We bestowed the same favour upon Noah. Recall, when he cried to Us before; We accepted his prayer and delivered him and his household from the great distress |
Pickthall | And Noah, when he cried of old, We heard his prayer and saved him and his household from the great affliction. |
Sahih | And [mention] Noah, when he called [to Allah] before [that time], so We responded to him and saved him and his family from the great flood. |
Yusuf Ali | (Remember) Noah, when he cried (to Us) aforetime: We listened to his (prayer) and delivered him and his family from great distress. |
21.77
surah 21 - verse 77

Arberry | and We helped him against the people who cried lies to Our signs; surely they were an evil people, so We drowned them all together. |
Maududi | and We helped him against a people who rejected Our signs as false. They were indeed an evil people and so We drowned them all. |
Pickthall | And delivered him from the people who denied Our revelations. Lo! they were folk of evil, therefor did We drown them all. |
Sahih | And We saved him from the people who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were a people of evil, so We drowned them, all together. |
Yusuf Ali | We helped him against people who rejected Our Signs: truly they were a people given to Evil: so We drowned them (in the Flood) all together. |
21.78
surah 21 - verse 78

Arberry | And David and Solomon -- when they gave judgment concerning the tillage, when the sheep of the people strayed there, and We bore witness to their judgment; |
Maududi | We bestowed the same favour upon David and Solomon. Recall, when they gave judgement regarding a tillage into which the sheep of some people had strayed at night, and We were witnesses to their judgement. |
Pickthall | And David and Solomon, when they gave judgment concerning the field, when people's sheep had strayed and browsed therein by night; and We were witnesses to their judgment. |
Sahih | And [mention] David and Solomon, when they judged concerning the field - when the sheep of a people overran it [at night], and We were witness to their judgement. |
Yusuf Ali | And remember David and Solomon, when they gave judgment in the matter of the field into which the sheep of certain people had strayed by night: We did witness their judgment. |
21.79
surah 21 - verse 79

Arberry | and We made Solomon to understand it, and unto each gave We judgment and knowledge. And with David We subjected the mountains to give glory, and the birds, and We were doers. |
Maududi | We guided Solomon to the right verdict, and We had granted each of them judgement and knowledge. We made the mountains and the birds celebrate the praise of Allah with David. It was We Who did all this. |
Pickthall | And We made Solomon to understand (the case); and unto each of them We gave judgment and knowledge. And we subdued the hills and the birds to hymn (His) praise along with David. We were the doers (thereof). |
Sahih | And We gave understanding of the case to Solomon, and to each [of them] We gave judgement and knowledge. And We subjected the mountains to exalt [Us], along with David and [also] the birds. And We were doing [that]. |
Yusuf Ali | To Solomon We inspired the (right) understanding of the matter: to each (of them) We gave Judgment and Knowledge; it was Our power that made the hills and the birds celebrate Our praises, with David: it was We Who did (all these things). |
21.80
surah 21 - verse 80

Arberry | And We taught him the fashioning of garments for you, to fortify you against your violence; then are you thankful? |
Maududi | It was We Who taught him the art of making coats of mail for your benefit so that it may protect you from each other's violence. Do you, then, give thanks? |
Pickthall | And We taught him the art of making garments (of mail) to protect you in your daring. Are ye then thankful? |
Sahih | And We taught him the fashioning of coats of armor to protect you from your [enemy in] battle. So will you then be grateful? |
Yusuf Ali | It was We Who taught him the making of coats of mail for your benefit, to guard you from each other's violence: will ye then be grateful? |
