Surah Al Humaza (The One Who Slanders)

104.1

surah 104 - verse 1

Arberry Woe unto every backbiter, slanderer,
Maududi Woe to every fault-finding backbiter;
Pickthall Woe unto every slandering traducer,
Sahih Woe to every scorner and mocker
Yusuf Ali Woe to every (kind of) scandal-monger and-backbiter,

104.2

surah 104 - verse 2

Arberry who has gathered riches and counted them over
Maududi who amasses wealth and counts it over and again.
Pickthall Who hath gathered wealth (of this world) and arranged it.
Sahih Who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it.
Yusuf Ali Who pileth up wealth and layeth it by,

Arberry thinking his riches have made him immortal!
Maududi He thinks that his wealth will immortalise him forever.
Pickthall He thinketh that his wealth will render him immortal.
Sahih He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.
Yusuf Ali Thinking that his wealth would make him last for ever!

104.4

surah 104 - verse 4

Arberry No indeed; he shall be thrust into the Crusher;
Maududi Nay, he shall be thrown into the Crusher.
Pickthall Nay, but verily he will be flung to the Consuming One.
Sahih No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher.
Yusuf Ali By no means! He will be sure to be thrown into That which Breaks to Pieces,

Arberry and what shall teach thee what is the Crusher;
Maududi And what do you know what the Crusher is?
Pickthall Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Consuming One is!
Sahih And what can make you know what is the Crusher?
Yusuf Ali And what will explain to thee That which Breaks to Pieces?

104.6

surah 104 - verse 6

Arberry The Fire of God kindled
Maududi It is the Fire kindled by Allah,
Pickthall (It is) the fire of Allah, kindled,
Sahih It is the fire of Allah, [eternally] fueled,
Yusuf Ali (It is) the Fire of (the Wrath of) Allah kindled (to a blaze),

Arberry roaring over the hearts
Maududi the Fire that shall rise to the hearts (of criminals).
Pickthall Which leapeth up over the hearts (of men).
Sahih Which mounts directed at the hearts.
Yusuf Ali The which doth mount (Right) to the Hearts:

Maududi Verily it will close in upon them,
Pickthall Lo! it is closed in on them
Sahih Indeed, Hellfire will be closed down upon them
Yusuf Ali It shall be made into a vault over them,
