Surah Al Muminoon (The Believers)
23.81
surah 23 - verse 81

Arberry | Nay, but they said the like of what the ancients said. |
Maududi | Nay, but they say the like of what their predecessors of yore had said. |
Pickthall | Nay, but they say the like of that which said the men of old; |
Sahih | Rather, they say like what the former peoples said. |
Yusuf Ali | On the contrary they say things similar to what the ancients said. |

Arberry | They said, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we be indeed raised up? |
Maududi | They say: "Is it that when we are dead and have been reduced to dust and bones, shall we then be raised up again? |
Pickthall | They say: When we are dead and have become (mere) dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again? |
Sahih | They said, "When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? |
Yusuf Ali | They say: "What! when we die and become dust and bones, could we really be raised up again? |

Arberry | We and our fathers have been promised this before; this is naught but the fairy-tales of the ancients.' |
Maududi | We were promised such things and so were our forefathers before us. All these are no more than tales of the past." |
Pickthall | We were already promised this, we and our forefathers. Lo! this is naught but fables of the men of old. |
Sahih | We have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before; this is not but legends of the former peoples." |
Yusuf Ali | "Such things have been promised to us and to our fathers before! they are nothing but tales of the ancients!" |

Sahih | Say, [O Muhammad], "To whom belongs the earth and whoever is in it, if you should know?" |
Yusuf Ali | Say: "To whom belong the earth and all beings therein? (say) if ye know!" |

Arberry | Say: 'In whose hand is the dominion of everything, protecting and Himself unprotected, if you have knowledge?' |
Maududi | Ask them: "Say, if you indeed know, to whom belongs the dominion over all things; (Who is it) that grants asylum, but against Whom no asylum is available?" |
Pickthall | Say: In Whose hand is the dominion over all things and He protecteth, while against Him there is no protection, if ye have knowledge? |
Sahih | Say, "In whose hand is the realm of all things - and He protects while none can protect against Him - if you should know?" |
Yusuf Ali | Say: "Who is it in whose hands is the governance of all things,- who protects (all), but is not protected (of any)? (say) if ye know." |

Maududi | They will surely say: "(The dominion over all things) belongs to Allah." Say: "Whence are you then deluded?" |

Sahih | They will say, "[All belongs] to Allah." Say, "Then how are you deluded?" |
Yusuf Ali | They will say, "(It belongs) to Allah." Say: "Then how are ye deluded?" |

Arberry | Nay, but We brought them the truth and they are truly liars. |
Maududi | We have brought before them the Truth, and there is no doubt that they are lying. |
Pickthall | Nay, but We have brought them the Truth, and lo! they are liars. |
Sahih | Rather, We have brought them the truth, and indeed they are liars. |
Yusuf Ali | We have sent them the Truth: but they indeed practise falsehood! |

surah 23 - verse 91

Arberry | God has not taken to Himself any son, nor is there any god with Him; for then each god would have taken off that he created and some of them would have risen up over others; glory to be God, beyond that they describe, |
Maududi | Never did Allah take unto Himself any son, nor is there any god other than He. (Had there been any other gods) each god would have taken his creatures away with him, and each would have rushed to overpower the other. Glory be to Allah from all that they characterize Him with! |
Pickthall | Allah hath not chosen any son, nor is there any god along with Him; else would each god have assuredly championed that which he created, and some of them would assuredly have overcome others. Glorified be Allah above all that they allege. |
Sahih | Allah has not taken any son, nor has there ever been with Him any deity. [If there had been], then each deity would have taken what it created, and some of them would have sought to overcome others. Exalted is Allah above what they describe [concerning Him]. |
Yusuf Ali | No son did Allah beget, nor is there any god along with Him: (if there were many gods), behold, each god would have taken away what he had created, and some would have lorded it over others! Glory to Allah! (He is free) from the (sort of) things they attribute to Him! |

Maududi | He knows both what is visible and what is not visible. Exalted is Allah above all that they associate with Him. |
Pickthall | Knower of the Invisible and the Visible! and Exalted be He over all that they ascribe as partners (unto Him)! |
Sahih | [He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, so high is He above what they associate [with Him]. |
Yusuf Ali | He knows what is hidden and what is open: too high is He for the partners they attribute to Him! |

Sahih | Say, [O Muhammad], "My Lord, if You should show me that which they are promised, |
Yusuf Ali | Say: "O my Lord! if Thou wilt show me (in my lifetime) that which they are warned against,- |

Maududi | (O Muhammad)! Repel evil in the best manner. We are well aware of all that they say about you. |

Sahih | Repel, by [means of] what is best, [their] evil. We are most knowing of what they describe. |
Yusuf Ali | Repel evil with that which is best: We are well acquainted with the things they say. |

Sahih | And say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils, |

Sahih | [For such is the state of the disbelievers], until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back |
Yusuf Ali | (In Falsehood will they be) Until, when death comes to one of them, he says: "O my Lord! send me back (to life),- |
23.100
surah 23 - verse 100

Arberry | haply I shall do righteousness in that I forsook.' Nay, it is but a word he speaks; and there; behind them, is a barrier until the day that they shall be raised up. |
Maududi | that I have left behind. I am likely to do good." Nay, it is merely a word that he is uttering. There is a barrier behind all of them (who are dead) until the Day when they will be raised up. |
Pickthall | That I may do right in that which I have left behind! But nay! It is but a word that he speaketh; and behind them is a barrier until the day when they are raised. |
Sahih | That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind." No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected. |
Yusuf Ali | "In order that I may work righteousness in the things I neglected." - "By no means! It is but a word he says."- Before them is a Partition till the Day they are raised up. |
