11.21
surah 11 - verse 21

Arberry | Those are they that have lost their souls, and that they forged has gone astray from them; |
Maududi | They caused utter loss to themselves, and all that they had invented failed them. |
Pickthall | Such are they who have lost their souls, and that which they used to invent hath failed them. |
Sahih | Those are the ones who will have lost themselves, and lost from them is what they used to invent. |
Yusuf Ali | They are the ones who have lost their own souls: and the (fancies) they invented have left them in the lurch! |
11.22
surah 11 - verse 22

Arberry | they without doubt will be the greatest losers in the world to come. |
Maududi | Doubtlessly, they shall be the greatest losers in the Hereafter. |
Pickthall | Assuredly in the Hereafter they will be the greatest losers. |
Sahih | Assuredly, it is they in the Hereafter who will be the greatest losers. |
Yusuf Ali | Without a doubt, these are the very ones who will lose most in the Hereafter! |
11.23
surah 11 - verse 23

Arberry | But those who believe, and do righteous deeds, and have humbled themselves unto their Lord -- they shall be the inhabitants of Paradise, therein dwelling forever. |
Maududi | As for those who believed and acted righteously and dedicated themselves totally to their Lord -they are the people of Paradise, and there they shall abide forever. |
Pickthall | Lo! those who believe and do good works and humble themselves before their Lord: such are rightful owners of the Garden; they will abide therein. |
Sahih | Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds and humbled themselves to their Lord - those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide eternally therein. |
Yusuf Ali | But those who believe and work righteousness, and humble themselves before their Lord,- They will be companions of the gardens, to dwell therein for aye! |
11.24
surah 11 - verse 24

Arberry | The likeness of the two parties is as the man blind and deaf, and the man who sees and hears; are they equal in likeness? Will you not remember? |
Maududi | The example of the two parties is that one is blind and deaf, and the other capable of seeing and hearing. Can the two be equals? Will you, then, not heed?' |
Pickthall | The similitude of the two parties is as the blind and the deaf and the seer and the hearer. Are they equal in similitude? Will ye not then be admonished? |
Sahih | The example of the two parties is like the blind and deaf, and the seeing and hearing. Are they equal in comparison? Then, will you not remember? |
Yusuf Ali | These two kinds (of men) may be compared to the blind and deaf, and those who can see and hear well. Are they equal when compared? Will ye not then take heed? |
11.25

Arberry | And We sent Noah to his people: 'I am for you a warner, and a bearer of good tidings: |
Maududi | (Such were the circumstances) when We sent forth Noah to his people. (He said): 'I have been sent to you to warn you plainly |
Pickthall | And We sent Noah unto his folk (and he said): Lo! I am a plain warner unto you. |
Sahih | And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Indeed, I am to you a clear warner |
Yusuf Ali | We sent Noah to his people (with a mission): "I have come to you with a Clear Warning: |
11.26
surah 11 - verse 26

Arberry | Serve you none but God. I fear for you the chastisement of a painful day.' |
Maududi | that you may worship none but Allah or else I fear for you the chastisement of a Grievous Day. |

Sahih | That you not worship except Allah. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a painful day." |
Yusuf Ali | "That ye serve none but Allah: Verily I do fear for you the penalty of a grievous day." |
11.27
surah 11 - verse 27

Arberry | Said the Council of the unbelievers of his people, 'We see thee not other than a mortal like ourselves, and we see no? any following thee but the vilest of us, inconsiderately. We do not see you have over us any superiority; no, rather we think you are liars.' |
Maududi | The notables among Noah's own people, who had refused to follow him, responded: 'We merely consider you a human being like ourselves. Nor do we find among those who follow you except the lowliest of our folk, the men who follow you without any proper reason. We see nothing in you to suggest that you are any better than us. Rather, we believe you to be liars.' |
Pickthall | The chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved, said: We see thee but a mortal like us, and we see not that any follow thee save the most abject among us, without reflection. We behold in you no merit above us - nay, we deem you liars. |
Sahih | So the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, "We do not see you but as a man like ourselves, and we do not see you followed except by those who are the lowest of us [and] at first suggestion. And we do not see in you over us any merit; rather, we think you are liars." |
Yusuf Ali | But the chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "We see (in) thee nothing but a man like ourselves: Nor do we see that any follow thee but the meanest among us, in judgment immature: Nor do we see in you (all) any merit above us: in fact we think ye are liars!" |
11.28
surah 11 - verse 28

Arberry | He said, 'O my people, what think you? If I stand upon a clear sign from my Lord, and He has given me mercy from Him, and it has been obscured for you, shall we compel you to it while you are averse to it? |
Maududi | Noah said: 'My people! If I base myself on a clear evidence from my Lord, and I have also been blessed by His mercy to which you have been blind, how can we force it upon you despite your aversion to it? |
Pickthall | He said: O my people! Bethink you, if I rely on a clear proof from my Lord and there hath come unto me a mercy from His presence, and it hath been made obscure to you, can we compel you to accept it when ye are averse thereto? |
Sahih | He said, "O my people have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord while He has given me mercy from Himself but it has been made unapparent to you, should we force it upon you while you are averse to it? |
Yusuf Ali | He said: "O my people! See ye if (it be that) I have a Clear Sign from my Lord, and that He hath sent Mercy unto me from His own presence, but that the Mercy hath been obscured from your sight? shall we compel you to accept it when ye are averse to it? |
11.29
surah 11 - verse 29

Arberry | O my people, I do not ask of you wealth for this; my wage falls only upon God. I will not drive away those who believe; they shall surely meet their Lord. But I see you are an ignorant people. |
Maududi | My people! I seek no recompense from you. My recompense is only with Allah. Nor will I drive away those who believe. They are destined to meet their Lord. But I find you to be an ignorant people. |
Pickthall | And O my people! I ask of you no wealth therefor. My reward is the concern only of Allah, and I am not going to thrust away those who believe - Lo! they have to meet their Lord! - but I see you a folk that are ignorant. |
Sahih | And O my people, I ask not of you for it any wealth. My reward is not but from Allah. And I am not one to drive away those who have believed. Indeed, they will meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people behaving ignorantly. |
Yusuf Ali | "And O my people! I ask you for no wealth in return: my reward is from none but Allah: But I will not drive away (in contempt) those who believe: for verily they are to meet their Lord, and ye I see are the ignorant ones! |
11.30
surah 11 - verse 30

Arberry | O my people, who would help me against God, if I drive you away? |
Maududi | My people! Were I to drive the men of faith away, who will protect me from (the chastisement of) Allah? Do you not understand even this much? |
Pickthall | And, O my people! who would deliver me from Allah if I thrust them away? Will ye not then reflect? |
Sahih | And O my people, who would protect me from Allah if I drove them away? Then will you not be reminded? |
Yusuf Ali | "And O my people! who would help me against Allah if I drove them away? Will ye not then take heed? |
11.31
surah 11 - verse 31

Arberry | Will you not remember? I do not say to you, "I possess the treasuries of God"; I know not the Unseen; and I do not say, "I am an angel." Nor do I say to those your eyes despise, "God will not give them any good"; God knows best what is in their hearts. 'Surely in that case I should be among the evildoers.' |
Maududi | I do not say to you that I possess Allah's treasures, nor that I have access to the realm beyond the ken of sense-perception, nor do I claim to be an angel. Nor do I say regarding those whom you look upon with disdain that Allah will not bestow any good upon them. Allah knows best what is in their hearts. Were I to say so I would be one of the wrongdoers.' |
Pickthall | I say not unto you: "I have the treasures of Allah" nor "I have knowledge of the Unseen," nor say I: "Lo! I am an angel!" Nor say I unto those whom your eyes scorn that Allah will not give them good - Allah knoweth best what is in their hearts - Lo! then indeed I should be of the wrong-doers. |
Sahih | And I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel, nor do I say of those upon whom your eyes look down that Allah will never grant them any good. Allah is most knowing of what is within their souls. Indeed, I would then be among the wrongdoers." |
Yusuf Ali | "I tell you not that with me are the treasures of Allah, nor do I know what is hidden, nor claim I to be an angel. Nor yet do I say, of those whom your eyes do despise that Allah will not grant them (all) that is good: Allah knoweth best what is in their souls: I should, if I did, indeed be a wrong-doer." |
11.32
surah 11 - verse 32

Arberry | They said, 'Noah, thou hast disputed with us and make much disputation with us. Then bring us that thou promisest us, if thou speakest truly.' |
Maududi | They said: 'O Noah! Surely you have disputed with us and have prolonged your dispute. Now bring upon us the chastisement that you threaten us with; do so, if you are truthful.' |
Pickthall | They said: O Noah! Thou hast disputed with us and multiplied disputation with us; now bring upon us that wherewith thou threatenest us, if thou art of the truthful. |
Sahih | They said, "O Noah, you have disputed us and been frequent in dispute of us. So bring us what you threaten us, if you should be of the truthful." |
Yusuf Ali | They said: "O Noah! thou hast disputed with us, and (much) hast thou prolonged the dispute with us: now bring upon us what thou threatenest us with, if thou speakest the truth!?" |
11.33
surah 11 - verse 33

Arberry | He said, 'God will bring you it if He will; you cannot frustrate Him. |
Maududi | Noah said: 'Only Allah will bring it upon you if He so wills, and you will be utterly unable to frustrate that. |
Pickthall | He said: Only Allah will bring it upon you if He will, and ye can by no means escape. |
Sahih | He said, "Allah will only bring it to you if He wills, and you will not cause [Him] failure. |
Yusuf Ali | He said: "Truly, Allah will bring it on you if He wills,- and then, ye will not be able to frustrate it! |
11.34
surah 11 - verse 34

Arberry | And my sincere counsel will not profit you, if I desire to counsel you sincerely, if God desires to pervert you; He is your Lord, and unto Him you shall be returned.' |
Maududi | If I want to give you good advice that will not profit you if Allah Himself has decided to let you go astray. He is your Lord, and to Him will you be returned.' |
Pickthall | My counsel will not profit you if I were minded to advise you, if Allah's will is to keep you astray. He is your Lord and unto Him ye will be brought back. |
Sahih | And my advice will not benefit you - although I wished to advise you - If Allah should intend to put you in error. He is your Lord, and to Him you will be returned." |
Yusuf Ali | "Of no profit will be my counsel to you, much as I desire to give you (good) counsel, if it be that Allah willeth to leave you astray: He is your Lord! and to Him will ye return!" |
11.35
surah 11 - verse 35

Arberry | (Or do they say, 'He has forged it'? Say: 'If I have forged it, upon me falls my sin; and I am quit of the sins you do.') |
Maududi | (O Muhammad!) Do they say that he himself has forged this message? Tell them: 'If I have forged this, the guilt of it will fall upon me, but I am not responsible for the crimes you are committing. |
Pickthall | Or say they (again): He hath invented it? Say: If I have invented it, upon me be my crimes, but I am innocent of (all) that ye commit. |
Sahih | Or do they say [about Prophet Muhammad], "He invented it"? Say, "If I have invented it, then upon me is [the consequence of] my crime; but I am innocent of what [crimes] you commit." |
Yusuf Ali | Or do they say, "He has forged it"? Say: "If I had forged it, on me were my sin! and I am free of the sins of which ye are guilty! |
11.36
surah 11 - verse 36

Arberry | And it was revealed to Noah, saying, 'None of thy people shall believe but he who has already believed; so be thou not distressed by that they may be doing. |
Maududi | It was revealed to Noah that no more of your people, other than those who already believe, will ever come to believe. So do not grieve over their deeds, |
Pickthall | And it was inspired in Noah, (saying): No-one of thy folk will believe save him who hath believed already. Be not distressed because of what they do. |
Sahih | And it was revealed to Noah that, "No one will believe from your people except those who have already believed, so do not be distressed by what they have been doing. |
Yusuf Ali | It was revealed to Noah: "None of thy people will believe except those who have believed already! So grieve no longer over their (evil) deeds. |
11.37
surah 11 - verse 37

Arberry | Make thou the Ark under Our eyes, and as We reveal; and address Me not concerning those who have done evil; they shall be drowned.' |
Maududi | and build the Ark under Our eyes and Our direction. And do not supplicate Me concerning those who have engaged in wrong-doing. They are doomed to be drowned. |
Pickthall | Build the ship under Our eyes and by Our inspiration, and speak not unto Me on behalf of those who do wrong. Lo! they will be drowned. |
Sahih | And construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration and do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are [to be] drowned." |
Yusuf Ali | "But construct an Ark under Our eyes and Our inspiration, and address Me no (further) on behalf of those who are in sin: for they are about to be overwhelmed (in the Flood)." |
11.38
surah 11 - verse 38

Arberry | So he was making the Ark; and whenever a council of his people passed by him they scoffed at him, He said, 'If you scoff at us, we shall surely scoff at you, as you scoff |
Maududi | As Noah was building the Ark, whenever the leading men of his nation passed by him, they would scoff at him. He said: 'If you scoff at us, we too scoff at you in like manner. |
Pickthall | And he was building the ship, and every time that chieftains of his people passed him, they made mock of him. He said: Though ye make mock of Us, yet We mock at you even as ye mock; |
Sahih | And he constructed the ship, and whenever an assembly of the eminent of his people passed by him, they ridiculed him. He said, "If you ridicule us, then we will ridicule you just as you ridicule. |
Yusuf Ali | Forthwith he (starts) constructing the Ark: Every time that the chiefs of his people passed by him, they threw ridicule on him. He said: "If ye ridicule us now, we (in our turn) can look down on you with ridicule likewise! |
11.39
surah 11 - verse 39

Arberry | and you shall know to whom will come a chastisement degrading him, and upon whom there shall alight a lasting chastisement.' |
Maududi | You will come to know who will be struck by a humiliating chastisement, and who will be subjected to an unceasing torment. |
Pickthall | And ye shall know to whom a punishment that will confound him cometh, and upon whom a lasting doom will fall. |
Sahih | And you are going to know who will get a punishment that will disgrace him [on earth] and upon whom will descend an enduring punishment [in the Hereafter]." |
Yusuf Ali | "But soon will ye know who it is on whom will descend a penalty that will cover them with shame,- on whom will be unloosed a penalty lasting:" |
11.40
surah 11 - verse 40

Arberry | Until, when Our command came, and the Oven boiled, We said, 'Embark in it two of every kind, and thy family -- except for him against whom the word has already been spoken and whosoever believes.' And there believed not with him except a few. |
Maududi | Thus it was until Our command came to pass and the oven boiled over. We said: 'Take into the Ark a pair of every species; and take your own family except those who have already been declared (as unworthy); and also take everyone who believes. But those who, along with him, had believed were indeed just a few. |
Pickthall | (Thus it was) till, when Our commandment came to pass and the oven gushed forth water, We said: Load therein two of every kind, a pair (the male and female), and thy household, save him against whom the word hath gone forth already, and those who believe. And but a few were they who believed with him. |
Sahih | [So it was], until when Our command came and the oven overflowed, We said, "Load upon the ship of each [creature] two mates and your family, except those about whom the word has preceded, and [include] whoever has believed." But none had believed with him, except a few. |
Yusuf Ali | At length, behold! there came Our command, and the fountains of the earth gushed forth! We said: "Embark therein, of each kind two, male and female, and your family - except those against whom the word has already gone forth,- and the Believers." but only a few believed with him. |
