Surah Al Maarij (The Ascending Steps)

70.41

surah 70 - verse 41

Arberry to substitute a better than they; We shall not be outstripped.
Maududi to replace them by others who would be better than they; and We shall certainly not be overpowered.
Pickthall To replace them by (others) better than them. And we are not to be outrun.
Sahih To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.
Yusuf Ali Substitute for them better (men) than they; And We are not to be defeated (in Our Plan).

70.42

surah 70 - verse 42

Arberry Then leave them alone to plunge and play until they encounter that day of theirs which they are promised,
Maududi So leave them to engage in vain talk and to amuse themselves until they come face to face with the Day which they are promised,
Pickthall So let them chat and play until they meet their Day which they are promised,
Sahih So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised -
Yusuf Ali So leave them to plunge in vain talk and play about, until they encounter that Day of theirs which they have been promised!-

surah 70 - verse 43

Arberry the day they shall come forth from the tombs hastily, as if they were hurrying unto a waymark,
Maududi the Day on which they will hastily come forth from their graves, as though they were hurrying on to the altars of their deities.
Pickthall The day when they come forth from the graves in haste, as racing to a goal,
Sahih The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening.
Yusuf Ali The Day whereon they will issue from their sepulchres in sudden haste as if they were rushing to a goal-post (fixed for them),-

Arberry humbled their eyes, overspreading them abasement. That is the day which they were promised.
Maududi Their eyes will be downcast and disgrace will overwhelm them. Such is the Day that they were promised.
Pickthall With eyes aghast, abasement stupefying them: Such is the Day which they are promised.
Sahih Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised.
Yusuf Ali Their eyes lowered in dejection,- ignominy covering them (all over)! such is the Day the which they are promised!
