20.21

surah 20 - verse 21

Arberry Said He, 'Take it, and fear not; We will restore it to its first state.
Maududi Then He said: "Seize it and have no fear. We shall restore it to its former state.
Pickthall He said: Grasp it and fear not. We shall return it to its former state.
Sahih [Allah] said, "Seize it and fear not; We will return it to its former condition.
Yusuf Ali (Allah) said, "Seize it, and fear not: We shall return it at once to its former condition"..

20.22

surah 20 - verse 22

Arberry Now clasp thy hand to thy arm-pit; it shall come forth white, without evil. That is a second sign.
Maududi And place your hand in your armpit, it will come forth shining white, without blemish. This is another Sign of Allah,
Pickthall And thrust thy hand within thine armpit, it will come forth white without hurt. (That will be) another token.
Sahih And draw in your hand to your side; it will come out white without disease - another sign,
Yusuf Ali "Now draw thy hand close to thy side: It shall come forth white (and shining), without harm (or stain),- as another Sign,-

20.23

surah 20 - verse 23

Arberry So We would show thee some of Our greatest signs.
Maududi for We shall show you some of Our greatest Signs.
Pickthall That We may show thee (some) of Our greater portents,
Sahih That We may show you [some] of Our greater signs.

20.24

surah 20 - verse 24

Arberry Go to Pharaoh; he has waxed insolent.'
Maududi And go to Pharaoh now for he has transgressed all bounds."
Pickthall Go thou unto Pharaoh! Lo! he hath transgressed (the bounds).
Sahih Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed."
Yusuf Ali "Go thou to Pharaoh, for he has indeed transgressed all bounds."

Arberry 'Lord, open my breast,' said Moses,
Maududi Moses said: "Lord! Open my breast for me;

20.36

Arberry Said He, 'Thou art granted, Moses, thy petition.
Maududi He said: "Moses, your petition is granted.
Pickthall He said: Thou art granted thy request, O Moses.
Sahih [Allah] said, "You have been granted your request, O Moses.
Yusuf Ali (Allah) said: "Granted is thy prayer, O Moses!"

20.37

surah 20 - verse 37

Arberry Already another time We favoured thee,
Maududi We have again bestowed Our favour upon you.
Pickthall And indeed, another time, already We have shown thee favour,
Sahih And We had already conferred favor upon you another time,

20.38

Arberry when We revealed what was revealed unto thy mother:
Maududi Recall, when We indicated to your mother through inspiration:

20.39

surah 20 - verse 39

Arberry "Cast him into the ark, and cast him into the river, and let the river throw him up on the shore. An enemy of Mine and his shall take him." And I loaded on thee love from Me, and to be formed in My sight,
Maududi 'Put the baby into a chest and then throw him in the river. The river will throw him up on the shore, and then an enemy of Mine and an enemy of his will take him.' And I spread My love over you in order that you might be reared in My sight.
Pickthall Saying: Throw him into the ark, and throw it into the river, then the river shall throw it on to the bank, and there an enemy to Me and an enemy to him shall take him. And I endued thee with love from Me that thou mightest be trained according to My will,
Sahih [Saying], 'Cast him into the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will throw it onto the bank; there will take him an enemy to Me and an enemy to him.' And I bestowed upon you love from Me that you would be brought up under My eye.
Yusuf Ali "'Throw (the child) into the chest, and throw (the chest) into the river: the river will cast him up on the bank, and he will be taken up by one who is an enemy to Me and an enemy to him': But I cast (the garment of) love over thee from Me: and (this) in order that thou mayest be reared under Mine eye.

20.40

surah 20 - verse 40

Arberry when thy sister went out, saying, "Shall I point you to one to have charge of him?" So We returned thee to thy mother that she might rejoice, and not sorrow. Then thou slewest; a living soul, and We delivered thee out of grief, and We tried thee with many trials. Many years among the people of Midian thou didst sojourn, then camest hither, Moses, according to a decree.
Maududi Recall, when your sister went along, saying: 'Shall I direct you to one who will take charge of him?' Thus We brought you back to your mother so that her heart might be gladdened and she might not grieve. Moses, recall when you slew a person. We delivered you from distress and made you go through several trials. Then you stayed for several years among the people of Midian, and now you have come at the right moment as ordained.
Pickthall When thy sister went and said: Shall I show you one who will nurse him? and we restored thee to thy mother that her eyes might be refreshed and might not sorrow. And thou didst kill a man and We delivered thee from great distress, and tried thee with a heavy trial. And thou didst tarry years among the folk of Midian. Then camest thou (hither) by (My) providence, O Moses,
Sahih [And We favored you] when your sister went and said, 'Shall I direct you to someone who will be responsible for him?' So We restored you to your mother that she might be content and not grieve. And you killed someone, but We saved you from retaliation and tried you with a [severe] trial. And you remained [some] years among the people of Madyan. Then you came [here] at the decreed time, O Moses.
Yusuf Ali "Behold! thy sister goeth forth and saith, 'shall I show you one who will nurse and rear the (child)?' So We brought thee back to thy mother, that her eye might be cooled and she should not grieve. Then thou didst slay a man, but We saved thee from trouble, and We tried thee in various ways. Then didst thou tarry a number of years with the people of Midian. Then didst thou come hither as ordained, O Moses!
