Arberry | Thou only warnest him who follows the Remembrance and who fears the All-merciful in the Unseen; so give him the good tidings of forgiveness and a generous wage. |
Maududi | You can warn only him who follows the Admonition and fears the Merciful Lord without seeing Him. Give such a one good tidings of forgiveness and a generous reward. |
Pickthall | Thou warnest only him who followeth the Reminder and feareth the Beneficent in secret. To him bear tidings of forgiveness and a rich reward. |
Sahih | You can only warn one who follows the message and fears the Most Merciful unseen. So give him good tidings of forgiveness and noble reward. |
Yusuf Ali | Thou canst but admonish such a one as follows the Message and fears the (Lord) Most Gracious, unseen: give such a one, therefore, good tidings, of Forgiveness and a Reward most generous. |
36.12
surah 36 - verse 12

Arberry | Surely it is We who bring the dead to life and write down what they have forwarded and what they have left behind; everything We have numbered in a clear register. |
Maududi | We shall surely raise the dead to life and We record what they did and the traces of their deeds that they have left behind. We have encompassed that in a Clear Book. |
Pickthall | Lo! We it is Who bring the dead to life. We record that which they send before (them, and their footprints. And all things We have kept in a clear Register. |
Sahih | Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind, and all things We have enumerated in a clear register. |
Yusuf Ali | Verily We shall give life to the dead, and We record that which they send before and that which they leave behind, and of all things have We taken account in a clear Book (of evidence). |
36.13

Arberry | Strike for them a similitude -- the inhabitants of the city, when the Envoys came to it; |
Maududi | Recite to them, as a case in point, the story of the people of the town when the Messengers came to them. |
Pickthall | Coin for them a similitude: The people of the city when those sent (from Allah) came unto them; |
Sahih | And present to them an example: the people of the city, when the messengers came to it - |
Yusuf Ali | Set forth to them, by way of a parable, the (story of) the Companions of the City. Behold!, there came messengers to it. |
36.14

Arberry | when We sent unto them two men, but they cried them lies, so We sent a third as reinforcement. They said, 'We are assuredly Envoys unto you. |
Maududi | We sent to them two Messengers and they rejected both of them as liars. Then We strengthened them with a third (Messenger). |
Pickthall | When We sent unto them twain, and they denied them both, so We reinforced them with a third, and they said: Lo! we have been sent unto you. |
Sahih | When We sent to them two but they denied them, so We strengthened them with a third, and they said, "Indeed, we are messengers to you." |
Yusuf Ali | When We (first) sent to them two messengers, they rejected them: But We strengthened them with a third: they said, "Truly, we have been sent on a mission to you." |
36.15

Arberry | They said, 'You are naught but mortals like us; the All-merciful has not sent down anything. You are speaking only lies.' |
Maududi | They said: “We have been sent to you as Messengers.” The people of the town said: “You are only human beings like ourselves, and the Merciful Lord has revealed nothing. You are simply lying.” |
Pickthall | They said: Ye are but mortals like unto us. The Beneficent hath naught revealed. Ye do but lie! |
Sahih | They said, "You are not but human beings like us, and the Most Merciful has not revealed a thing. You are only telling lies." |
Yusuf Ali | The (people) said: "Ye are only men like ourselves; and (Allah) Most Gracious sends no sort of revelation: ye do nothing but lie." |

Arberry | They said, 'We augur ill of you. If you give not over, we will stone you and there shall visit you from us a painful chastisement.' |
Maududi | The people of the town said: “We believe you are an evil omen for us. If you do not desist, we will stone you or you will receive a grievous chastisement from us.” |
Pickthall | (The people of the city) said: We augur ill of you. If ye desist not, we shall surely stone you, and grievous torture will befall you at our hands. |
Sahih | They said, "Indeed, we consider you a bad omen. If you do not desist, we will surely stone you, and there will surely touch you, from us, a painful punishment." |
Yusuf Ali | The (people) said: "for us, we augur an evil omen from you: if ye desist not, we will certainly stone you. And a grievous punishment indeed will be inflicted on you by us." |
36.19
surah 36 - verse 19

Arberry | They said, 'Your augury is with you; if you are reminded? But you are a prodigal people.' |
Maududi | The Messengers replied: “Your evil omen is with you. (Are you saying this) because you were asked to take heed? The truth is that you are a people who have exceeded all bounds.” |
Pickthall | They said: Your evil augury be with you! Is it because ye are reminded (of the truth)? Nay, but ye are froward folk! |
Sahih | They said, "Your omen is with yourselves. Is it because you were reminded? Rather, you are a transgressing people." |
Yusuf Ali | They said: "Your evil omens are with yourselves: (deem ye this an evil omen). If ye are admonished? Nay, but ye are a people transgressing all bounds!" |

Maududi | In the meantime a man came running from the far end of the town, saying: “My people, follow the Messengers; |
Pickthall | And there came from the uttermost part of the city a man running. He cried: O my people! Follow those who have been sent! |
Sahih | And there came from the farthest end of the city a man, running. He said, "O my people, follow the messengers. |
Yusuf Ali | Then there came running, from the farthest part of the City, a man, saying, "O my people! Obey the messengers: |
