Surah Maryam (Mary)

19.21

surah 19 - verse 21

Arberry He said, 'Even so thy Lord has said: "Easy is that for Me; and that We may appoint him a sign unto men and a mercy from Us; it is a thing decreed."'
Maududi The angel said: "Thus shall it be. Your Lord says: 'It is easy for Me; and We shall do so in order to make him a Sign for mankind and a mercy from Us. This has been decreed.' "
Pickthall He said: So (it will be). Thy Lord saith: It is easy for Me. And (it will be) that We may make of him a revelation for mankind and a mercy from Us, and it is a thing ordained.
Sahih He said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.' "
Yusuf Ali He said: "So (it will be): Thy Lord saith, 'that is easy for Me: and (We wish) to appoint him as a Sign unto men and a Mercy from Us': It is a matter (so) decreed."

19.22

surah 19 - verse 22

Arberry So she conceived him, and withdrew with him to a distant place.
Maududi Then she conceived him and withdrew with him to a far-off place.
Pickthall And she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a far place.
Sahih So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place.
Yusuf Ali So she conceived him, and she retired with him to a remote place.

19.23

surah 19 - verse 23

Arberry And the birthpangs surprised her by the trunk of the palm-tree. She said, 'Would I had died ere this, and become a thing forgotten!'
Maududi Then the birth pangs drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree and she said: "Oh, would that I had died before this and had been all forgotten."
Pickthall And the pangs of childbirth drove her unto the trunk of the palm-tree. She said: Oh, would that I had died ere this and had become a thing of naught, forgotten!
Sahih And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten."
Yusuf Ali And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree: She cried (in her anguish): "Ah! would that I had died before this! would that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight!"

19.24

surah 19 - verse 24

Arberry But the one that was below her called to her, 'Nay, do not sorrow; see, thy Lord has set below thee a rivulet.
Maududi Thereupon the angel below her cried out: "Grieve not, for your Lord has caused a stream of water to flow beneath you.
Pickthall Then (one) cried unto her from below her, saying: Grieve not! Thy Lord hath placed a rivulet beneath thee,
Sahih But he called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream.
Yusuf Ali But (a voice) cried to her from beneath the (palm-tree): "Grieve not! for thy Lord hath provided a rivulet beneath thee;

19.25

surah 19 - verse 25

Arberry Shake also to thee the palm-trunk, and there shall come tumbling upon thee dates fresh and ripe.
Maududi Shake the trunk of the palm-tree towards yourself and fresh and ripe dates shall fall upon you.
Pickthall And shake the trunk of the palm-tree toward thee, thou wilt cause ripe dates to fall upon thee.
Sahih And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.
Yusuf Ali "And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree: It will let fall fresh ripe dates upon thee.

19.26

surah 19 - verse 26

Arberry Eat therefore, and drink, and be comforted; and if thou shouldst see any mortal, say, "I have vowed to the All-merciful a fast, and today I will not speak to any man.
Maududi So eat and drink and cool your eyes; and if you see any person say to him: 'Verily I have vowed a fast to the Most Compassionate Lord, and so I shall not speak to anyone today.' "
Pickthall So eat and drink and be consoled. And if thou meetest any mortal, say: Lo! I have vowed a fast unto the Beneficent, and may not speak this day to any mortal.
Sahih So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.' "
Yusuf Ali "So eat and drink and cool (thine) eye. And if thou dost see any man, say, 'I have vowed a fast to (Allah) Most Gracious, and this day will I enter into not talk with any human being'"

19.27

surah 19 - verse 27

Arberry Then she brought the child to her folk carrying him; and they said, 'Mary, thou hast surely committed a monstrous thing!
Maududi Then she came to her people, carrying her baby. They said: "O Mary! You have committed a monstrous thing.
Pickthall Then she brought him to her own folk, carrying him. They said: O Mary! Thou hast come with an amazing thing.
Sahih Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented.
Yusuf Ali At length she brought the (babe) to her people, carrying him (in her arms). They said: "O Mary! truly an amazing thing hast thou brought!

19.28

surah 19 - verse 28

Arberry Sister of Aaron, thy father was not a wicked man, nor was thy mother a woman unchaste.'
Maududi O sister of Aaron! Your father was not an evil man, nor was your mother an unchaste woman."
Pickthall O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a wicked man nor was thy mother a harlot.
Sahih O sister of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste."
Yusuf Ali "O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a man of evil, nor thy mother a woman unchaste!"

19.29

surah 19 - verse 29

Arberry Mary pointed to the child then; but they said, 'How shall we speak to one who is still in the cradle, a little child?'
Maududi Thereupon Mary pointed to the child. They exclaimed: "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle, a mere child?"
Pickthall Then she pointed to him. They said: How can we talk to one who is in the cradle, a young boy?
Sahih So she pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?"
Yusuf Ali But she pointed to the babe. They said: "How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?"

19.30

surah 19 - verse 30

Arberry He said, 'Lo, I am God's servant; God has given me the Book, and made me a Prophet.
Maududi The child cried out: "Verily I am Allah's servant. He has granted me the Book and has made me a Prophet
Pickthall He spake: Lo! I am the slave of Allah. He hath given me the Scripture and hath appointed me a Prophet,
Sahih [Jesus] said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.
Yusuf Ali He said: "I am indeed a servant of Allah: He hath given me revelation and made me a prophet;

19.31

surah 19 - verse 31

Arberry Blessed He has made me, wherever I may be; and He has enjoined me to pray, and to give the alms, so long as I live,
Maududi and has blessed me wherever I might be and has enjoined upon me Prayer and Zakah (purifying alms) as long as I live;
Pickthall And hath made me blessed wheresoever I may be, and hath enjoined upon me prayer and almsgiving so long as I remain alive,
Sahih And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive
Yusuf Ali "And He hath made me blessed wheresoever I be, and hath enjoined on me Prayer and Charity as long as I live;

19.32

surah 19 - verse 32

Arberry and likewise to cherish my mother; He has not made me arrogant, unprosperous.
Maududi and has made me dutiful to my mother. He has not made me oppressive, nor bereft of God's blessings.
Pickthall And (hath made me) dutiful toward her who bore me, and hath not made me arrogant, unblest.
Sahih And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant.
Yusuf Ali "(He) hath made me kind to my mother, and not overbearing or miserable;

19.33

surah 19 - verse 33

Arberry Peace be upon me, the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I am raised up alive!'
Maududi Peace be upon me the day I was born and the day I will die, and the day I will be raised up alive."
Pickthall Peace on me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive!
Sahih And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive."
Yusuf Ali "So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again)"!

19.34

surah 19 - verse 34

Arberry That is Jesus, son of Mary, in word of truth, concerning which they are doubting.
Maududi This is Jesus, the son of Mary; and this is the truth about him concerning which they are in doubt.
Pickthall Such was Jesus, son of Mary: (this is) a statement of the truth concerning which they doubt.
Sahih That is Jesus, the son of Mary - the word of truth about which they are in dispute.
Yusuf Ali Such (was) Jesus the son of Mary: (it is) a statement of truth, about which they (vainly) dispute.

19.35

surah 19 - verse 35

Arberry It is not for God to take a son unto Him. Glory be to Him! When He decrees a thing, He but says to it 'Be,' and it is.
Maududi It does not befit Allah to take for Himself a son. Glory be to Him! When He decrees a thing He only says: "Be" and it is.
Pickthall It befitteth not (the Majesty of) Allah that He should take unto Himself a son. Glory be to Him! When He decreeth a thing, He saith unto it only: Be! and it is.
Sahih It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.
Yusuf Ali It is not befitting to (the majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son. Glory be to Him! when He determines a matter, He only says to it, "Be", and it is.

19.36

surah 19 - verse 36

Arberry Surely God is my Lord, and your Lord; So serve you Him. This is a straight path.
Maududi (Jesus had said): "Indeed Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so serve Him alone. This is the Straight Way."
Pickthall And lo! Allah is my Lord and your Lord. So serve Him. That is the right path.
Sahih [Jesus said], "And indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path."
Yusuf Ali Verily Allah is my Lord and your Lord: Him therefore serve ye: this is a Way that is straight.

19.37

surah 19 - verse 37

Arberry But the parties have fallen into variance among themselves; then woe to those who disbelieve for the scene of a dreadful day.
Maududi But different parties began to dispute with one another. A dreadful woe awaits on that great Day for those that reject the Truth.
Pickthall The sects among them differ: but woe unto the disbelievers from the meeting of an awful Day.
Sahih Then the factions differed [concerning Jesus] from among them, so woe to those who disbelieved - from the scene of a tremendous Day.
Yusuf Ali But the sects differ among themselves: and woe to the unbelievers because of the (coming) Judgment of a Momentous Day!

19.38

surah 19 - verse 38

Arberry How well they will hear and see on the day they come to Us! But the evildoers even today are in error manifest.
Maududi How well shall they hear and how well shall they see on the Day they come to Us! But today the evil-doers are in manifest error.
Pickthall See and hear them on the Day they come unto Us! yet the evil-doers are to-day in error manifest.
Sahih How [clearly] they will hear and see the Day they come to Us, but the wrongdoers today are in clear error.
Yusuf Ali How plainly will they see and hear, the Day that they will appear before Us! but the unjust today are in error manifest!

19.39

surah 19 - verse 39

Arberry Warn thou them of the day of anguish, when the matter shall be determined, and they yet heedless and unbelieving.
Maududi (O Muhammad), warn those who are steeped in heedlessness and are obstinately rejecting the truth that the Day shall come when things will be finally decided and they shall be left with utter remorse.
Pickthall And warn them of the Day of anguish when the case hath been decided. Now they are in a state of carelessness, and they believe not.
Sahih And warn them, [O Muhammad], of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded; and [yet], they are in [a state of] heedlessness, and they do not believe.
Yusuf Ali But warn them of the Day of Distress, when the matter will be determined: for (behold,) they are negligent and they do not believe!

19.40

surah 19 - verse 40

Arberry Surely We shall inherit the earth and all that are upon it, and unto Us they shall be returned.
Maududi Ultimately, We shall inherit the earth and whatever is on it; to Us shall they be returned.
Pickthall Lo! We, only We, inherit the earth and all who are thereon, and unto Us they are returned.
Sahih Indeed, it is We who will inherit the earth and whoever is on it, and to Us they will be returned.
Yusuf Ali It is We Who will inherit the earth, and all beings thereon: to Us will they all be returned.
