16.41

surah 16 - verse 41

Arberry And those that emigrated in God's cause after they were wronged -- We shall surely lodge them in this world in a goodly lodging, and the wage of the world to come is greater, did they but know;
Maududi As for those who have forsaken their homes for the sake of Allah after enduring persecution, We shall certainly grant them a good abode in this world; and surely the reward of the Hereafter is much greater. If they could but know (what an excellent end awaits)
Pickthall And those who became fugitives for the cause of Allah after they had been oppressed, We verily shall give them goodly lodging in the world, and surely the reward of the Hereafter is greater, if they but knew;
Sahih And those who emigrated for [the cause of] Allah after they had been wronged - We will surely settle them in this world in a good place; but the reward of the Hereafter is greater, if only they could know.
Yusuf Ali To those who leave their homes in the cause of Allah, after suffering oppression,- We will assuredly give a goodly home in this world; but truly the reward of the Hereafter will be greater. If they only realised (this)!

16.42

surah 16 - verse 42

Arberry even such men as are patient, and put their trust in their Lord.
Maududi those who remain steadfast and put their trust in their Lord.
Pickthall Such as are steadfast and put their trust in Allah.
Sahih [They are] those who endured patiently and upon their Lord relied.
Yusuf Ali (They are) those who persevere in patience, and put their trust on their Lord.

16.43

surah 16 - verse 43

Arberry We sent not any before thee, except men to whom We revealed: 'Question the people of the Remembrance, if it should be that you do not know --
Maududi (O Muhammad), whenever We raised any Messengers before you, they were no other than human beings; (except that) to them We sent revelation. So ask those who possess knowledge if you do not know.
Pickthall And We sent not (as Our messengers) before thee other than men whom We inspired - Ask the followers of the Remembrance if ye know not! -
Sahih And We sent not before you except men to whom We revealed [Our message]. So ask the people of the message if you do not know.
Yusuf Ali And before thee also the messengers We sent were but men, to whom We granted inspiration: if ye realise this not, ask of those who possess the Message.

16.44

surah 16 - verse 44

Arberry with the clear signs, and the Psalms; and We have sent down to thee the Remembrance that thou mayest make clear to mankind what was sent down to them; and so haply they will reflect.
Maududi We raised the Messengers earlier with Clear Signs and Divine Books, and We have now sent down this Reminder upon you that you may elucidate to people the teaching that has been sent down for them, and that the people may themselves reflect.
Pickthall With clear proofs and writings; and We have revealed unto thee the Remembrance that thou mayst explain to mankind that which hath been revealed for them, and that haply they may reflect.
Sahih [We sent them] with clear proofs and written ordinances. And We revealed to you the message that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them and that they might give thought.
Yusuf Ali (We sent them) with Clear Signs and Books of dark prophecies; and We have sent down unto thee (also) the Message; that thou mayest explain clearly to men what is sent for them, and that they may give thought.

16.45

surah 16 - verse 45

Arberry Do they feel secure, those who devise evil things, that God will not cause the earth to swallow them, or that the chastisement will not come upon them, from whence they are not aware?
Maududi Do those who have been devising evil plans (against the mission of the Messenger) feel secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them up or that chastisement will not come upon them from a direction that they will not even be able to imagine;
Pickthall Are they who plan ill-deeds then secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them, or that the doom will not come on them whence they know not?
Sahih Then, do those who have planned evil deeds feel secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them or that the punishment will not come upon them from where they do not perceive?
Yusuf Ali Do then those who devise evil (plots) feel secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them up, or that the Wrath will not seize them from directions they little perceive?-

16.46

surah 16 - verse 46

Arberry Or that He will not seize them in their going to and fro, and they will not be able to frustrate Him?
Maududi or that He will not suddenly seize them while they are going about to and fro and they will be unable to frustrate His design,
Pickthall Or that He will not seize them in their going to and fro so that there be no escape for them?
Sahih Or that He would not seize them during their [usual] activity, and they could not cause failure?
Yusuf Ali Or that He may not call them to account in the midst of their goings to and fro, without a chance of their frustrating Him?-

16.47

surah 16 - verse 47

Arberry Or that He will not seize them, little by little destroying them? Surely thy Lord is All-clement, All-compassionate.
Maududi or that He will not seize them when they are apprehensive of the impending calamity? Surely your Lord is Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.
Pickthall Or that He will not seize them with a gradual wasting? Lo! thy Lord is indeed Full of Pity, Merciful.
Sahih Or that He would not seize them gradually [in a state of dread]? But indeed, your Lord is Kind and Merciful.
Yusuf Ali Or that He may not call them to account by a process of slow wastage - for thy Lord is indeed full of kindness and mercy.

16.48

surah 16 - verse 48

Arberry Have they not regarded all things that God has created casting their shadows to the right and to the left, bowing themselves before God in all lowliness?
Maududi Do the people not see how the objects Allah has created cast their shadows right and left, prostrating themselves in utter submission to Allah?
Pickthall Have they not observed all things that Allah hath created, how their shadows incline to the right and to the left, making prostration unto Allah, and they are lowly?
Sahih Have they not considered what things Allah has created? Their shadows incline to the right and to the left, prostrating to Allah, while they are humble.
Yusuf Ali Do they not look at Allah's creation, (even) among (inanimate) things,- How their (very) shadows turn round, from the right and the left, prostrating themselves to Allah, and that in the humblest manner?

16.49

surah 16 - verse 49

Arberry To God bows everything in the heavens, and every creature crawling on the earth, and the angels. They have not waxed proud;
Maududi All living creatures and all angels in the heavens and on the earth are in prostration before Allah; and never do they behave in arrogant defiance.
Pickthall And unto Allah maketh prostration whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth of living creatures, and the angels (also) and they are not proud.
Sahih And to Allah prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of creatures, and the angels [as well], and they are not arrogant.
Yusuf Ali And to Allah doth obeisance all that is in the heavens and on earth, whether moving (living) creatures or the angels: for none are arrogant (before their Lord).

16.50

surah 16 - verse 50

Arberry they fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.
Maududi They hold their Lord, Who is above them, in fear, and do as they are bidden.
Pickthall They fear their Lord above them, and do what they are bidden.
Sahih They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.
Yusuf Ali They all revere their Lord, high above them, and they do all that they are commanded.

16.51

surah 16 - verse 51

Arberry God says: 'Take not to you two gods. He is only One God; so have awe of Me.'
Maududi Allah has commanded: "Do not take two gods; for He is but One God. So fear Me alone."
Pickthall Allah hath said: Choose not two gods. There is only One Allah. So of Me, Me only, be in awe.
Sahih And Allah has said, "Do not take for yourselves two deities. He is but one God, so fear only Me."
Yusuf Ali Allah has said: "Take not (for worship) two gods: for He is just One Allah: then fear Me (and Me alone)."

16.52

surah 16 - verse 52

Arberry To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and earth; His is the religion for ever. Then will you fear other than God?
Maududi His is whatever is in the heavens and the earth, and obedience to Him inevitably pervades the whole universe. Will you, then, hold in awe any other than Allah?
Pickthall Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth, and religion is His for ever. Will ye then fear any other than Allah?
Sahih And to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth, and to Him is [due] worship constantly. Then is it other than Allah that you fear?
Yusuf Ali To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and on earth, and to Him is duty due always: then will ye fear other than Allah?

16.53

surah 16 - verse 53

Arberry Whatsoever blessing you have, it comes from God; then when affliction visits you it is unto Him that you groan.
Maududi Every bounty that you enjoy is from Allah; and whenever any misfortune strikes you, it is to Him that you cry for the removal of your distress.
Pickthall And whatever of comfort ye enjoy, it is from Allah. Then, when misfortune reacheth you, unto Him ye cry for help.
Sahih And whatever you have of favor - it is from Allah. Then when adversity touches you, to Him you cry for help.
Yusuf Ali And ye have no good thing but is from Allah: and moreover, when ye are touched by distress, unto Him ye cry with groans;

16.54

surah 16 - verse 54

Arberry Then, when He removes the affliction from you, lo, a party of you assign associates to their Lord,
Maududi But as soon as He removes the distress from you, some of you associate others with their Lord in giving thanks,
Pickthall And afterward, when He hath rid you of the misfortune, behold! a set of you attribute partners to their Lord,
Sahih Then when He removes the adversity from you, at once a party of you associates others with their Lord
Yusuf Ali Yet, when He removes the distress from you, behold! some of you turn to other gods to join with their Lord-

16.55

surah 16 - verse 55

translator's name verse
Arberry that they may show unthankfulness for that We have given them. So take your joy; certainly you will soon know!
Maududi that they may show ingratitude for the bounties We bestowed upon them. So enjoy yourselves for a while, soon you will come to know (the truth).
Pickthall So as to deny that which We have given them. Then enjoy life (while ye may), for ye will come to know.
Sahih So they will deny what We have given them. Then enjoy yourselves, for you are going to know.
Yusuf Ali (As if) to show their ingratitude for the favours we have bestowed on them! then enjoy (your brief day): but soon will ye know (your folly)!

16.56

surah 16 - verse 56

Arberry And they appoint a share of that We have provided them to what they know not. By God, you shall be questioned as to that you forged.
Maududi They set apart for those, whose reality they do not even know, a portion of the sustenance We have provided them. By Allah, you will surely be called to account for the lies that you have invented!
Pickthall And they assign a portion of that which We have given them unto what they know not. By Allah! but ye will indeed be asked concerning (all) that ye used to invent.
Sahih And they assign to what they do not know a portion of that which We have provided them. By Allah, you will surely be questioned about what you used to invent.
Yusuf Ali And they (even) assign, to things they do not know, a portion out of that which We have bestowed for their sustenance! By Allah, ye shall certainly be called to account for your false inventions.

16.57

surah 16 - verse 57

Arberry And they assign to God daughters; glory be to Him! -- and they have their desire;
Maududi They assign daughters to Allah - glory be to Him - whereas they assign to themselves what they truly desire!
Pickthall And they assign unto Allah daughters - Be He Glorified! - and unto themselves what they desire;
Sahih And they attribute to Allah daughters - exalted is He - and for them is what they desire.
Yusuf Ali And they assign daughters for Allah! - Glory be to Him! - and for themselves (sons,- the issue) they desire!

16.58

surah 16 - verse 58

Arberry and when any of them is given the good tidings of a girl, his face is darkened and he chokes inwardly,
Maududi When any of them is told about the birth of a female his face turns dark, and he is filled with suppressed anger,
Pickthall When if one of them receiveth tidings of the birth of a female, his face remaineth darkened, and he is wroth inwardly.
Sahih And when one of them is informed of [the birth of] a female, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.
Yusuf Ali When news is brought to one of them, of (the birth of) a female (child), his face darkens, and he is filled with inward grief!

16.59

surah 16 - verse 59

Arberry as he hides him from the people because of the evil of the good tidings that have been given unto him, whether he shall preserve it in humiliation, or trample it; into the dust. Ah, evil is that they judge!
Maududi and he hides himself from people because of the bad news, thinking: should he keep the child despite disgrace, or should he bury it in dust? How evil is their estimate of Allah!
Pickthall He hideth himself from the folk because of the evil of that whereof he hath had tidings, (asking himself): Shall he keep it in contempt, or bury it beneath the dust. Verily evil is their judgment.
Sahih He hides himself from the people because of the ill of which he has been informed. Should he keep it in humiliation or bury it in the ground? Unquestionably, evil is what they decide.
Yusuf Ali With shame does he hide himself from his people, because of the bad news he has had! Shall he retain it on (sufferance and) contempt, or bury it in the dust? Ah! what an evil (choice) they decide on?

16.60

surah 16 - verse 60

Arberry Those who believe not in the world to come, theirs is the evil likeness; God's is the loftiest likeness; He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.
Maududi Those who do not believe in the Hereafter deserve to be characterized with evil attributes whereas Allah's are the most excellent attributes. He is the Most Mighty, the Most Wise.
Pickthall For those who believe not in the Hereafter is an evil similitude, and Allah's is the Sublime Similitude. He is the Mighty, the Wise.
Sahih For those who do not believe in the Hereafter is the description of evil; and for Allah is the highest attribute. And He is Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Yusuf Ali To those who believe not in the Hereafter, applies the similitude of evil: to Allah applies the highest similitude: for He is the Exalted in Power, full of Wisdom.
