Surah Al Anaam (The Cattle)

6.1

surah 6 - verse 1

Arberry Praise belongs to God who created the heavens and the earth and appointed the shadows and light; then the unbelievers ascribe equals to their Lord.
Maududi All praise is for Allah alone, Who created the heavens and the earth, and brought into being light and darkness, and yet those who have rejected the call of the Truth ascribe others to be equals to their Lord.
Pickthall Praise be to Allah, Who hath created the heavens and the earth, and hath appointed darkness and light. Yet those who disbelieve ascribe rivals unto their Lord.
Sahih [All] praise is [due] to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light. Then those who disbelieve equate [others] with their Lord.
Yusuf Ali Praise be Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, and made the darkness and the light. Yet those who reject Faith hold (others) as equal, with their Guardian-Lord.

6.2

surah 6 - verse 2

Arberry It is He who created you of clay, then determined a term and a term is stated with Him; yet thereafter you doubt.
Maududi He it is Who has created you out of clay, and then decreed a term (of life), and has also appointed another term, a term determined with Him. Yet you are in doubt!
Pickthall He it is Who hath created you from clay, and hath decreed a term for you. A term is fixed with Him. Yet still ye doubt!
Sahih It is He who created you from clay and then decreed a term and a specified time [known] to Him; then [still] you are in dispute.
Yusuf Ali He it is created you from clay, and then decreed a stated term (for you). And there is in His presence another determined term; yet ye doubt within yourselves!

6.3

surah 6 - verse 3

Arberry He is God in the heavens and the earth; He knows your secrets, and what you publish, and He knows what you are earning.
Maududi And He it is Who is One True God in the heavens and in the earth. He knows your deeds - both secret and open - and knows fully whatever you earn.
Pickthall He is Allah in the heavens and in the earth. He knoweth both your secret and your utterance, and He knoweth what ye earn.
Sahih And He is Allah, [the only deity] in the heavens and the earth. He knows your secret and what you make public, and He knows that which you earn.
Yusuf Ali And He is Allah in the heavens and on earth. He knoweth what ye hide, and what ye reveal, and He knoweth the (recompense) which ye earn (by your deeds).

6.4

surah 6 - verse 4

Arberry Not a sign of their Lord comes to them, but they turn away from it.
Maududi Yet every time a sign of their Lord comes to them, they turn away from it,
Pickthall Never came there unto them a revelation of the revelations of Allah but they did turn away from it.
Sahih And no sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they turn away therefrom.
Yusuf Ali But never did a single one of the signs of their Lord reach them, but they turned away therefrom.

6.5

surah 6 - verse 5

Arberry They cried lies to the truth when it came to them, but there shall come to them news of that they were mocking.
Maududi and thus they gave the lie to the Truth that has now come to them. Soon they will come upon some news concerning what they had mocked at.
Pickthall And they denied the truth when it came unto them. But there will come unto them the tidings of that which they used to deride.
Sahih For they had denied the truth when it came to them, but there is going to reach them the news of what they used to ridicule.
Yusuf Ali And now they reject the truth when it reaches them: but soon shall they learn the reality of what they used to mock at.

6.6

surah 6 - verse 6

Arberry Have they not regarded how We destroyed before them many a generation We established in the earth, as We never established you, and how We loosed heaven upon them in torrents, and made the rivers to flow beneath them? Then We destroyed them because of their sins, and raised up after them another generation;
Maududi Have they not seen how many a people We have destroyed before them? People whom We had made more powerful in the earth than you are and upon them We showered from the heavens abundant rains, and at whose feet We caused the rivers to flow? And then (when they behaved ungratefully) We destroyed them for their sins, and raised other peoples in their place.
Pickthall See they not how many a generation We destroyed before them, whom We had established in the earth more firmly than We have established you, and We shed on them abundant showers from the sky, and made the rivers flow beneath them. Yet we destroyed them for their sins, and created after them another generation.
Sahih Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them which We had established upon the earth as We have not established you? And We sent [rain from] the sky upon them in showers and made rivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and brought forth after them a generation of others.
Yusuf Ali See they not how many of those before them We did destroy?- generations We had established on the earth, in strength such as We have not given to you - for whom We poured out rain from the skies in abundance, and gave (fertile) streams flowing beneath their (feet): yet for their sins We destroyed them, and raised in their wake fresh generations (to succeed them).

6.7

surah 6 - verse 7

Arberry Had We sent down on thee a Book on parchment and so they touched it with their hands, yet the unbelievers would have said, 'This is naught but manifest sorcery.'
Maududi (O Messenger!) Had We sent down to you a book incribed on parchment, and had they even touched it with their own hands, the unbelievers would still have said: 'This is nothing but plain magic.'
Pickthall Had we sent down unto thee (Muhammad) (actual) writing upon parchment, so that they could feel it with their hands, those who disbelieve would have said: This is naught else than mere magic.
Sahih And even if We had sent down to you, [O Muhammad], a written scripture on a page and they touched it with their hands, the disbelievers would say, "This is not but obvious magic."
Yusuf Ali If We had sent unto thee a written (message) on parchment, so that they could touch it with their hands, the Unbelievers would have been sure to say: "This is nothing but obvious magic!"

6.8

surah 6 - verse 8

Arberry 'Why has an angel not been sent down on him?' they say; yet had We sent down an angel, the matter would have been determined, and then no respite would be given them.
Maududi They also say: 'Why has no angel been sent down to this Prophet?' Had We sent down an angel, the matter would surely have long been decided and no respite would have been granted them.
Pickthall They say: Why hath not an angel been sent down unto him? If We sent down an angel, then the matter would be judged; no further time would be allowed them (for reflection).
Sahih And they say, "Why was there not sent down to him an angel?" But if We had sent down an angel, the matter would have been decided; then they would not be reprieved.
Yusuf Ali They say: "Why is not an angel sent down to him?" If we did send down an angel, the matter would be settled at once, and no respite would be granted them.

6.9

surah 6 - verse 9

Arberry And had We made him an angel, yet assuredly We would have made him a man, and confused for them the thing which they themselves are confusing.
Maududi Had We appointed an angel, We would have sent him down in the form of a man - and thus We would have caused them the same doubt which they now entertain.
Pickthall Had we appointed him (Our messenger) an angel, We assuredly had made him (as) a man (that he might speak to men); and (thus) obscured for them (the truth) they (now) obscure.
Sahih And if We had made him an angel, We would have made him [appear as] a man, and We would have covered them with that in which they cover themselves.
Yusuf Ali If We had made it an angel, We should have sent him as a man, and We should certainly have caused them confusion in a matter which they have already covered with confusion.

6.10

surah 6 - verse 10

Arberry Messengers indeed were mocked at before thee; but those that scoffed at them were encompassed by that they mocked at.
Maududi And indeed before your time (O Muhammad!) many a Messenger has been scoffed at; but those who mocked at them were encompassed by the Truth they had scoffed at.
Pickthall Messengers (of Allah) have been derided before thee, but that whereat they scoffed surrounded such of them as did deride.
Sahih And already were messengers ridiculed before you, but those who mocked them were enveloped by that which they used to ridicule.
Yusuf Ali Mocked were (many) messengers before thee; but their scoffers were hemmed in by the thing that they mocked.

6.11

surah 6 - verse 11

Arberry Say: 'Journey in the land, then behold how was the end of them that cried lies.'
Maududi Say: 'Go about journeying the earth, and behold the end of those who gave the lie (to the Truth).'
Pickthall Say (unto the disbelievers): Travel in the land, and see the nature of the consequence for the rejecters!
Sahih Say, "Travel through the land; then observe how was the end of the deniers."
Yusuf Ali Say: "Travel through the earth and see what was the end of those who rejected Truth."

6.12

surah 6 - verse 12

Arberry Say: 'To whom belongs what is in the heavens and in the earth?' Say: 'It is God's. He has prescribed for Himself mercy. He will surely gather you to the Resurrection Day, of which is no doubt. Those who have lost their souls, they do not believe.
Maududi Ask thern: 'To whom belongs all that is in the heavens and on the earth?' Say: 'Everything belongs to Allah.' He has bound Himself to the exercise of mercy (and thus does not chastise you for your disobedience and excesses instantly). Surely He will gather you all together on the Day of Resurrection - the coming of which is beyond doubt; but those who have courted their own ruin are not going to believe.
Pickthall Say: Unto whom belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth? Say: Unto Allah. He hath prescribed for Himself mercy, that He may bring you all together to the Day of Resurrection whereof there is no doubt. Those who ruin their souls will not believe.
Sahih Say, "To whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth?" Say, "To Allah." He has decreed upon Himself mercy. He will surely assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. Those who will lose themselves [that Day] do not believe.
Yusuf Ali Say: "To whom belongeth all that is in the heavens and on earth?" Say: "To Allah. He hath inscribed for Himself (the rule of) Mercy. That He will gather you together for the Day of Judgment, there is no doubt whatever. It is they who have lost their own souls, that will not believe.

6.13

surah 6 - verse 13

Arberry And to Him belongs whatsoever inhabits the night and the day; and He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.'
Maududi And to Him belongs all that dwells in the night and the day. He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Pickthall Unto Him belongeth whatsoever resteth in the night and the day. He is the Hearer, the Knower.
Sahih And to Him belongs that which reposes by night and by day, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Yusuf Ali To him belongeth all that dwelleth (or lurketh) in the night and the day. For he is the one who heareth and knoweth all things."

6.14

surah 6 - verse 14

Arberry Say: 'Shall I take to myself as protector other than God, the Originator of the heavens and of the earth, He. who feeds and is not fed?' Say: 'I have been commanded to be the first of them that surrender: "Be not thou of the idolaters."'
Maududi Say: 'Shall I take for my guardian anyone other than Allah - the Originator of the heavens and earth; He Who feeds and Himself is not fed?' Say: 'Surely I have been commanded to be the first among those who submit (to Allah) and not to be one of those who associate others with Allah in His divinity (even though others may do so).'
Pickthall Say: Shall I choose for a protecting friend other than Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, Who feedeth and is never fed? Say: I am ordered to be the first to surrender (unto Him). And be not thou (O Muhammad) of the idolaters.
Sahih Say, "Is it other than Allah I should take as a protector, Creator of the heavens and the earth, while it is He who feeds and is not fed?" Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, I have been commanded to be the first [among you] who submit [to Allah] and [was commanded], 'Do not ever be of the polytheists.' "
Yusuf Ali Say: "Shall I take for my protector any other than Allah, the Maker of the heavens and the earth? And He it is that feedeth but is not fed." Say: "Nay! but I am commanded to be the first of those who bow to Allah (in Islam), and be not thou of the company of those who join gods with Allah."

6.15

surah 6 - verse 15

Arberry Say: 'Indeed I fear, if I should rebel against thy Lord, the chastisement of a dreadful day.'
Maududi Say: 'Surely do I fear, if I disobey my Lord, the chastisement of an awesome Day.
Pickthall Say: I fear, if I rebel against my Lord, the retribution of an Awful Day.
Sahih Say, "Indeed I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day."
Yusuf Ali Say: "I would, if I disobeyed my Lord, indeed have fear of the penalty of a Mighty Day.

6.16

surah 6 - verse 16

Arberry From whomsoever it is averted on that day, He will have mercy on him; that is the manifest triumph.
Maududi Whosoever has been spared chastisement on that Day, Allah has bestowed His mercy upon him. That is the manifest triumph.
Pickthall He from whom (such retribution) is averted on that day, (Allah) hath in truth had mercy on him. That will be the signal triumph.
Sahih He from whom it is averted that Day - [Allah] has granted him mercy. And that is the clear attainment.
Yusuf Ali "On that day, if the penalty is averted from any, it is due to Allah's mercy; And that would be (Salvation), the obvious fulfilment of all desire.

6.17

surah 6 - verse 17

Arberry And if God visits thee with affliction none can remove it but He; and if He visits thee with good, He is powerful over everything.
Maududi Should Allah touch you with affliction, there is none to remove it but He; and should He touch you with good, He has the power to do everything.
Pickthall If Allah touch thee with affliction, there is none that can relieve therefrom save Him, and if He touch thee with good fortune (there is none that can impair it); for He is Able to do all things.
Sahih And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him. And if He touches you with good - then He is over all things competent.
Yusuf Ali "If Allah touch thee with affliction, none can remove it but He; if He touch thee with happiness, He hath power over all things.

6.18

surah 6 - verse 18

Arberry He is Omnipotent over His servants, and He is the All-wise, the All-aware. Say: 'What thing is greatest in testimony?'
Maududi He has the supreme hold over His servants. He is All-Wise, All-Aware.
Pickthall He is the Omnipotent over His slaves, and He is the Wise, the Knower.
Sahih And He is the subjugator over His servants. And He is the Wise, the Acquainted [with all].
Yusuf Ali "He is the irresistible, (watching) from above over His worshippers; and He is the Wise, acquainted with all things."

6.19

surah 6 - verse 19

Arberry Say: 'God is witness between me and you, and this Koran has been revealed to me that I may warn you thereby, and whomsoever it may reach. Do you indeed testify that there are other gods with God?' Say: 'I do not testify.' Say: 'He is only One God, and I am quit of that you associate.'
Maududi Ask them: 'Whose testimony is the greatest?' Say: 'Allah is the witness between me and you; and this Qur'an was revealed to me that I should warn you thereby and also whomsoever it may reach.' Do you indeed testify that there are other gods with Allah? Say: 'I shall never testify such a thing.' Say: 'He is the One God and I am altogether averse to all that you associate with Him in His divinity.'
Pickthall Say (O Muhammad): What thing is of most weight in testimony? Say: Allah is Witness between me and you. And this Qur'an hath been inspired in me, that I may warn therewith you and whomsoever it may reach. Do ye in sooth bear witness that there are gods beside Allah? Say: I bear no such witness. Say: He is only One Allah. Lo! I am innocent of that which ye associate (with Him).
Sahih Say, "What thing is greatest in testimony?" Say, "Allah is witness between me and you. And this Qur'an was revealed to me that I may warn you thereby and whomever it reaches. Do you [truly] testify that with Allah there are other deities?" Say, "I will not testify [with you]." Say, "Indeed, He is but one God, and indeed, I am free of what you associate [with Him]."
Yusuf Ali Say: "What thing is most weighty in evidence?" Say: "Allah is witness between me and you; This Qur'an hath been revealed to me by inspiration, that I may warn you and all whom it reaches. Can ye possibly bear witness that besides Allah there is another Allah?" Say: "Nay! I cannot bear witness!" Say: "But in truth He is the one Allah, and I truly am innocent of (your blasphemy of) joining others with Him."

6.20

surah 6 - verse 20

Arberry Those to whom We have given the Book recognize it as they recognize their sons. Those who have lost their own souls, they do not believe.
Maududi Those whom We have given the Book will recognize this just as they recognize their own ofspring; but those who have courted their own ruin will not believe.
Pickthall Those unto whom We gave the Scripture recognise (this revelation) as they recognise their sons. Those who ruin their own souls will not believe.
Sahih Those to whom We have given the Scripture recognize it as they recognize their [own] sons. Those who will lose themselves [in the Hereafter] do not believe.
Yusuf Ali Those to whom We have given the Book know this as they know their own sons. Those who have lost their own souls refuse therefore to believe.
