Surah Al Kahf (The Cave)
18.61
surah 18 - verse 61

| Maududi | But when they reached the point where the two rivers meet, they forgot their fish, and it took its way into the sea, as if through a tunnel. |

| Sahih | But when they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its course into the sea, slipping away. |
| Yusuf Ali | But when they reached the Junction, they forgot (about) their Fish, which took its course through the sea (straight) as in a tunnel. |

| Arberry | When they had passed over, he said to his page, 'Bring us our breakfast; indeed, we have encountered weariness from this our journey.' |
| Maududi | When they had journeyed further on, Moses said to his servant: "Bring us our repast. We are surely fatigued by today's journey." |
| Pickthall | And when they had gone further, he said unto his servant: Bring us our breakfast. Verily we have found fatigue in this our journey. |
| Sahih | So when they had passed beyond it, [Moses] said to his boy, "Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered in this, our journey, [much] fatigue." |
| Yusuf Ali | When they had passed on (some distance), Moses said to his attendant: "Bring us our early meal; truly we have suffered much fatigue at this (stage of) our journey." |
18.63

| Arberry | He said, 'What thinkest thou? When we took refuge in the rock, then I forgot the fish-and it was Satan himself that made me forget it so that I should not remember it -- and so it took its way into the sea in a manner marvellous.' |
| Maududi | The servant said: "Did you see what happened? When we betook ourselves to the rock to take rest, I forgot the fish - and it is only Satan who caused me to forget to mention it to you - so that it made its way into the sea in a strange manner." |
| Pickthall | He said: Didst thou see, when we took refuge on the rock, and I forgot the fish - and none but Satan caused me to forget to mention it - it took its way into the waters by a marvel. |
| Sahih | He said, "Did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed, I forgot [there] the fish. And none made me forget it except Satan - that I should mention it. And it took its course into the sea amazingly". |
| Yusuf Ali | He replied: "Sawest thou (what happened) when we betook ourselves to the rock? I did indeed forget (about) the Fish: none but Satan made me forget to tell (you) about it: it took its course through the sea in a marvellous way!" |

| Maududi | Moses said: "That is what we were looking for." So the two turned back, retracing their footsteps, |

| Sahih | [Moses] said, "That is what we were seeking." So they returned, following their footprints. |
| Yusuf Ali | Moses said: "That was what we were seeking after:" So they went back on their footsteps, following (the path they had come). |

| Arberry | Then they found one of Our servants unto whom We had given mercy from Us, and We had taught him knowledge proceeding from Us. |
| Maududi | and there they found one of Our servants upon whom We had bestowed Our mercy, and to whom We had imparted a special knowledge from Ourselves. |
| Pickthall | Then found they one of Our slaves, unto whom We had given mercy from Us, and had taught him knowledge from Our presence. |
| Sahih | And they found a servant from among Our servants to whom we had given mercy from us and had taught him from Us a [certain] knowledge. |
| Yusuf Ali | So they found one of Our servants, on whom We had bestowed Mercy from Ourselves and whom We had taught knowledge from Our own Presence. |

| Maududi | Moses said to him: "May l follow you that you may teach me something of the wisdom which you have been taught?" |
| Pickthall | Moses said unto him: May I follow thee, to the end that thou mayst teach me right conduct of that which thou hast been taught? |
| Sahih | Moses said to him, "May I follow you on [the condition] that you teach me from what you have been taught of sound judgement?" |
| Yusuf Ali | Moses said to him: "May I follow thee, on the footing that thou teach me something of the (Higher) Truth which thou hast been taught?" |

| Maududi | He answered: "You will surely not be able to bear with me. |

| Sahih | He said, "Indeed, with me you will never be able to have patience. |
| Yusuf Ali | (The other) said: "Verily thou wilt not be able to have patience with me!" |

| Sahih | And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?" |
| Yusuf Ali | "And how canst thou have patience about things about which thy understanding is not complete?" |

| Maududi | Moses replied: "You shall find me, if Allah wills, patient; and I shall not disobey you in anything." |
| Pickthall | He said: Allah willing, thou shalt find me patient and I shall not in aught gainsay thee. |
| Sahih | [Moses] said, "You will find me, if Allah wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in [any] order." |
| Yusuf Ali | Moses said: "Thou wilt find me, if Allah so will, (truly) patient: nor shall I disobey thee in aught." |

| Arberry | Said he, 'Then if thou followest me, question me not on anything until I myself introduce the mention of it to thee.' |
| Maududi | He said: "Well, if you follow me, do not ask me concerning anything until I myself mention it to you." |
| Pickthall | He said: Well, if thou go with me, ask me not concerning aught till I myself make mention of it unto thee. |
| Sahih | He said, "Then if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I make to you about it mention." |
| Yusuf Ali | The other said: "If then thou wouldst follow me, ask me no questions about anything until I myself speak to thee concerning it." |

| Arberry | So they departed; until, when they embarked upon the ship, he made a hole in it. He said, 'What, hast thou made a hole in it so as to drown its passengers? Thou hast indeed done a grievous thing.' |
| Maududi | Then the two went forth until, when they embarked on the boat, he made a hole in it, whereupon Moses exclaimed: "Have you made a hole in it so as to drown the people in the boat? You have certainly done an awful thing." |
| Pickthall | So they twain set out till, when they were in the ship, he made a hole therein. (Moses) said: Hast thou made a hole therein to drown the folk thereof? Thou verily hast done a dreadful thing. |
| Sahih | So they set out, until when they had embarked on the ship, al-Khidh r tore it open. [Moses] said, "Have you torn it open to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing." |
| Yusuf Ali | So they both proceeded: until, when they were in the boat, he scuttled it. Said Moses: "Hast thou scuttled it in order to drown those in it? Truly a strange thing hast thou done!" |

| Maududi | He replied: "Did I not tell you that you will not be able to patiently bear with me?" |
| Pickthall | He said: Did I not tell thee that thou couldst not bear with me? |
| Sahih | [Al-Khidh r] said, "Did I not say that with me you would never be able to have patience?" |
| Yusuf Ali | He answered: "Did I not tell thee that thou canst have no patience with me?" |

| Maududi | Moses said: "Do not take me to task at my forgetfulness, and do not be hard on me." |

| Sahih | [Moses] said, "Do not blame me for what I forgot and do not cover me in my matter with difficulty." |
| Yusuf Ali | Moses said: "Rebuke me not for forgetting, nor grieve me by raising difficulties in my case." |
18.74
surah 18 - verse 74

| Arberry | So they departed; until, when they met a lad, he slew him. He said, 'What, hast thou slain a soul innocent, and that not to retaliate for a soul slain? Thou hast indeed done a horrible thing.' |
| Maududi | Then the two went forth until they met a lad whom he slew, whereupon Moses exclaimed: "What! Have you slain an innocent person without his having slain anyone? Surely you have done a horrible thing." |
| Pickthall | So they twain journeyed on till, when they met a lad, he slew him. (Moses) said: What! Hast thou slain an innocent soul who hath slain no man? Verily thou hast done a horrid thing. |
| Sahih | So they set out, until when they met a boy, al-Khidh r killed him. [Moses] said, "Have you killed a pure soul for other than [having killed] a soul? You have certainly done a deplorable thing." |
| Yusuf Ali | Then they proceeded: until, when they met a young man, he slew him. Moses said: "Hast thou slain an innocent person who had slain none? Truly a foul (unheard of) thing hast thou done!" |

| Maududi | Moses said: "Keep me no more in your company if I question you concerning anything after this. You will then be fully justified." |
| Pickthall | (Moses) said: If I ask thee after this concerning aught, keep not company with me. Thou hast received an excuse from me. |
| Sahih | [Moses] said, "If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse." |
| Yusuf Ali | (Moses) said: "If ever I ask thee about anything after this, keep me not in thy company: then wouldst thou have received (full) excuse from my side." |

| Arberry | So they departed; until, when they reached the people of a city, they asked the people for food, but they refused to receive them hospitably. There they found a wall about to tumble down, and so he set it up. He said, 'If thou hadst wished, thou couldst have taken a wage for that.' |
| Maududi | Then the two went forth until when they came to a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to play host to them. They found in that town a wall that was on the verge of tumbling down, and he buttressed it, whereupon Moses said: "If you had wished, you could have received payment for it." |
| Pickthall | So they twain journeyed on till, when they came unto the folk of a certain township, they asked its folk for food, but they refused to make them guests. And they found therein a wall upon the point of falling into ruin, and he repaired it. (Moses) said: If thou hadst wished, thou couldst have taken payment for it. |
| Sahih | So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found therein a wall about to collapse, so al-Khidh r restored it. [Moses] said, "If you wished, you could have taken for it a payment." |
| Yusuf Ali | Then they proceeded: until, when they came to the inhabitants of a town, they asked them for food, but they refused them hospitality. They found there a wall on the point of falling down, but he set it up straight. (Moses) said: "If thou hadst wished, surely thou couldst have exacted some recompense for it!" |
18.78
surah 18 - verse 78

| Arberry | Said he, 'This is the parting between me and thee. Now I will tell thee the interpretation of that thou couldst not bear patiently. |
| Maududi | He said: "This brings me and you to a parting of ways. Now I shall explain to you the true meaning of things about which you could not remain patient. |
| Pickthall | He said: This is the parting between thee and me! I will announce unto thee the interpretation of that thou couldst not bear with patience. |
| Sahih | [Al-Khidh r] said, "This is parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience. |
| Yusuf Ali | He answered: "This is the parting between me and thee: now will I tell thee the interpretation of (those things) over which thou wast unable to hold patience. |

surah 18 - verse 79

| Arberry | As for the ship, it belonged to certain poor men, who toiled upon the sea; and I desired to damage it, for behind them there was a king who was seizing every ship by brutal force. |
| Maududi | As for the boat it belonged to some poor people who worked on the river, and I desired to damage it for beyond them lay the dominion of a king who was wont to seize every boat by force. |
| Pickthall | As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working on the river, and I wished to mar it, for there was a king behind them who is taking every ship by force. |
| Sahih | As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea. So I intended to cause defect in it as there was after them a king who seized every [good] ship by force. |
| Yusuf Ali | "As for the boat, it belonged to certain men in dire want: they plied on the water: I but wished to render it unserviceable, for there was after them a certain king who seized on every boat by force. |
18.80
surah 18 - verse 80

| Maududi | As for the lad, his parents were people of faith, and we feared lest he should plague them with transgression and disbelief, |
| Pickthall | And as for the lad, his parents were believers and we feared lest he should oppress them by rebellion and disbelief. |
| Sahih | And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief. |
| Yusuf Ali | "As for the youth, his parents were people of Faith, and we feared that he would grieve them by obstinate rebellion and ingratitude (to Allah and man). |
