20.2

surah 20 - verse 2

Arberry We have not sent down the Koran upon thee for thee to be unprosperous,
Maududi We did not reveal the Qur'an to you to cause you distress;
Pickthall We have not revealed unto thee (Muhammad) this Qur'an that thou shouldst be distressed,
Sahih We have not sent down to you the Qur'an that you be distressed
Yusuf Ali We have not sent down the Qur'an to thee to be (an occasion) for thy distress,

20.3

surah 20 - verse 3

Arberry but only as a reminder to him who tears,
Maududi it is only a reminder for him who fears Allah;
Pickthall But as a reminder unto him who feareth,
Sahih But only as a reminder for those who fear [Allah] -
Yusuf Ali But only as an admonition to those who fear (Allah),-

20.4

surah 20 - verse 4

Arberry a revelation from Him who created the earth and the high heavens;
Maududi a revelation from Him Who created the earth and the high heavens.
Pickthall A revelation from Him Who created the earth and the high heavens,
Sahih A revelation from He who created the earth and highest heavens,
Yusuf Ali A revelation from Him Who created the earth and the heavens on high.

20.5

surah 20 - verse 5

Arberry the All-compassionate sat Himself upon the Throne; to Him belongs
Maududi The Most Compassionate Lord is settled on the Throne (of the Universe).
Pickthall The Beneficent One, Who is established on the Throne.
Sahih The Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established.
Yusuf Ali (Allah) Most Gracious is firmly established on the throne (of authority).

20.6

surah 20 - verse 6

Arberry all that is in the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, and all that is underneath the soil.
Maududi To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, and all that is in between, and all that is beneath the soil.
Pickthall Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, and whatsoever is between them, and whatsoever is beneath the sod.
Sahih To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth and what is between them and what is under the soil.
Yusuf Ali To Him belongs what is in the heavens and on earth, and all between them, and all beneath the soil.

20.7

surah 20 - verse 7

Arberry Be thou loud in thy speech, yet surely He knows the secret and that yet more hidden.
Maududi Whether you speak out aloud (or in a low voice), He knows what is said secretly, and even that which is most hidden.
Pickthall And if thou speakest aloud, then lo! He knoweth the secret (thought) and (that which is yet) more hidden.
Sahih And if you speak aloud - then indeed, He knows the secret and what is [even] more hidden.
Yusuf Ali If thou pronounce the word aloud, (it is no matter): for verily He knoweth what is secret and what is yet more hidden.

20.8

surah 20 - verse 8

Arberry God -- there is no god but He. To Him belong the Names Most Beautiful.
Maududi Allah - there is no god but He. His are the most excellent names.
Pickthall Allah! There is no Allah save Him. His are the most beautiful names.
Sahih Allah - there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names.
Yusuf Ali Allah! there is no god but He! To Him belong the most Beautiful Names.

20.9

Arberry Hast thou received the story of Moses?
Maududi Has the story of Moses reached you?
Pickthall Hath there come unto thee the story of Moses?
Sahih And has the story of Moses reached you? -
Yusuf Ali Has the story of Moses reached thee?

20.10

surah 20 - verse 10

Arberry When he saw a fire, and said to his family, 'Tarry you here; I observe a fire. Perhaps I shall bring you a brand from it, or I shall find at the fire guidance.'
Maududi When he saw a fire and said to his family: "Hold on! I have just perceived a fire; perhaps I will bring a brand from it for you, or I will find some guidance at the fire about the way to follow."
Pickthall When he saw a fire and said unto his folk: Lo! Wait! I see a fire afar off. Peradventure I may bring you a brand therefrom or may find guidance at the fire.
Sahih When he saw a fire and said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire; perhaps I can bring you a torch or find at the fire some guidance."
Yusuf Ali Behold, he saw a fire: So he said to his family, "Tarry ye; I perceive a fire; perhaps I can bring you some burning brand therefrom, or find some guidance at the fire."

20.11

surah 20 - verse 11

Arberry When he came to it, a voice cried, 'Moses,
Maududi When he came to it, a voice called out: "Moses!
Pickthall And when he reached it, he was called by name: O Moses!
Sahih And when he came to it, he was called, "O Moses,
Yusuf Ali But when he came to the fire, a voice was heard: "O Moses!

20.12

surah 20 - verse 12

Arberry I am thy Lord; put off thy shoes; thou art in the holy valley, Towa.
Maududi Verily I am your Lord! Take off your shoes. You are in the sacred valley, Tuwa!
Pickthall Lo! I, even I, am thy Lord, So take off thy shoes, for lo! thou art in the holy valley of Tuwa.
Sahih Indeed, I am your Lord, so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa.
Yusuf Ali "Verily I am thy Lord! therefore (in My presence) put off thy shoes: thou art in the sacred valley Tuwa.

20.13

surah 20 - verse 13

Arberry I Myself have chosen thee; therefore give thou ear to this revelation.
Maududi I Myself have chosen you; therefore, give ear to what is revealed.
Pickthall And I have chosen thee, so hearken unto that which is inspired.
Sahih And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed [to you].
Yusuf Ali "I have chosen thee: listen, then, to the inspiration (sent to thee).

20.14

surah 20 - verse 14

Arberry Verily I am God; there is no god but I; therefore serve Me, and perform the prayer of My remembrance.
Maududi Verily I am Allah. There is no god beside Me. So serve Me and establish Prayers to remember Me.
Pickthall Lo! I, even I, am Allah, There is no Allah save Me. So serve Me and establish worship for My remembrance.
Sahih Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.
Yusuf Ali "Verily, I am Allah: There is no god but I: So serve thou Me (only), and establish regular prayer for celebrating My praise.

20.15

surah 20 - verse 15

Arberry The Hour is coming; I would conceal it that every soul may be recompensed for its labours.
Maududi The Hour of Resurrection is coming. I have willed to keep the time of its coming hidden so that everyone may be recompensed in accordance with his effort.
Pickthall Lo! the Hour is surely coming. But I will to keep it hidden, that every soul may be rewarded for that which it striveth (to achieve).
Sahih Indeed, the Hour is coming - I almost conceal it - so that every soul may be recompensed according to that for which it strives.
Yusuf Ali "Verily the Hour is coming - My design is to keep it hidden - for every soul to receive its reward by the measure of its Endeavour.

20.16

surah 20 - verse 16

Arberry Let none bar thee from it, that believes not in it but follows after his own caprice, or thou wilt perish.
Maududi Let him who does not believe in it and follows his lust not turn your thought away from it, lest you are ruined.
Pickthall Therefor, let not him turn thee aside from (the thought of) it who believeth not therein but followeth his own desire, lest thou perish.
Sahih So do not let one avert you from it who does not believe in it and follows his desire, for you [then] would perish.
Yusuf Ali "Therefore let not such as believe not therein but follow their own lusts, divert thee therefrom, lest thou perish!"..

20.17

surah 20 - verse 17

Arberry What is that, Moses, thou hast in thy right hand?'
Maududi And what is in your right hand, O Moses?"
Pickthall And what is that in thy right hand, O Moses?
Sahih And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?"
Yusuf Ali "And what is that in the right hand, O Moses?"

20.18

surah 20 - verse 18

Arberry 'Why, it is my staff,' said Moses. 'I lean upon it, and with it I beat down leaves to feed my sheep; other uses also I find in it.
Maududi Moses answered: "This is my staff. I lean on it (when I walk), and with it I beat down leaves for my flock, and I have many other uses for it."
Pickthall He said: This is my staff whereon I lean, and wherewith I bear down branches for my sheep, and wherein I find other uses.
Sahih He said, "It is my staff; I lean upon it, and I bring down leaves for my sheep and I have therein other uses."
Yusuf Ali He said, "It is my rod: on it I lean; with it I beat down fodder for my flocks; and in it I find other uses."

20.19

surah 20 - verse 19

Arberry Said He, 'Cast it down, Moses!'
Maududi He said: "Moses, throw it down."
Pickthall He said: Cast it down, O Moses!
Sahih [Allah] said, "Throw it down, O Moses."
Yusuf Ali (Allah) said, "Throw it, O Moses!"

20.20

surah 20 - verse 20

Arberry and he cast it down, and behold it was a serpent sliding.
Maududi So he threw it down, and lo! it was a rapidly moving snake.
Pickthall So he cast it down, and lo! it was a serpent, gliding.
Sahih So he threw it down, and thereupon it was a snake, moving swiftly.
Yusuf Ali He threw it, and behold! It was a snake, active in motion.
