Surah Abasa (He Frowned)

80.21

surah 80 - verse 21

Arberry then makes him to die, and buries him,
Maududi then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave,
Pickthall Then causeth him to die, and burieth him;
Sahih Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.
Yusuf Ali Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave;

80.22

surah 80 - verse 22

Arberry then, when He wills, He raises him.
Maududi and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life.
Pickthall Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life.
Sahih Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.
Yusuf Ali Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again).

80.23

surah 80 - verse 23

Arberry No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding.
Maududi Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him.
Pickthall Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him.
Sahih No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.
Yusuf Ali By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him.

80.24

Arberry Let Man consider his nourishment.
Maududi So let man just consider his food:
Pickthall Let man consider his food:
Sahih Then let mankind look at his food -
Yusuf Ali Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it):

80.25

surah 80 - verse 25

Arberry We poured out the rains abundantly,
Maududi We poured water, pouring it in great abundance,
Pickthall How We pour water in showers
Sahih How We poured down water in torrents,
Yusuf Ali For that We pour forth water in abundance,

Arberry then We split the earth in fissures
Maududi and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder;
Pickthall Then split the earth in clefts
Sahih Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],
Yusuf Ali And We split the earth in fragments,

Arberry and therein made the grains to grow
Maududi then caused the grain to grow out of it,

Sahih And caused to grow within it grain

Pickthall And garden-closes of thick foliage
Sahih And gardens of dense shrubbery
Yusuf Ali And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees,

80.31

Arberry and fruits, and pastures,
Maududi and fruits and pastures –
Pickthall And fruits and grasses:
Sahih And fruit and grass -
Yusuf Ali And fruits and fodder,-

Arberry an enjoyment for you and your flocks.
Maududi all this as a provision for you and your cattle.
Pickthall Provision for you and your cattle.
Sahih [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.
Yusuf Ali For use and convenience to you and your cattle.

80.33

surah 80 - verse 33

Arberry And when the Blast shall sound,
Maududi But when the deafening cry shall be sounded
Pickthall But when the Shout cometh
Sahih But when there comes the Deafening Blast
Yusuf Ali At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,-

Arberry every man that day shall have business to suffice him.
Maududi on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself.
Pickthall Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others).
Sahih For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.
Yusuf Ali Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others.

80.38

surah 80 - verse 38

Arberry Some faces on that day shall shine
Maududi Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness,
Pickthall On that day faces will be bright as dawn,
Sahih [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -
Yusuf Ali Some faces that Day will be beaming,

Arberry some faces on that day shall be dusty
Maududi Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden,
Pickthall And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them,
Sahih And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.
